  • Gender as a determinant of informal capital in the financing of small firms’ start-up : Swedish data
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Switzerland : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 24:2, s. 249-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research explores the differences in informal capital acquisition between female- and male-owned firms in the start-up stage in Sweden. A binary logistic regression model is used to analyse a sample including 836 female- and 1928 male-owned firms in 2008, providing 47,022 observations. The results indicate that the main explanatory variable, gender, is significant in distinguishing between female- and male-owned firms with regards to the use of informal capital in terms of loans from family members. Thus, female-owned firms tend to rely more on loans from family members than male-owned firms. The findings also indicate that one control variable, namely owners previous experience of starting up a company, negatively influences the use of loans from family members as a financing source in the start-up stage. This study is based on a unique and large sample including many different variables compared with previous research. Knowledge on the differences between Swedish female- and male-owned firms in using informal capital in the start-up stage is limited and ambiguous. The presented results contribute to research into small firm financing by adding insight into the relationships between informal capital acquisition, gender, and other relevant variables.

  • Indigenous land rights in Canada : The foundation for development
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 2:2, s. 104-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Throughout the middle decades of the 20th Century Indigenous people were the target of efforts to assist in economic development. In large part these externally developed, modernisation based efforts failed. In response, a second wave of Indigenous development has emerged; one in which Indigenous peoples are striving to rebuild their 'nations' and improve their lot through economic development 'on their own terms'. Key to this approach is the pursuit by Indigenous people of the recognition of their rights to their traditional lands and resources. This paper examines the emergence of this second wave of Indigenous development in Canada.

  • Female top management in family firms and non-family firms : Evidence from total population data
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 35:3, s. 303-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We exploit information on ownership, management and kinship to study the representation of women in top management teams in Swedish family and non-family firms among domiciled limited liability firms over the years 2004 to 2010. The share of female top managers is analysed across listed and non-listed firms as well as across industries. We then estimate the likelihood that a woman is elected into the top management team in family and non-family firms using a probit regression model where we control for firm- A nd individual-level characteristics, including the gender distribution of the firm and kinship relations to existing board members and firm owners. We find that non-listed family firms are more likely to appoint female top managers, whereas we find no differences among listed firms. Moreover, we find that the gender composition and kinship structures of firms influence the appointment of female top managers.

  • Linking periphery with centre: the liability and usefulness of returnee entrepreneurial firm in home country context
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Returnee entrepreneurship has received increasing attention becauseof its characteristics of innovation, international orientation and performanceadvantage, but understanding of how returnee entrepreneurial firms achievedesirable entrepreneurial goals in home country context is limited. Drawing onliterature on the centre-peripheral dichotomy in international scientificcommunity, this paper attempts to investigate context constraints that influencereturnee entrepreneurial firms’ innovation and entrepreneurship performance inthe home country and to explain how firms deal with these constraints. Basedon a longitudinal case study that investigates a successful returneeentrepreneurial firm from China, research findings show that the returneeentrepreneurial firm is able to overcome its peripheral research condition bydeveloping international network connections with researchers at the centre ofthe international scientific community. However, the firm may not be able toproperly respond to the regulatory regime constraints without having a goodunderstanding of the home country and making re-adjustments accordingly.Hence, this study presents a discussion of the usefulness and liability ofreturnee entrepreneurial firms that influence their entrepreneurship process andperformance in the home country.

  • The entrepreneurial university's influence on commercialisation of academic research : The illustrative case of Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 12:4, s. 429-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to describe how the development of an entrepreneurial university contributes to the commercialisation of research. This is illustrated with the case of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The findings show the importance of early pioneers creating a favourable culture from the very beginning of the university’s existence. It also shows the influence of a few key individuals for the developed best practice in the innovation support system, which is to commercialise research by match-making researchers with complementing competences like entrepreneurship students as well as using alumni.

  • Network collaboration for local and regional development the case of Swedish women entrepreneurs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 41:4, s. 539-561
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to explore women entrepreneurs participation in networks with focus on local community collaboration. In recent years interest in the importance of women entrepreneurship worldwide has increased, especially from the viewpoint of local and regional development. Previous studies show that local competitors coordinated in networks can gain cross sector knowledge sharing and boost the attractiveness of a region. Using case study methodology with 14 qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews in two phases with business counselors and women entrepreneurs, participatory observations and document studies, this study explores women entrepreneurs in smaller cities and their collaboration in networks with particular reference to a Swedish context. Results state that women entrepreneurs are active and participate in various local community networks and that networks are viewed as valuable assets for business development. Women entrepreneurs strategically choose to join strong networks that have an impact on local community development. Challenges faced by women entrepreneurs are mainly related to the role as entrepreneur and running a business in a smaller city. However, some specific gendered challenges are lack of trust or respect from other business and public actors, especially in contact with authorities. The women entrepreneurs have mixed experiences of local community support hence the main sources for renewal processes and knowledge sharing are co-owners, staff, digital tools, networks partners, families and friends.
