  • ‘It’s freer and easier in a changing room, because the barriers disappear…’ : A case study of masculinity ideals, language and social status amongst Swedish ice hockey players
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 17:1, s. 26-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has identified sports-related risk factors that can cause acts of violence outside the sporting milieu. The purpose of this case study is to examine the ideals, language and social status of male ice hockey players and determine whether and how they affect their views of sexuality, aggressiveness and actions outside the ice hockey milieu. The method and material are based on a qualitative content analysis of interviews with six senior ice hockey players in Sweden. Research on masculinity and violence theoretically inspires the study. The findings show that expectations and norms can create increased status in a team and at the same time can also make it difficult for players to fully follow their own values and inner guides. In other words, players can be themselves, yet sometimes have to toe the line and follow the group (even if they do not always want to). Another finding is the dilemma of silence and the difficulties that players face in setting limits for team-mates who, for example, joke in a diminishing and inappropriate way. The article ends with a discussion about the challenges that these results entail regarding progressive (violence-preventative) work within ice hockey at the individual and structural levels.

  • Swiss youths, migration and integrative sport: A critical constructive reading of popular discourse
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Sport Sociology. - : Routledge. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 10:2, s. 143-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper critically interrogates widespread assumptions pertaining to the integrative function of sporting involvement in Switzerland. It focuses specifically on young people living in a culturally diverse area and how they make use of discursive variations of the integrative sport text. Interview material draws attention to four main sub-texts that frame sport as: a pedagogical tool, a site of interpersonal exchange, a method of catharsis, and as an apolitical activity without relevance to ethnicity. It is argued that these sub-texts: (1) are embedded within broader culturalist discourse and, (2) either support divisive social relations or do little to challenge them. Both instances suggest that changes are necessary to the way sport is ‘produced’ in discourse if it is to positively influence ethnic relations.

  • Ethical considerations in researching sport and social entrepreneurship
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - : Routledge. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 15:3, s. 216-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to discuss ethical dilemmas that occur in doing research on social entrepreneurial sport ventures. Three cases that highlight ethical dilemmas in research on social entrepreneurship and sport are presented and ethically reflected upon. The data comprise interviews with representatives, field notes from observations and analyses of documents concerning the ventures. Three things make research in this area extra problematic: first, ‘social good’ in social entrepreneurship and sport implies a normative perspective. It is permeated by ideology and ethics. Second, what is considered as ‘social good’ may differ between sectors of society as the entrepreneur crosses boundaries. What is valid as a resource and capital in one sector might not be so in another one, and what is legal within one sector may be illegal in another. Third, social entrepreneurs may have their own intentions with regard to participating in research, which may challenge our credibility as researchers. Therefore, we need, as professionals, to take a step back and be both critical of our work and make this criticism visible, which is to some extent what we are doing by writing this article.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919.
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • In this article we explore children’s experiences of a Sport for All Programme (SAP) in school. The purpose of the ‘Sport for All’ policy is to give children an opportunity to try different sports, with a focus on play and motor learning rather than organized competition. In this study, we approach children as active agents in constructing the SAP practice in line with the theoretical standpoint that children are competent social actors with agency. The study is based on repeated focus group interviews with 15 ten-year-old children (9 girls, 6 boys) participating in a SAP in the western part of Sweden. The children perceived the SAP as sessions with less emphasis on performance and without organized competitions; it was described as a ‘low threshold’ activity. However, the result showed that the SAP activity was not free from performance-oriented principles. The Sport for All pedagogy needs to consider and handle the consequences of competition principles, especially if the participating children and leaders have a performance ethos.

  • Sport-based risk management : shaping motivated, responsible and self-governing citizen subjects
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 14:1, s. 60-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sport Programme, initiated by municipal administrators and managed by a social entrepreneur, is a Swedish sport-based intervention promoted as a response to social problems of crime and segregation in a targeted urban area. The article examines the manager and coaches’ presentation of the programme with respect to how pedagogical governing techniques are assumed to promote social change and how desirable citizen subjects are constructed for social inclusion. A variety of statements are analysed from a governmentality perspective. It is concluded that, although problems are assumed to be caused by structural segregation, the intervention targets individual change and risk management. Presumably, subjects are provided with motivational powers that are shaped by role models and applied in ‘choosing the right track’, navigating among risks and averting problems and exclusion. By representing problems as risks, avoidance is formed as an individual opportunity. This technology of individual agency is aimed at shaping motivated, responsible and self-governing citizen subjects, thus representing subjects as being responsible for their own welfare and inclusion. With respect to sport as a means of responding to social problems, the article provides reflections on and empirical accounts of the conditions of welfare provision and social work under advanced liberalism.

  • Developing sports with a children’s rights perspective? : Intentions, methods, and priorities of development projects in local Swedish sports clubs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 14:3, s. 244-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to analyze the planned development of sport practice regarding children’s rights through project applications from Swedish sports clubs within the Lift for Sport programme. The study on which this paper reports uses data from a large-scale research project that evaluated this sport-for-all programme and is based on an analysis of 2563 applications within five different national sports organizations. Theoretically, the evaluation study draws on programme theories and analyses financially funded development applications made by the sports clubs. The proportion of applications concerning aspects of children’s rights was 2.4% within the following categories: children’s safety in sports, young people’s views, ethics of children’s sports, and prevention of exclusion and dropout from sport. Those applications were further examined regarding which intentions, methods, and priorities sports clubs were aiming to develop children’s sport to be in line with a children’s rights perspective. The methods used to reach the goals were sometimes the same regardless of intention, and, despite the good intentions and some creative methods used for development, applicants seemed to be uncertain about and searching for which relevant methods to use. The findings can be used to inform the discussion on the design of development programmes, policies, and practices to change children’s sport in the framework of children’s rights.

  • "In different sports worlds" : Socialisation among children, coaches, and parents in girls' and boys' football teams
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - Bern : Institut für Sportwissenschaft, Universität Bern. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 12:2, s. 187-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking the sporting triangle as its point of departure, this study aims to investigate the process of socialisation among the children, coaches, and parents who are involved with club-organised girls' and boys' football teams. The study was inspired by a sociocultural perspective and by the new sociology of childhood, which views children as actively participating in the construction of childhood. This article draws on data gathered from ethnographic fi eldwork conducted during eight months over a two-year period, which included 60 observations of children's football and interviews with 38 girls and boys (11–12 years old), seven coaches, and eight parents involved with football teams in a Swedish sports club. One overall conclusion about the process of socialisation was that the children, coaches, and parents had different views on what was most valuable in children's football, and these affected what they expected of each other, as well as how they interacted and behaved. It is concluded that children, coaches, and parents operate in what is referred to as different sports worlds based on different predominating behavioural patterns. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the process of socialisations in the sporting triangle and of how children, coaches, and parents contribute to socialisation in sports.
