  • Jämlik ålderdom? : I samtiden och framtiden
  • 2012. - 1

  • Teaming up or struggling alone from care to occupation – A study of young Swedish care leavers’ occupational trajectories
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Employment is crucial for independence and integration into society, but few studies have focused on care leavers’ own experiences of the transition to working life. This study presents longitudinal data on 14 young Swedish care leavers’ occupational trajectories from out-of-home care (OHC) towards working life. The first interview (T1) was conducted when the respondents were still in OHC but on the verge of leaving care, the second (T2) when the majority had left care, and the third (T3) when they had been out of care for some time. The aim was to study occupational trajectories from out-of-home care among young Swedish care leavers. What are the main features of their trajectories? How do they handle this transition? The thematic analysis generated three different occupational trajectories, recognized as “teamwork,” “lone wolf,” and “tug-of-war.” The theoretical concepts of structure and agency were used to understand these trajectories over time. “Agency enabled by structure” outlined the teamwork trajectory and seemed to imply a successful pathway towards working life. The lone wolf trajectory represented “agency perceived as free from structural constraint” and meant a successful “self-made” trajectory, however, at the expense of vulnerability, and the tug-of-war trajectory represented “agency hindered by structural constraint” as well as individual adversities.

  • Transitional patterns when leaving care – Care leavers’ agency in a longitudinal perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Children and youth services review. - : Elsevier. - 0190-7409 .- 1873-7765. ; 118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on three waves of semi-structured interviews, this longitudinal qualitative study aims to understand the transition from out-of-home care (OHC; foster care, residential care) to independent adulthood, for a group of Swedish care leavers aged 16–20 years (n = 14). What are the main patterns in their transition process? How is agency reflected in these processes? The first interview (T1) was conducted when they were all still in OHC but on the verge of leaving, the second (T2) when the majority had left care and the third (T3) when they had been out for some time. Average time from T1 to T3 was 21 months, ranging from 17 to 28 months. By directed content analysis and an abductive approach, three transitional patterns were identified: From care to societal insiders, From care to societal outsiders and From care to societal in-betweeners. These patterns were connected to different dimensions of agency. Agency with long-term goals was shown to be connected to a stable transition from care, facilitating the emerging identification as independent “insiders” of society. Agency oriented towards the short term instead seemed to be connected to unstable transitions with a growing perception of being left as “outsiders” of society. Shuttling between those agentic positions, trying to apply long-term agency but experiencing the need for instant and pragmatic decisions, implied a halted transition “in-between” OHC and independent adulthood.

  • Attitudes, experiences and expectations on new intimate relationships in later life : results from a Swedish national survey
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging. - : Springer. - 1279-7707 .- 1760-4788. ; 17:Suppl. 1, s. 109-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction : More than a million, or almost half, of the 60+ population (46%) in Sweden today are singles (never married, divorced, widows/widowers), a majority are women and the actual number as well as the proportion of divorcees is increasing. Still, we know very little about the intimate lives of non-married elderly people or about re-partnering in later life. This presentation focuses attitudes to, expectations on, and experiences of new intimate relations in later life.Method : It is based on results from a new representative survey of 3 000 Swedes, 60-90 years old (boosted with regards to non-married people), that was developed from questions generated by a recent qualitative interview study with 28 Swedes who had established a new relationship after the age of 60.Results : We describe attitudes, expectations and experiences in the older population generally, but also in different groups defined on the basis of gender, class, life-course phase, sexual orientation, degree of urbanization and intimacy career. We also focus the importance of intimate relationships for older people’s quality of life, and reason about how structures of informal support may look for older people who enter new intimate relationships. Conclusion : As of november 2012 we are still in an early phase of the survey work, thus conclusions are pending.

  • Blood thicker than water? Emotional closeness between older parents and adult children in stepfamilies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1322-9400 .- 1839-3543. ; 28:2, s. 493-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing prevalence of ageing stepfamilies and stepchildren's potential to act as a source of support for older parents has prompted research about intergenerational cohesion in steprelationships. Our purpose is to investigate emotional closeness in biological and step-relationships in ageing stepfamilies, and the explanations older parents and adult children give to such differences. We study emotional closeness in parent-child relationships among Swedish older parents (aged 66-79) who have raised both biological and stepchildren, and adult children (aged 31-57) who were raised by both biological and stepparents. Qualitative family history interviews (n = 24) including hierarchical maps of long-term family relationships were collected and analyzed. Results show biological relationships to be rated as emotionally closer than step-relationships, by both parents and children. This gap in closeness is explained by the informants in terms of (a) personal characteristics, (b) social circumstances and (c) the importance of blood. Both children and parents use the first two explanations, but there is a clear generational difference concerning the perceived importance of blood. While older parents deemphasize the importance of blood for emotional closeness, adult children emphasize it. The study contributes to ageing stepfamily research by including stepfamily members' own perspectives on emotional closeness.
