  • In-situ evaluation of dye adsorption on TiO2 using QCM
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured the adsorption characteristics of two organic dyes; triphenylamine-cyanoacrylic acid (TPA-C) and phenoxazine (MP13), on TiO2, directly in a solution based on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Monitoring the adsorbed amount as a function of dye concentration and during rinsing allows determination of the equilibrium constant and distinction between chemisorbed and physisorbed dye. The measured equilibrium constants are 0.8 mM(-1) for TPA-C and 2.4 mM(-1) for MP13. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to compare dried chemisorbed layers of TPA-C prepared in solution with TPA-C layers prepared via vacuum sublimation; the two preparation methods render similar spectra except a small contribution of water residues (OH) on the solution prepared samples. Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping Atomic Force Microscopy (QNM-AFM) shows that physisorbed TPA-C layers are easily removed by scanning the tip across the surface. Although not obvious in height images, adhesion images clearly demonstrate removal of the dye.

  • Rear surface passivation of ultra-thin CIGS solar cells using atomic layer deposited HfOx
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, hafnium oxide layer is investigated as rear surface passivation layer for ultra-thin (550 nm) CIGS solar cells. Point contact openings in the passivation layer are realized by spin-coating potassium fluoride prior to absorber layer growth. Contacts are formed during absorber layer growth and visualized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To assess the passivating qualities, HfOx was applied in a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure, and it demonstrates a low interface trap density in combination with a negative density of charges. Since we used ultra-thin devices that are ideal to probe improvements at the rear, solar cell results indicated improvements in all cell parameters by the addition of 2 nm thick HfOx passivation layer with contact openings.

  • High absorption coefficients of the CuSb(Se,Te)2 and CuBi(S,Se)2 alloys enable high efficient 100 nm thin-film photovoltaics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that the band-gap energies Eg of CuSb(Se,Te)2 and CuBi(S,Se)2 can be optimized for high energy conversion in very thin photovoltaic devices, and that the alloys then exhibit excellent optical properties, especially for tellurium rich CuSb(Se1−xTex)2. This is explained by multi-valley band structure with flat energy dispersions, mainly due to the localized character of the Sb/Bi p-like conduction band states. Still the effective electron mass is reasonable small: mc ≈ 0.25m0 for CuSbTe2. The absorption coefficient α(ω) for CuSb(Se1−xTex)2 is at ħω = Eg + 1 eV as much as 5–7 times larger than α(ω) for traditional thin-film absorber materials. Auger recombination does limit the efficiency if the carrier concentration becomes too high, and this effect needs to be suppressed. However with high absorptivity, the alloys can be utilized for extremely thin inorganic solar cells with the maximum efficiency ηmax ≈ 25% even for film thicknesses d ≈ 50–150 nm, and the efficiency increases to ~30%if the Auger effect is diminished.

  • Multiscale in modelling and validation for solar photovoltaics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges.
