  • Storage ring at HIE-ISOLDE Technical design report
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 207:1, s. 1-117
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose to install a storage ring at an ISOL-type radioactive beam facility for the first time. Specifically, we intend to setup the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored secondary beams that is unique in the world. The envisaged physics programme is rich and varied, spanning from investigations of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. The TSR might also be employed for removal of isobaric contaminants from stored ion beams and for systematic studies within the neutrino beam programme. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, cooled beams can also be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. The existing TSR, which is presently in operation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is well-suited and can be employed for this purpose. The physics cases as well as technical details of the existing ring facility and of the beam and infrastructure requirements at HIE-ISOLDE are discussed in the present technical design report.

  • Test Results of the First Wax-Impregnated Nb-Ti Canted Cosine Theta Septum Magnet “SuShi”
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity (Print). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1051-8223 .- 1558-2515. ; 34:5, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the framework of the future circular collider study, a new septum magnet concept (“SuShi”) has been developed, and a prototype was built at Wigner RCP, and tested at the FREIA facility of Uppsala University. The concept uses a canted cosine theta (CCT)-like superconducting magnet and a passive superconducting shield to create a zero-field and high-field region within its aperture. SuShi is the first CCT magnet with both of its winding layers simultaneously impregnated with wax. Details of the construction will be presented, with special emphasis on the wax impregnation procedure which deals with the ∼ 15% contraction of wax upon solidification. The empty magnet (no shield in its aperture) was powered without training to 450 A with a peak field of 3.64 T, corresponding to 80% of the short sample limit of the conductor along the load line. No quench or other anomaly was observed during the entire testing period. A clear onset of quench-back was observed above about 200 A.

  • Thermal unfolding of the DNA-binding protein Sso7d from the hyperthermophile Sulfolobus solfataricus
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 264:5, s. 1132-1144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal unfolding of the small hyperthermophilic DNA-binding protein Sso7d was studied by circular dichroism spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The unfolding transition can be described by a reversible two state process. Maximum stability was observed in the region between pH 4.5 and 7.0 where Sso7d unfolds with a melting temperature between 370.8 to 371.9 K and an unfolding enthalpy between 62.9 and 65.4 kcal/mol. The heat capacity differences between the native and the heat denatured states obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (620 cal/(mol K)) and circular dichroism spectroscopy (580 cal/(mol K)) resulted in comparable values. The thermodynamic reason for the high melting temperature of Sso7d is the shallow stability curve with a broad free energy maximum, corresponding to the relatively small heat capacity change which was obtained. The calculated stability curve shows that Sso7d has, despite of its high melting temperature, an only moderate intrinsic stability, which reaches its maximum (approximate to 7 kcal/mol) at 282 K. Sso7d is particularly poorly stabilized (approximate to 1 kcal/mol) at the maximum physiological growth temperature of Sulfolobus solfataricus. Sso7d has furthermore untypically low specific enthalpy (0.99 kcal/(mol residue)) and entropy (2.99 cal/(mol K)) values at convergence temperatures. No significant differences in thermal stability of the partially methylated Sso7d from Sulfolobus solfataricus and the cloned non-methylated form of the protein expressed in Escherichia coli were observed. • Dietary natural products and their potential to influence health and disease including animal model studies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Animal Science Papers and Reports. - : POLSKA AKAD NAUK, INST GENETYKI I HODOWLI ZWIERZAT. - 0860-4037. ; 36:4, s. 345-358
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although biological and pharmacological effects of dietary natural products have been intensively studied, there has been no bibliometric analysis performed on this research field up to now. The current study has aimed to identify and analyze the manuscripts on dietary natural products and their potential to influence health and disease including studies using animal models. Data, including words from titles and abstracts, publication and citation data, have been extracted from Web of Science database and analyzed by the VOSviewer software. Our search has yielded 1,014 manuscripts. The ratio of original articles to reviews was identified to be 1.5:1. Over half of the manuscripts have been published since 2010. The manuscripts have been contributed by 4,301 authors from 1,445 organizations in 76 countries/territories and published in 499 journals. The results from the current study point out that scientific research focusing on the potential of dietary natural products to affect health and disease status (including animal model studies) is expanding, and suggests an increasing significance of this scientific area. With the progressive development and improvement of animal studies, it should be expected that animal models of different human diseases (especially civilization ones) would be an integral part of the research for the evaluation of pharmaceuticals originated from dietary natural products like plants or plant materials. Moreover, natural products can also be fed to animals to improve the quality of animal products, with numerous resulting functional effects.
