  • Towards Automatic Ontology Alignment for Enriching Sensor Data Analysis
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937. - 9783642541049 ; 415, s. 179-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work ontology alignment is used to align an ontology comprising high level knowledge to a structure representing the results of low-level sensor data classification. To resolve inherent uncertainties from the data driven classifier, an ontology about application domain is aligned to the classifier output and the result is recommendation system able to suggest a course of action that will resolve the uncertainty. This work is instantiated in a medical application domain where signals from an electronic nose are classified into different bacteria types. In case of misclassifications resulting from the data driven classifier, the alignment to an ontology representing traditional microbiology tests suggests a subset of tests most relevant to use. The result is a hybrid classification system (electronic nose and traditional testing) that automatically exploits domain knowledge in the identification process.

  • An Optimization Model for the Placement of Mobile Stroke Units
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Research in Technologies, Information, Innovation and Sustainability - 3rd International Conference, ARTIIS 2023, Proceedings. - : Springer. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937. - 9783031488573 - 9783031488580 ; 1935 CCIS, s. 297-310
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile Stroke Units (MSUs) are specialized ambulances that can diagnose and treat stroke patients; hence, reducing the time to treatment for stroke patients. Optimal placement of MSUs in a geographic region enables to maximize access to treatment for stroke patients. We contribute a mathematical model to optimally place MSUs in a geographic region. The objective function of the model takes the tradeoff perspective, balancing between the efficiency and equity perspectives for the MSU placement. Solving the optimization problem enables to optimize the placement of MSUs for the chosen tradeoff between the efficiency and equity perspectives. We applied the model to the Blekinge and Kronoberg counties of Sweden to illustrate the applicability of our model. The experimental findings show both the correctness of the suggested model and the benefits of placing MSUs in the considered regions.

  • On mobile learning with Learning Content Management Systems : a contemporary literature review
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Mobile as a Mainstream – Towards Future Challenges in Mobile Learning. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319134154 - 9783319134161 ; 479, s. 131-145
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) are important tools for organizing learning material and communication. Increasingly mobile technologies are used for internet access; particularly important in developing countries where broadband is scarce. Mobile LCMS introduce specific challenges, which are yet not fully addressed. This paper reviews the literature on mobile LCMS for the purpose of identifying current research focus, research gaps, and future research directions regarding how to bridge the gaps and leverage CMS technology to support “mobile learning”. The concept matrix method is used to collect and analyze literature. Five prominent research areas are found; Use, access, design and infrastructure; communication and collaboration; engagement and knowledge development; content and service delivery; and implementation experiences and evaluation. A major gap identified is that research does neither clearly nor thoroughly address the intersection between learning and technology. Adjusting technologies to learning contexts and environments is a key area for future research.

  • Standardization and Quality Assurance in Life-Science Research - Crucially Needed or Unnecessary and Annoying Regulation?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937. ; 940, s. 13-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open Science describes the ongoing transitions in the way research is performed, i.e. researchers collaborate, knowledge is shared, and science is organized. It is driven by digital technologies and by the enormous growth of data, globalization, enlargement of the scientific community and the need to address societal challenges [23]. It has now widely been recognized that making research results more accessible to all societal actors contributes to better and more efficient science, as well as to innovation in the public and private sectors [1, 17]. However, the reuse of research results can only be achieved reliably and efficiently, if these data are valorized in a specific manner. Data are to be generated, formatted and stored according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and according to sophisticated Data Management Plans [23]. Hence, to generate accurate and reproducible data sets, to allow interlaboratory comparisons as well as further and future use of research data it is mandatory to work in line with good laboratory practices and well-defined and validated methodologies. Within this article, members of the Cost Action CHARME [10] will discuss aspects of quality management and standardization in context with Open Access (OA) efforts. We will address the question: Are Standardization and Quality Management measures in life-science research crucially needed or introduce further unwanted means of regulation?

  • Towards a digital business operating system
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0937 .- 1865-0929. ; 868, s. 296-308
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the increasingly important role of software in industry and society overall, the traditional ways of organizing are becoming increasingly outdated. To remain competitive, companies need to adopt a new, digital business operating mechanism. In this paper, we present such a system consisting of four dimensions, i.e. speed, data, ecosystems and empowerment, and three scopes of work, i.e. operations, development and innovation.

  • Assessing Sustainability Impacts ofSystems: SuSAF andtheSDGs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identify key topics where action is required to transform our world towards sustainability. We call for the extensive integration of the SDGs into Software Engineering to support this transformation. This will require the creation of methods and tools for the analysis of software system impacts on the SDGs. To show how this integration might be achieved, we report on a mapping to the SDGs from an existing software sustainability assessment tool, the Sustainability Assessment Framework (SusAF). We find that there is a good mapping between SusAF and the SDGs but that mapping to some specific SDG targets may be dependant on the expertise of the analysts. Mapping of case study systems will be needed for empirical validation.

  • Acceptance of integrated active safety systems in China
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0937 .- 1865-0929. ; 529, s. 533-538
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Yearly almost 60,000 people are killed in traffic accidents in China due to the rapid growth of the number of vehicles and bad driving habits. There is a need to increase safety and cars are being equipped with new active safety technology known as Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS), which can help driver by warning before accidents occur. A simulator study with 16 participants was carried out at a driving simulator, which equipped with an integrated visual interface prototype developed by Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The interface presents information visually to the driver before any critical situation with help from three Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Curve Speed Warning (CSW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Questionnaires and open-ended interviews were held to subjectively measure the participants’ attitude toward the sound warnings and visual interface. Questionnaire results showed that most participants thought the sound warning could facilitate their driving while most users’ attitude towards the visual display warning were comparatively neutral. In order to better understand how ADAS technology can be designed to suite Chinese drivers, their behaviors and preferences. There is more work need to do.

  • The UX Defined UX Designer Is No More
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International 2022 Posters. HCII 2022. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937. - 9783031064173 - 9783031064166 ; 1580, s. 26-32
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • UX is now an acknowledged business process across several industries. Having grown out of Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design, UX is increasingly witnessing scholarly attention outside these historical roots. However, this popularity of UX also seems to have caused a broadening of the UX concept – where several non-UX professional roles and perspectives now shape its meaning. This makes its relationship with interaction design more ambiguous and possibly more diluted, potentially widening the gap between UX as an academic focus and its associated professions. Therefore, we seek to empirically briefly explore how UX is treated in HCI textbooks, as well as current design-related job postings. To that end, a research-practice analysis was conducted based on a literature review and an empirical analysis of job postings for UX design-related professions.Based on this limited study, we suggest that these multidisciplinary perspectives have transformed UX into a kind of placeholder for any ‘interaction’ experience, within the set of academic definitions and included job postings. Moreover, it becomes clear that within the scholarly HCI debate this transformation is accepted and fostered – as it borrows theories from other disciplines that are driving these different perspectives. To that end, it can be argued that UX has developed to be a holistic business perspective – rather than a product specific perspective – where a multitude of non-traditional UX-roles take part in a businesses’ UX efforts. Resulting from this development, we argue that UX nominally has become somewhat decoupled from its roots in the interaction design profession.

  • Shaping Autonomous Vehicles: Towards a Taxonomy of Design Features Instilling a Sense of Safety
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0937 .- 1865-0929. ; 1583 CCIS, s. 172-180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled service robots. Whilst having the potential to enhance our transport systems and journey experiences, there are concerns that the public may be reluctant to adopt AVs, largely driven by doubts about their safety. In this study, we focussed on the role of the exterior vehicle design to instil a sense of safety on behalf of the passenger and bystander, i.e. pedestrians and cyclists. Senior automotive and transport designers were interviewed to identify key design features which revealed a common understanding of key features but also an apparent dichotomy or incompatibility in terms of design directions when considering passengers versus bystanders. Furthermore, designers’ understanding was largely based on their experience of conventional vehicles leading to uncertainty as to the validity in the context of future AVs. The results provide an initial set of design features that will be tested and evaluated with prospective AV users to explore the potential knowledge gap between designers’ intentions and customers’ expectation. This will provide design practitioners tangible, relatable anchors to direct activities towards critical design features whilst enabling design management to introduce more objectivity in their decision making.
