  • Concept design with a living lab approach
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE Communications Society. - 9780769534503 ; , s. 1-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Living Labs is a rather new research area and phenomena that introduces new ways of managing innovation processes. The underlying idea is that people's ideas, experiences, and knowledge, as well as their daily needs of support from products, services, or applications, should be the starting point in innovation. This paper illuminates experiences and accumulated knowledge to the area of concept design in an innovation process within a Living Lab. FormIT, a methodology developed for innovation processes within Living Labs is introduced through an illustration of how it has been utilised in a case. The experiences and the method are related to characteristics of Living Labs, and the paper closes with some concluding remarks in relation to concept design in a Living Lab.

  • Formalizing operations intent and effects for network-centric applications
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 42nd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769534503
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Network-Centric approach enables systems to be interconnected in a dynamic and flexible architecture to support multi-lateral, civilian and military missions. Constantly changing environments require commanders to plan for more flexible missions that allow organizations from various nations and agencies to join or separate from the teams performing the missions, depending on the situation. The uncertainty inherent in an actual mission, and the variety of potential organizations that support the mission after it is underway, makes Command Intent (CI) a critical concept for the mission team. Both humans and computerized decision support services need to have the ability to communicate and interpret a shared CI. This paper presents the Operations Intent and Effects Model (OIEM) - a model that relates CI to Effects, and supports both traditional military planning and Effects Based Operation. In the provided example the suggested Command and Control Language is used to express Operations Intent and Effects. © 2009 IEEE.

  • Forming a Value Network - Analyzing the Negotiations Between Actors in the E-Newspaper Case
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 42nd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769534503 ; , s. 1-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied a two-year project aiming at exploring the potentials of the e-newspaper, i.e. a news service published with e-paper technology. Different actors have interests in this process, e.g. newspaper publishers, device producers, readers and advertisers. These actors are forming value networks by negotiations of interests and positions. The contribution of the paper is twofold: firstly we show how the value network created around e-newspaper is dependent on the convergence of different actors and their interests; secondly our theoretical contribution is to show how Actor Network Theory (ANT) can be used in combination with other theories - in this case genre theory - to analyze emergent value networks. ANT captures the general process of how the value network takes form, while genre theory captures the domain specific context of e-newspapers, and how this structures negotiations between different stakeholders who want to form the e-newspaper genre.

  • The State of IT Governance in Organizations from the Public Sector in a Developing Country
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceeding HICSS '09. 42nd Hawaii International Conference. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9780769534503
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today in many organizations in the public sector, the use of IT has become crucial in sustaining and extending the organizations' strategies and objectives. This pervasive use of technology has caused a critical dependency on IT that calls for specific focus on the IT Governance. This paper discusses the current state of IT Governance practices in five public sector organizations from a developing country, like is Tanzania. The results of this research approach are looking into the IT Governance mechanisms in place in terms of structures, processes and relational mechanisms. Moreover the paper includes a discussion on the problems and consequences inherent to inhibitors of effective IT Governance for a further improvement of the public service delivery in this environment.

  • Collaborative Modeling : A Design Science Approach
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-42). - 9780769534503 ; , s. 1-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used a design science approach to study the collaborative creation of conceptual models. We have designed a collaborative modeling architecture based on business needs and applicable knowledge from theory and empirical findings from a modeling study using conventional modeling. A tool for this architecture was then developed and used as an instrument to confirm the practical relevance of the approach and the validity of the employed theory.

  • Bringing Contextual Dimensions into The improvement of Information System Development Practices
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceeedings of the Forty-Second Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Los Alamitos : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769534503 ; , s. 286-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Significant attention has been paid to the improvement of system development practices. There are theories and methods that are to be used for such improvement purposes. The criticism towards these theories and methods is that many of them have a narrow focus on the system development process, methods, and tools. Too little attention is paid to business orientation, organisational aspects and social factors. In this paper we present a framework that goes beyond this narrow focus in order to serve as a support for directing focus during improvement of system development practices. The development of the framework has been driven by experiences derived from four action research projects focusing on the improvement of system development practices. Generated categories from these experiences have been validated theoretically and internally through a multi-grounded theory development process in order to arrive at a practical theory.

  • Cyber Security Risks Assessment with Bayesian Defense Graphs and Architectural Models
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 42nd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS. - : x. - 9780769534503
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To facilitate rational decision making regarding cyber security investments, decision makers need to be able to assess expected losses before and after potential investments. This paper presents a model based assessment framework for analyzing the cyber security provided by different architectural scenarios. The framework uses the Bayesian statistics based Extended Influence Diagrams to express attack graphs and related countermeasures. In this paper it is demonstrated how this structure can be captured in an abstract model to support analysis based on architectural models. The approach allows calculating the probability that attacks will succeed and the expected loss of these given the instantiated architectural scenario. Moreover, the framework can handle the uncertainties that are accompanied to the analyses. In architectural analysis there are uncertainties acquainted both to the scenario and its properties, as well as to the analysis framework that stipulates how security countermeasures contribute to cyber security.

  • Issues Related to Development of E/E Product Line Architectures in Heavy Vehicles
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 42nd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, IEEE Computer Society, Hawaii, USA. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769534503 ; , s. Article number: 4755804-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of electronics in vehicles is growing quickly, thus systems are becoming increasingly complex which makes the engineering of these software intensive systems more and more difficult. In the automotive industry the use of product line architectures enables a set of vehicles to share architecture to decrease cost and increase quality. In this study we investigate key issues related to real-world decisions regarding electrical and electronic product line architecture for heavy vehicles. To extract key issues a multiple exploratory case study at two heavy vehicle manufacturers was performed. We used semi-formal interviews complemented with a survey to validate the results. The contribution of this study is 14 issues that reflect the situation at the two companies. Many of the identified issues relate to non technical areas such as organization, process, methods and tools, and management. Moreover, possible actions to deal with these issues are discussed.
