- The corrosion of lead-rich pipes in historical organs in different parts of Europe has been investigated. The influence of the environment and the composition and microstructure of the pipe metal was studied. Pipe Corrosion was documented by visual inspection (boroscope). The corrosion attack and the composition and microstructure of the metal were characterized by OM, SEM, XRD, IC and FAAS. It is shown that the degree of corrosion of the pipes is correlated to the concentration of gaseous acetic and formic acid in the organ. The organic acids are emitted by the wood from which the wind system is built. It is also shown that pipe corrosion decreases with increasing tin content in the range 0-4% (wt). - The documentation manual is in itself a documentation of results from the development of a documentation policy and methodology for historical organs at Göteborg Organ Art Center. The manual aims to describe how the organ documentation work of GOArt is performed; specifically, how the documentation reports are systematized and how they are to be interpreted, what is measured, how it is measured, what equipment is used, how the equipment is used, and what the various abbreviations refer to. The aim has been to attain a high level of verifiability, making it possible not only to examine and evaluate the method itself, but also to compare of the results obtained with results of other similar documentations.

Conservation strategies against the corrosion of historical pipe organs

- The corrosion of lead-tin organ pipes is a major threat to historical organs in Europe. A strong corrosion factor is the emission of organic acids, especially acetic acid, from the wooden parts in the organ. The main objective of the present work is the creation of conservation strategies for lead-based organ pipes. To this aim, the protective efficiency of different surface treatments has been evaluated. The accelerated exposure tests in acetic acid atmosphere reveal that none of the selected treatments guaranteed long-term protection. Therefore, the best conservation strategy is the preventive approach of changing the environment. An innovative nanotechnology treatment for the deacidification of wood samples has been studied. This method seems indeed to be promising in order to effectively decrease the high levels of acetic acid vapour in the organ environment.
