  • Cultural borders of Europe : narratives, concepts and practices in the present and the past
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The cultural borders of Europe are today more visible than ever, and with them comes a sense of uncertainty with respect to liberal democratic traditions: whether treated as abstractions or concrete realities, cultural divisions challenge concepts of legitimacy and political representation as well as the legal bases for citizenship. Thus, an understanding of such borders and their consequences is of utmost importance for promoting the evolution of democracy. Cultural Borders of Europe provides a wide-ranging exploration of these lines of demarcation in a variety of regions and historical eras, providing essential insights into the state of European intercultural relations today.

  • Cultural Identities and National Borders
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Contemporary Europe spans a new landscape of cultural identities that eschews national borders and simple mapmaking. Migration and identity politics – as well as a new awareness of linguistic and national identities – are radically challenging the ideal of culturally homogeneous national-states. Meanwhile, the ongoing process of integration is generating a need to reach beyond cultural borders. Thus, understanding the cultural dimensions of constructing and reconstructing borders is of the utmost importance. The fourteen scholars who appear in this book present their studies on this topic. The book features cases from seven countries, as well as chapters concerning general questions about how to define a language and theoretical framework for the concept of national identity. The authors represent many different disciplines, including archaeology, economic history, film studies, geography, history, the history of ideas, linguistics, Romance languages and sociology.

  • An Uncomfortable Responsibility: Ethics and Nuclear Waste
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Legacy: Toward New Paradigms. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1084-8770. ; 17:1, s. 71-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the ethics of nuclear waste management in terms of the concept of responsibility for the harmful effects of modern technology. At present, the principle that every country and new generation should assume responsibility for the nuclear waste they produce is challenged by a globalised industry and the repositories of nuclear waste that have accumulated over the past fifty years and been left for future generations to manage. The basic premise of the article is that modern technology, particularly nuclear power, calls for a new kind of responsibility that extends to future generations as well. This new concept of responsibility and the principles of long-term management of nuclear waste are set out and discussed in detail, with reference to Kant, Jaspers, Jonas, Peter Kemp and others.

  • Atomic war or world peace order? Karl Jaspers, Denis de Rougemont, Bertrand Russell
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Global Intellectual History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2380-1883 .- 2380-1891. ; 7:4, s. 784-800
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The detonations of atomic bombs over two major Japanese cities and the development of nuclear weapons stirred many responses from intellectuals. Immediate responses were those of shock and fear, constituting a distinct feeling of dystopianism in what earlier research has described as a utopian moment. This article assesses how Karl Jaspers, Denis de Rougemont and Bertrand Russell responded to the bomb, from the years 1945–1958, drawing upon the devices of transnational and conceptual history. They regarded the Second World War and the nuclear armament as results of nation state sovereignty and pleaded for international law and delineations of national sovereignty. The responses underwent three different phases, while they continued to share the common threats of communism and Soviet totalitarianism. In looking at Jaspers, De Rougemont and Russell, we are able to see an internationalism that argued from the standpoint of a liberal order which was increasingly fuelled by anti-communism. In several respects, their responses to the atomic bomb represented a major strand of Western European internationalist thinking during the post-war period.
