  • Herbivore diversity effects on Arctic tundra ecosystems : a systematic review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Evidence. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 2047-2382. ; 13:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Northern ecosystems are strongly influenced by herbivores that differ in their impacts on the ecosystem. Yet the role of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and functioning of tundra ecosystems has been overlooked. With climate and land-use changes causing rapid shifts in Arctic species assemblages, a better understanding of the consequences of herbivore diversity changes for tundra ecosystem functioning is urgently needed. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on the effects of herbivore diversity on different processes, functions, and properties of tundra ecosystems. Methods: Following a published protocol, our systematic review combined primary field studies retrieved from bibliographic databases, search engines and specialist websites that compared tundra ecosystem responses to different levels of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivore diversity. We used the number of functional groups of herbivores (i.e., functional group richness) as a measure of the diversity of the herbivore assemblage. We screened titles, abstracts, and full texts of studies using pre-defined eligibility criteria. We critically appraised the validity of the studies, tested the influence of different moderators, and conducted sensitivity analyses. Quantitative synthesis (i.e., calculation of effect sizes) was performed for ecosystem responses reported by at least five articles and meta-regressions including the effects of potential modifiers for those reported by at least 10 articles.Review findings: The literature searches retrieved 5944 articles. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 201 articles including 3713 studies (i.e., individual comparisons) were deemed relevant for the systematic review, with 2844 of these studies included in quantitative syntheses. The available evidence base on the effects of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems is concentrated around well-established research locations and focuses mainly on the impacts of vertebrate herbivores on vegetation. Overall, greater herbivore diversity led to increased abundance of feeding marks by herbivores and soil temperature, and to reduced total abundance of plants, graminoids, forbs, and litter, plant leaf size, plant height, and moss depth, but the effects of herbivore diversity were difficult to tease apart from those of excluding vertebrate herbivores. The effects of different functional groups of herbivores on graminoid and lichen abundance compensated each other, leading to no net effects when herbivore effects were combined. In turn, smaller herbivores and large-bodied herbivores only reduced plant height when occurring together but not when occurring separately. Greater herbivore diversity increased plant diversity in graminoid tundra but not in other habitat types. Conclusions: This systematic review underscores the importance of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and function of Arctic ecosystems, with different functional groups of herbivores exerting additive or compensatory effects that can be modulated by environmental conditions. Still, many challenges remain to fully understand the complex impacts of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems. Future studies should explicitly address the role of herbivore diversity beyond presence-absence, targeting a broader range of ecosystem responses and explicitly including invertebrate herbivores. A better understanding of the role of herbivore diversity will enhance our ability to predict whether and where shifts in herbivore assemblages might mitigate or further amplify the impacts of environmental change on Arctic ecosystems.

  • Determining the level of cervical radiculopathy : Agreement between visual inspection of pain drawings and magnetic resonance imaging
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Pain Practice. - : Wiley. - 1530-7085 .- 1533-2500. ; 23:1, s. 32-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims Pain drawings are commonly used in the clinical assessment of people with cervical radiculopathy. This study aimed to assess (1) the agreement of clinical interpretation of pain drawings and MRI findings in identifying the affected level of cervical radiculopathy, (2) the agreement of these predictions based on the pain drawing among four clinicians from two different professions (i.e., physiotherapy and surgery) and (3) the topographical pain distribution of people presenting with cervical radiculopathy (C4-C7). Methods Ninety-eight pain drawings were obtained from a baseline assessment of participants in a randomized clinical trial, in which single-level cervical radiculopathy was determined using MRI. Four experienced clinicians independently rated each pain drawing, attributing the pain distribution to a single nerve root (C4-C7). A post hoc analysis was performed to assess agreement. Outcome measures Percentage agreement and kappa values were used to assess the level of agreement. Topographic pain frequency maps were created for each cervical radiculopathy level as determined by MRI. Results The radiculopathy level determined from the pain drawings showed poor overall agreement with MRI (mean = 35.7%, K = -0.007 to 0.139). The inter-clinician agreement ranged from fair to moderate (K = 0.212-0.446). Topographic frequency maps revealed that pain distributions were widespread and overlapped markedly between patients presenting with different levels cervical radiculopathy. Conclusion This study revealed a lack of agreement between the segmental level affected determined from the patients pain drawing and the affected level as identified on MRI. The large overlap of pain and non-dermatomal distribution of pain reported by patients likely contributed to this result.

  • Targets and ion sources at CERN-ISOLDE - Facilities and developments
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research Section B-Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - 0168-583X. ; 542, s. 38-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility, thick targets are irradiated using a beam of 1.4-GeV protons. One of ISOLDE's key features is the large choice of ion source types and target materials available, enabling us to select the ideal combination for optimal intensity and purity of the isotopes requested by ISOLDE users. The ever-increasing demands in terms of isotope production yield, beam purity, and overall reliability of the employed systems are driving the continuous development efforts.Over the past few years, CERN has invested heavily in facilities and infrastructure that facilitate ongoing developments required for ISOLDE. A dedicated offline laboratory (Offline 2) has been recently equipped with high repetition rate nanosecond tunable lasers required for scheme development and developments of specialized laser ion source types such as VADLIS, LIST and PI-LIST. Moreover, it hosts a twin setup of the ISOLDE RFQ cooler and buncher (ISCOOL), which is envisaged to be used for studies of molecular beam creation and breakup, as well as the development of improved RFQ services and operational modes. For material development, particularly for nanostructured materials, the new nano laboratory has just been commissioned and will enable the production and development of nano actinide targets for ISOLDE. In this contribution we describe the infrastructure required for target and ion source developments, highlight recent efforts and experimental results on both target material development and ion source development, and provide an outlook on what to expect in the near future.

  • Does Pain Extent Predict Ongoing Pain and Disability in Patients with Chronic Whiplash-Associated Disorders?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Medicine. - : MDPI AG. - 2077-0383. ; 11:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates whether baseline pain extent, extracted from an electronic pain drawing, is an independent predictive factor of pain and disability measured 1 year and 2 years later in people with chronic WAD. Participants completed questionnaires assessing neck pain intensity, disability via the Neck Disability Index (NDI), psychological features, and work ability. Participants also completed electronic pain drawings from which their pain extent was extracted. A two-step modelling approach was undertaken to identify the crude and adjusted association between pain extent and NDI measured at 1-year and 2-year follow-ups. A total of 205 participants were included in the analysis. The univariate analysis showed that pain extent was significantly associated with the NDI score at the 1-year (p = 0.006, 95% CI: 0.159-0.909) and 2-year (p = 0.029, 0.057-0.914) follow-ups. These associations were not maintained when we introduced perceived disability, psychological health, and work ability into the model after 1 year (p = 0.56, 95%CI: -0.28-0.499) and 2 years (p = 0.401, -0.226-0.544). Pain extent, as an independent factor, was significantly associated with perceived pain and disability in patients with chronic WAD for up to 2 years. This association was masked by neck disability, psychological health, and work ability.

  • Graphene induced electrical percolation enables more efficient charge transport at a hybrid organic semiconductor/graphene interface
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 20:6, s. 4422-4428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-assembly of semiconducting polymer chains during crystallization from a liquid or melt dictates to a large degree the electronic properties of the resulting solid film. However, it is still unclear how charge transport pathways are created during crystallization. Here, we performed complementary in situ electrical measurements and synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), during slow cooling from the melt of highly regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films deposited on both graphene and on silicon. Two different charge transport mechanisms were identified, and were correlated to the difference in crystallites' orientations and overall amount of crystallites in the films on each surface as molecular self-assembly proceeded. On silicon, a weak charge transport was enabled as soon as the first edge-on lamellae formed, and further increased with the higher amount of crystallites (predominantly edge-on and randomly oriented lamellae) during cooling. On graphene however, the current remained low until a minimum amount of crystallites was reached, at which point interconnection of conducting units (face-on, randomly oriented lamellae and tie-chains) formed percolated conducting pathways across the film. This lead to a sudden rapid increase in current by approximate to 10 fold, and strongly enhanced charge transport, despite a much lower amount of crystallites than on silicon.

  • Functionalization of zwitterionic polymer brushes, do they remain antifouling?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Surface and Interface Analysis. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0142-2421 .- 1096-9918. ; 50:11, s. 1001-1006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymer brushes are surface coatings that can be tailored in many ways to suit specific demands including reduction of protein and bacterial fouling of biomaterials. Previously, we reported that antifouling poly (2-(methacryloxy)ethyl)dimethyl-3-sulphopropyl ammonium hydroxide) brushes dramatically reduced formation of bacterial biofilm. We hypothesized that: (1) this brush could be efficiently functionalized with a small molecule (2-oxo-2-[N-(2,4,6-trihydroxybenzylidene)-hydrazino]-acetamide, ME0163, hydrazone) and that (2) the antifouling property would remain also after functionalization. Diblock co-polymer brushes of 2-(methacryloxy)ethyl)dimethyl-3-sulphopropyl ammonium hydroxide and poly (glycidyl methacrylate) were formed by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and the ME0163 hydrazone was covalently bound to the surface via a ring-opening reaction. Functionalization of the surfaces was followed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The influence of temperature, reaction time, and reagent concentrations on the immobilization process was investigated. Surfaces with high degree of functionalization could be made in this way. However, the functionalization rendered the surface more hydrophobic, and the antifouling property of the brush was lost, thus, disproving the second of our starting hypotheses but corroborating the first.

  • Ultralow Percolation Threshold in Nanoconfined Domains
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 11:10, s. 9906-9913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-assembled percolated networks play an important role in many advanced electronic materials and devices. In nanocarbon composites, decreasing the percolation threshold phi(c) is of paramount importance to reduce nanotube bundling, minimize material resources and costs, and enhance charge transport. Here we demonstrate that three-dimensional nanoconfinement in single-wall carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposites produces a strong reduction in phi(c) reaching the lowest value ever reported in this system of phi(c) approximate to 1.8 X 10(-5) wt % and 4-5 orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical statistical percolation threshold oh phi(stat) Moreover, a change in network resistivity and electrical conduction was observed with increased confinement, and a simple resistive model is used to accurately estimate the difference in is in the confined networks. These results are explained in terms of networks' size, confinement, and tube orientation as determined by atomic force microscopy, electrical conductivity measurements, and polarized Raman spectroscopy. Our findings provide important insight into nanoscale percolated networks and should find application in electronic nanocomposites and devices.

  • In situ probing of the crystallization kinetics of rr-P3HT on single layer graphene as a function of temperature
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 19:12, s. 8496-8503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the molecular packing and crystallization of a highly regio-regular semiconducting polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) on both single layer graphene and silicon as a function of temperature, during cooling from the melt. The onset of crystallization, crystallites' size, orientation, and kinetics of formation were measured in situ by synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) during cooling and revealed a very different crystallization process on each surface. A favored crystalline orientation with out of plane pi-pi stacking formed at a temperature of 200 degrees C on graphene, whereas the first crystallites formed with an edge-on orientation at 185 degrees C on silicon. The crystallization of face-on lamellae revealed two surprising effects during cooling: (a) a constant low value of the pi-pi spacing below 60 degrees C; and (b) a reduction by half in the coherence length of face-on lamellae from 100 to 30 degrees C, which corresponded with the weakening of the 2nd or 3rd order of the in-plane (k00) diffraction peak. The final ratio of face-on to edge-on orientations was 40% on graphene, and 2% on silicon, revealing the very different crystallization mechanisms. These results provide a better understanding of how surfaces with different chemistries and intermolecular interactions with the polythiophene polymer chains lead to different crystallization processes and crystallites orientations for specific electronic applications.

  • Measurements of fiducial cross-sections for [Formula: see text] production with one or two additional b-jets in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]=8 TeV using the ATLAS detector.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiducial cross-sections for [Formula: see text] production with one or two additional b-jets are reported, using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, collected with the ATLAS detector. The cross-section times branching ratio for [Formula: see text] events with at least one additional b-jet is measured to be 950 [Formula: see text] 70 (stat.) [Formula: see text] (syst.) fb in the lepton-plus-jets channel and 50 [Formula: see text] 10 (stat.) [Formula: see text] (syst.) fb in the [Formula: see text] channel. The cross-section times branching ratio for events with at least two additional b-jets is measured to be 19.3 [Formula: see text] 3.5 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 5.7 (syst.) fb in the dilepton channel ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and ee) using a method based on tight selection criteria, and 13.5 [Formula: see text] 3.3 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 3.6 (syst.) fb using a looser selection that allows the background normalisation to be extracted from data. The latter method also measures a value of 1.30 [Formula: see text] 0.33 (stat.) [Formula: see text] 0.28 (syst.)% for the ratio of [Formula: see text] production with two additional b-jets to [Formula: see text] production with any two additional jets. All measurements are in good agreement with recent theory predictions.

  • Measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates and coupling strengths using pp collision data at [Formula: see text] and 8 TeV in the ATLAS experiment.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combined analyses of the Higgs boson production and decay rates as well as its coupling strengths to vector bosons and fermions are presented. The combinations include the results of the analyses of the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decay modes, and the constraints on the associated production with a pair of top quarks and on the off-shell coupling strengths of the Higgs boson. The results are based on the LHC proton-proton collision datasets, with integrated luminosities of up to 4.7 [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] TeV and 20.3 [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2011 and 2012. Combining all production modes and decay channels, the measured signal yield, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, is [Formula: see text]. The observed Higgs boson production and decay rates are interpreted in a leading-order coupling framework, exploring a wide range of benchmark coupling models both with and without assumptions on the Higgs boson width and on the Standard Model particle content in loop processes. The data are found to be compatible with the Standard Model expectations for a Higgs boson at a mass of 125.36 GeV for all models considered.
