  • Teenagers’ multisensory routes for learning in the museum : Pedagogical affordances and constraints for dwelling in the museum
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - London : Bloomsbury Academic. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 8:3, s. 268-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I draw on a study of sensory aspects of teenagers' use of digital media, how these sensory aspects are incorporated in emerging learning strategies, and the implications of this for the same teenagers' engagement in museums. My focus is on how an ethnographic approach that attends to the senses may enable a critical review of prevailing pedagogical ideas in museums. Recent developments in museum education have led to large investments in state-of-the-art technology to produce interactive, multisensory exhibits. However, the question of how teenagers respond to these campaigns remains rather under-researched. This article shows how habitual use of digital media in teenage everyday practice incorporates learning to appropriate other people's experiences and ideas through a configuration of vision, touch, motion, and imagination, thereby enhancing non-representational learning qualities such as affect and sensation. The implications of this sensory approach open up routes to differentiate pedagogical settings in museums that on a superficial level apply the same educational technologies, but since they are based in different sensorial belief systems, different conditions for learning unfold in their use. In developing this analysis I argue that through ethnographic attention to the senses we might advance theories of learning within museum education. © BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC 2013.

  • Sensing through white gloves. On Congolese objects in Swedish Collections
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - Oxford : Berg Publishers. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 04:01, s. 75-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses collectibles acquired by Swedish missionaries and military officers active within the ill-reputed Congo Free State (1885-1908). Objects are approached here not primarily as tokens of Congolese material culture but as traces of a transnational cultural history and as points of entry to a cricial museology. drawing on case studies of collections I discuss the ways in which artifacts have been selected, joined and charged with new functions and meaning on their voyage between hands narratives and genres. In focus are five examples of objects that, analytically, have worked as what Roland Barthes (1980) calls punctum: the detail that distrubs and fascinates by force of seeming ungrammatical in relation to the larger context of which it forms part. By adding material to the Barthian concept I want to stress that such analytical imuplses may be evoked by all senses. During an inventory of Swedish Congolese collections, when the historical state of stored museum items as untouchables could temporarily bwe broken, their multisensory material presences proved able to challenge textual discourses, serve as alternative witnesses and demonstrate hidden significances of ethnographical museums and collections.

  • Learning to listen and look : the shift from the monitorial system of education to teacher-lea lessons
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 14:2, s. 194-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the relationship between the senses, power and educational change. A case study of a significant shift in instruction methods will be used to show how educational change is related to both the senses and to power. The monitorial system of education, as developed by Bell and Lancaster in the early 19th century, was a system that facilitated the instruction of large numbers of pupils by just one teacher. Most of the instruction was conducted by pupils, older and/or more experienced children, whereas the teacher had an overarching responsibility for overlooking the machinery without teaching much himself. In the second half of the 19th century the method was replaced by a new method in public elementary schools. From now on teacher-led lessons came to be the norm for what mass education should look like. This momentous change meant, among other things, that the relationship between pupils and teacher was transformed as the teacher increasingly was supposed to hold lessons, whereas the pupil to a greater extent became associated with listening to and closely observing a lesson.

  • Fingertip Knowledge : Meret Oppenheim on the Sense of Touch
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 9:1, s. 5-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents Meret Oppenheim (1913–1985) as an artist and a writer who, with a special interest in the sense of touch, explored the relationship between the intellect and the senses. Associated with the surrealist movement, she created a language of the senses in close affinity with nature, art, intuition, and feeling. Her ambition to transcend the opposites of nature and culture, ancient and modern, animal and human, male and female, is expressed in her poetry as well as in her famous fur-lined cup, her hirsute objects, fantastic animals, stone women, bone gloves, and dysfunctional shoes, and her statements on sexual symbolism, cannibalism, and mortality are cleverly based on fingertip knowledge.

  • Touching to connect, explore, and explain: how the human brain makes social touch meaningful
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 18:2, s. 92-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human touch has an enormous power to engender and mediate meaning in the human mind, from the emotional to the pragmatic, and from the linguistic to the symbolic. Can a functional-neuroanatomical perspective on social touch contribute to a general understanding of the biological workings of such meaning-making? I argue here that it can, and that the ways the brain accomplishes this are manifold. I identify and explore three main neural subsystems which operate in concert to generate the emotional and semantic complexion of social touch. These subsystems underlie how humans: 1) touch to connect with others; 2) explore the physical and social worlds; and 3) explain the significance of a touch within our own knowledge and experience, especially with regard to the way we interpret the world through language and culture. I therefore propose that what makes social touch meaningful has much to do with the functional and evolutionary roots of these brain subsystems. Although they can be distinguished and analyzed, in the "wild" human brain these subsystems are functionally intertwined, and their processes are integrated to generate a unified subjective experience of social touch. This view also acknowledges the intertwined nature of the embodied individual within society, thus carrying potential implications for theoretical analysis in such terms.

  • Mechanical tasting : sensory science and the flavorization of food production
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - : Routledge. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 12:3, s. 301-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper narrates the history of “texturometers”, devices that imitate the human biting mechanism and are used by food scientists inexperiments on food texture. Two interrelated processes, characteristic of the emergence of industrialized food production in the twentieth century, are examined through this history of mechanical tasting. First, the paper surveys the pervasive project of transforming the phenomenological qualities of flavor and food texture into robust “objective” and “standardized” data. In constructing and using biomimetic texturometers, food sensory scientists attempted to translate texture qualities such as tenderness, crispness, crunch and chewiness into codified properties by producing formal definitions and graphical representations – an example of how the pursuit of objectivity and standardized knowledge coevolved with the rise of mass production and the emergence of sensory sciences. Secondly, the texturometers are related to an overall “flavorization”; that is, a historical process by which the complexes of sensory impressions became increasingly important for the production and consumption of food in late-modern industrialized societies.

  • Robotic technologies, touch and posthuman embodiment in queer dementia care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 18:2, s. 126-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing technologies raise concerns that go beyond the economies of human to human or human-animal relations to open up exploration of our place in a world of both organic and inorganic effects. I explore how practices that characterize the very specific locus of dementia care could be – and are already – queered by the intervention of technological prostheses, and especially zoomorphic robots, that are increasingly supplementing conventional human support. The paper addresses the issue of techno-touch in dementia care – where the use of companion and empathy robots is becoming widespread – to think through the significance of touch as a physical event and as a metaphor for emotional engagement. In either meaning, touching and being touched must be thought in conjunction with vulnerability, not as an exposure to risk but as the threshold to an imaginary of irreducible interconnections in which self and other play no part.

  • Signature scents : perfume and characterization in the contemporary novel
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - Oxford : Berg. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 5:3, s. 301-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Perfume critique is an underdeveloped academic field and this includes considerations of perfume as a theme within other art forms such as literature. In this article, Angela Carter’s Wise Children and Monika Fagerholm’s Wonderful Women by the Sea are read alongside perfume blogs in order to analyze the significance of perfume references in the novels. It is demonstrated that the authors’ choice of perfumes for their characters plays a crucial part in their characterization, especially in relation to the theme of identity change. Using Alfred Gell’s analysis of perfume use as bound up with “the transcendence of the sweet life,” it is argued that female characters use perfume to become someone else, sometimes a past self. Furthermore, the use of perfume as a literary device in these novels is shown serve as the vehicle for a feminist critique of the division between “masculine” “high” and “feminine” “low” culture.

  • Listening to clothing: from sonic fashion archive to sonic fashion library
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; , s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fashion is primarily a visual ontology consisting of definitions, theory and methods that are based on visual language. This research revises fashion by approaching it from a different – sonic – perspective wherein sound is considered as an intrinsic part of the wearer’s experience. This research opens new avenues for design thinking with ears rather than eyes. This article briefly introduces the research methods I have used to collect and reflect clothing and fashion from the perspective of listening rather than seeing, sounding rather than showing, and is a form of rethinking and redefining fashion by starting with the statement that dress is sound. The dressed body is considered to be a temporal form that is expressed within the sound. This article presents a study of collecting different sonic expressions of clothing, accessory and footwear; analyzing and grouping the sonic expressions – developing sonic fashion archive into a sonic fashion library.

  • Ways of Seeing Ireland’s Green : From Ban to the Branding of a nation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Senses & Society. - 1745-8927 .- 1745-8935. ; 8:2, s. 233-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ireland has long been identified as the Green Isle. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, this article explores the color green in Ireland in terms of visualization and marketing in relation to dress and tourist design. The focus on different ways of seeing Ireland's green reveals the color as an identity marker, highly charged politically and culturally. Starting out as a political statement of Irish identity, green became a marker to outsiders signaling Irishness. The ban on “the wearing of the green” during British colonialism reinforced the significance of green in Ireland. Green was the color of the Republican revolutionary organization, and was identified as the national color long before Ireland became an independent nation in 1922. Now green remains an indicator in outsiders' visual construction of Irishness. The extensive wearing of green on St Patrick's Day, the national day, is a continued celebration of national independence fueled by the legacy of the ban, not only in Ireland but among Irish diaspora communities across the globe. The color green is the signature color in the branding of Ireland as a tourist destination.
