  • The effect of bridging networks on entrepreneurial activity: The rational-legal framework and embeddedness in local social capital networks
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 3:2, s. 125-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of social capital and bridgingnetworks on entrepreneurial activity in three different regions in Sweden. Design/methodology/approach: The empirical base of the paper comprises 120 in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in three municipalities in Sweden, statistical data from Statistics Sweden and a large postal survey conducted by theConfederation of Swedish Enterprises. Findings: The bridging networks between localcivil servants and local politicians on the one hand and entrepreneurs on the other are pivotal for the development of an entrepreneurial community. Research limitations/implications: Despite the same rational-legal framework, this paper shows how the cognitive dimension of social capital influences the level of entrepreneurship in three municipalities. The importance of bridging networks is also highlighted. Practical implications: An open channel of communication between politicians and entrepreneurs allows the former to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the latter. By widening the network, more actors are involved in local and regional development, thereby raising the level of competence and resources. Originality/value: Using three different sets of data, this paper offers a deeper understanding into the complex nature of bridging networks between politics and business.

  • Constructions of Entrepreneurship: A Discourse Analysis of Academic Publications
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 1:1, s. 77-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research paper is to investigate opposing versions of entrepreneurship and to introduce a metaphor to stimulate a dialogue about the diversity and complexity of enterprising communities.Design/methodology/approachA discourse framework is developed in order to describe dominating – and even new and challenging – versions of entrepreneurship. The discourse analysis is presented in three steps: the introductory text to a handbook of entrepreneurship is deconstructed to expose some basic assumptions of entrepreneurship; drawing on several research articles, some dominating versions of entrepreneurship are analysed; drawing on research articles which have recently been published in two special issues in entrepreneurship journals, alternative versions of entrepreneurship are analysed.FindingsThis paper compares three dominating and three alternative versions of entrepreneurship. All the versions are related to the idea of entrepreneurship as a story of creation for our times, where it is implied that entrepreneurship appears to be something inherently good for society and for people. The versions share a common denominator but are also distinguished by different ontological and epistemological assumptions that make a dialogue between the versions problematic.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of this research paper have obvious limitations because of the methodology employed and due to the limited number of texts analysed.Originality/valueThe concept of a discursive web to analyse the world of entrepreneurship is introduced.

  • Walking a tightrope between artistry and entrepreneurship : The stories of the Hotel Woodpecker, Otter Inn and Luna Resort
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 1:3, s. 268-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to challenge a traditional image of the content of entrepreneurship, which is associated with creativity, identity and discovery recognition.Design/methodology/approachA narrative approach is used in telling the story about the artist/entrepreneur Mikael Genberg. The story is based on interviews, newspaper material and observations. Taking this story as the point of departure, an alternative image of entrepreneurship is suggested.FindingsFirst, from a traditional Schumpeterian perspective Genberg could be portrayed as a good example of a hero entrepreneur, an archetype of the creative artist/entrepreneur. Instead Genberg in this paper is described in terms of a creative imitator. Second, the Schumpeterian “hero entrepreneur” is associated with a fixed and strong identity. This picture is challenged and replaced by a demonstration of how double or multiple identities are used in legitimizing work which is argued to be more illustrative to the content of entrepreneurship than finding the true identity of the hero entrepreneur. Third, discovery recognition from a traditional perspective is attributed to the individual, while in this case opportunity creation signifies the process of making discoveries collectively shared.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is exploratory and based on a single case, while the results cannot be taken as generalizations. Instead an alternative understanding of the content of entrepreneurship is illustrated.Originality/valueThe value of this study is the demonstration of an alternative image of the content of entrepreneurship.

  • The role of entrepreneurial orientation in crisis management : evidence from family firms in enterprising communities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 16:5, s. 756-780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose:The purpose of this paper is to explore and understand how family firms manage a crisis by applying a processual and longitudinal perspective. The objective is to find out how crisis management is approached by family firms in Sweden, Scotland and Germany, using entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as an analytical lens. Further, this paper investigates the role of the owning family in creating and solving a crisis in family firms.Design/methodology/approach:This study follows a processual and longitudinal case study approach. Cases are drawn from Germany, Scotland and Sweden. Data collection is based on a combination of interviews with archival data such as annual reports and press clippings.Findings:The results show that all studied firms had high levels of autonomy combined with high risk-taking. It is noteworthy, that these dimensions also help to overcome the crisis. Risk-taking and proactiveness can be useful for addressing the crisis. Under certain circumstances, even innovativeness can help to develop new offers. Autonomy is considered central in family firms and only extraordinary circumstances can be owning families make willing to compromise on it. The EO-dimensions are not all relevant at all times. Rather, family firms will emphasize the dimensions during the consecutive stages differently.Originality/value:This study compares case companies from Germany, Scotland and Sweden and how EO contributes to their crisis management by taking a longitudinal and processual perspective. Its originality lies in the in-depth studies of companies from three countries.

  • Trust building processes in women’s entrepreneurship
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 10:1, s. 70-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Social capital is perceived as an important driver for entrepreneurship. To support development of social capital in women's entrepreneurship, the Swedish government supports development projects with the aim of stimulating business growth. Recent studies show that trust is an essential ingredient when designing such projects. The purpose of this paper is to further develop a theoretical model of trust-building processes by developing and trying out questions regarding trust elements and to study how projects have addressed these various trust-building elements. Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory approach was used, and a survey was conducted. A questionnaire about trust was sent to the project leaders of all 165 development projects in a Swedish government-funded programme with a response rate of 73 per cent. The data were analysed in SPSS. Findings – The results show that contextual and relational aspects should be taken into account in the trust model, and that some of the questions regarding trust elements need to be elaborated more. Originality/value – This paper further develops the construction of a proposed theoretical model of trust-building processes.

  • Value creation through omnichannel practices for multi-actor customers : an evolutionary view
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 16:1, s. 93-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the omnichannel practices to porpose a conceptual overview to offer guidance on how to handle their inherent complexities.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on a literature review of more than 100 academics papers about the multichannel practices and omnichannel practices in the global market.FindingsTo this end, this paper identifies and addresses three limitations of the contemporary omnichannel literature: the failure to articulate the sources of value creation generated by omnichannel practices, the conception of omnichannel as targeting a single customer actor only and the static conception of omnichannel practices. In response to these limitations, this study offers the following: four sources of value creation based on the business model concept, a multi-actor customer conception, where several actors partake in the overall purchase decision and an evolutionary notion of omnichannel practices in terms of their constitution and use as part of the overall evolution of a marketplaceOriginality/valueThe framework presented in this paper provides a map to take new research beyond its current boundaries and an audit tool to help managers identify their firm’s current omnichannel situation, including limitations and opportunities for further development.

  • Workplace spirituality and entrepreneurial behavior among employees in organizations : the role of psychological ownership
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 18:2, s. 415-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to understand the mechanisms through which workplace spirituality affects employees’ entrepreneurial behavior. It proposes and tests a mediation model in which psychological ownership (PO), a feeling of ownership regardless of legal ownership, mediates the relationship between workplace spirituality and employees’ entrepreneurial behavior.Design/methodology/approach: An empirical analysis was conducted with survey data collected from 351 postgraduate students who were also currently working. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the study hypotheses using Mplus software.Findings: Workplace spirituality is associated with employees’ entrepreneurial behavior, and PO fully mediates this relationship. The findings highlight that PO is the missing link that connects workplace spirituality and employees’ entrepreneurial behavior.Practical implications: This study offers organizations a new insight by showing that PO plays a key role in contributing to the entrepreneurial behavior of employees who consider themselves spiritual.Originality/value: The mechanism for the relationship between workplace spirituality and employees’ entrepreneurial behavior is explained.

  • Guest editorial: Migrant entrepreneurship and the roles of family beyond place and space : towards a family resourcefulness across borders perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 17:1, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The call for papers for this special issue aims to examine how migrant entrepreneurs and their families across borders rely on their places of origin and residence to promote migrant entrepreneurship and shape the entrepreneurial processes, contexts, and outcomes for migrant entrepreneurs, their families, and their communities. In doing so, this editorial and the articles of the special issue advance our knowledge of the role of the family in the countries of origin and residence for migrant entrepreneurship and propose a future research agenda on family resourcefulness across borders. We first discuss the research problem and positioning of this editorial, then briefly review the articles published in this special issue. As an outcome of the discussions, we introduce family resourcefulness across borders as a lens to gain future insights on migrant entrepreneurship. Finally, this editorial discussion presents future research directions.
