  • Social media within sustainable product development: an exploratory multiple case study on the perception of social media usability in the new product development process
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning. - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 10:3/4, s. 273-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media can be a useful tool in order to interact with customers and open up innovation efforts. Our case studies of firms aim to outline if, how and why social media is utilised in their product development processes. Our results show that the use of social media within product development is limited among our respondents, mainly due to limited resources in combination with a low amount of customers. The results show that a low number of customers impede the ability to realise the possible gains of using social media to facilitate communication among a large number of users. Additional challenges are perceived to be the difficulty in controlling content, measuring gains and dealing with security issues. There is no consensus among the respondents with regard to social media's perceived future potential within product development; some are quite hesitant, other companies anticipate increased potential in the future

  • Performance Measurement Framework for Product–Service Systems Development : A Balanced Scorecard Approach
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - Switzerland : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 9:2, s. 146-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper proposes a framework for analysing the performances of product-service systems (PSSs) development processes using a balanced scorecard (BSC) as an instrument to guide the implementation and the evaluation of new methods and tools. Emerging from a case study in the aerospace industry, the paper discusses the main challenges in PSS development and proposes a performance measurement framework for PSS development based on multi-criteria indicators. Finally, the benefits of a framework for PSS development performance measurement are discussed.

  • An 'inside-out' perspective on managing information in new product development
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 2:3, s. 248-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A continuous stream of books and papers has suggested that firms need to apprehend information about environmental factors such as customers, competitors and new technologies in order to enable effective New Product Development (NPD). Often, this literature takes an 'outside-in' perspective, and argues that firms need to utilise tools such as industry structure analysis and the OT component of SWOT to increase NPD performance. This paper outlines an alternative 'inside-out' perspective, and suggests that firms should start not by focusing on the environment, but rather on their resources and capability for managing information. The paper develops and explicates a three-component capability of managing information in NPD. The paper concludes with managerial implications by pointing to a variety of techniques and tools that management and other practitioners involved with NPD can use to build and sustain the capability of managing information.

  • Product Development in SMEs : A literature review
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 4:3, s. 299-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product Development (PD) in Small and medium-sized Firms (SMEs) is a long-neglected research area, and little cumulative work has been conducted previously. The purpose of this paper is to provide a first overview of the area of PD in SMEs. In doing so, we draw upon a sample of 149 peer-reviewed research papers selected from an initial sample of 5694 papers. The review provides tentative answers to issues such as the analytical and methodological approaches of the papers, which topics or areas of research have been focused on by previous scholars, and what kinds of topics that are well covered.

  • Decision-making in gates : based on formal basis or gut feeling?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 7:2, s. 140-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturing companies continuously deal with development of innovations. Many of these are cancelled on the way, in gate meetings. This paper investigates why technologies are cancelled, and on which basis managers make decisions. The paper is based on a study from the automotive industry with interviews with different stakeholders in the gates. The most common reasons for stopping projects were time, cost and technology readiness. Gut feeling is found to be an important factor when evaluating projects. This paper concludes that managers need to understand the role of intuition and query for this subjective information in addition to objective measures.

  • Control mechanisms in collaborative R&D projects : the case of supplier and customer relationships in process industry
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 5:1, s. 73-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaborative R&D projects are often associated with high degrees of complexity and uncertainty therefore they are difficult to manage. The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse which motives collaborating companies have to participate in inter-organisational R&D projects, and how these motives affect the selection of control mechanisms. Empirically, the paper draws on two case studies of joint R&D projects. Findings indicate that companies have a variety of motives which subsequently guides the mix of formal and informal control mechanisms. The paper adds to the literature on collaborative R&D projects and gives managerial advice.

  • Interfaces between technology development, product development and production : critical factors and a conceptual model
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 3:4, s. 317-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interfaces between technology development, product development, and production must be managed in order to avoid misfits between technology and product concepts and ensure the fit of the product design and the production process. In this paper, critical challenges related to these interfaces are studied based on in-depth case studies of ten product development projects at five manufacturing firms, two workshops and a questionnaire. Our findings indicate that factors related to synchronisation and transfer management are most critical. A tentative model is formulated as an instrument to reduce risk and uncertainty related to the interfaces.

  • Impact of technological uncertainty in supplier selection for NPD collaborations : Literature review and a case study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning (IJTIP). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 9:4, s. 323-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper combines a literature review and a case study of supplier selection for new product development (NPD) collaboration to illustrate the impact of technological uncertainty and how firms cope with it. In the review, 21 relevant papers were found after an extensive search. The case study is based on an NPD project to select suppliers for a cable for high voltage transmissions, transporting energy from wind farms at sea to stations located on land. The literature review reveals that supplier selection for NPD under technological uncertainty is indeed problematic. It is not clear from the literature review how firms should select suppliers. Some studies point towards the importance of prior collaborations while others suggest that firms should search for new suppliers and broaden their network. There are a number of aspects that our literature review does not tell us, and consequently we provide suggestions for future research.
