    • The accuracy of theoretical mass, radius, and effective temperature values for M-dwarf stars is an active topic of debate. Differences between observed and theoretical values have raised the possibility that current theoretical stellar structure and evolution models are inaccurate towards the low-mass end of the main sequence. To explore this issue, we use the CHEOPS satellite to obtain high-precision light curves of eclipsing binaries with low-mass stellar companions. We use these light curves combined with the spectroscopic orbit for the solar-type companion to measure the mass, radius, and effective temperature of the M-dwarf star. Here, we present the analysis of three eclipsing binaries. We use the pycheops data analysis software to fit the observed transit and eclipse events of each system. Two of our systems were also observed by the TESS satellite - we similarly analyse these light curves for comparison. We find consistent results between CHEOPS and TESS, presenting three stellar radii and two stellar effective temperature values of low-mass stellar objects. These initial results from our on-going observing programme with CHEOPS show that we can expect to have similar to 24 new mass, radius, and effective temperature measurements for very low-mass stars within the next few years.

    • Eclipsing binaries are important benchmark objects to test and calibrate stellar structure and evolution models. This is especially true for binaries with a fully convective M-dwarf component for which direct measurements of these stars' masses and radii are difficult using other techniques. Within the potential of M-dwarfs to be exoplanet host stars, the accuracy of theoretical predictions of their radius and effective temperature as a function of their mass is an active topic of discussion. Not only the parameters of transiting exoplanets but also the success of future atmospheric characterization relies on accurate theoretical predictions. We present the analysis of five eclipsing binaries with low-mass stellar companions out of a subsample of 23, for which we obtained ultra-high-precision light curves using the CHEOPS satellite. The observation of their primary and secondary eclipses are combined with spectroscopic measurements to precisely model the primary parameters and derive the M-dwarfs mass, radius, surface gravity, and effective temperature estimates using the PYCHEOPS data analysis software. Combining these results to the same set of parameters derived from TESS light curves, we find very good agreement (better than 1 percent for radius and better than 0.2 percent for surface gravity). We also analyse the importance of precise orbits from radial velocity measurements and find them to be crucial to derive M-dwarf radii in a regime below 5 percent accuracy. These results add five valuable data points to the mass-radius diagram of fully convective M-dwarfs.

  • Dense sampling of bird diversity increases power of comparative genomics

    • Whole-genome sequencing projects are increasingly populating the tree of life and characterizing biodiversity(1-4). Sparse taxon sampling has previously been proposed to confound phylogenetic inference(5), and captures only a fraction of the genomic diversity. Here we report a substantial step towards the dense representation of avian phylogenetic and molecular diversity, by analysing 363 genomes from 92.4% of bird families-including 267 newly sequenced genomes produced for phase II of the Bird 10,000 Genomes (B10K) Project. We use this comparative genome dataset in combination with a pipeline that leverages a reference-free whole-genome alignment to identify orthologous regions in greater numbers than has previously been possible and to recognize genomic novelties in particular bird lineages. The densely sampled alignment provides a single-base-pair map of selection, has more than doubled the fraction of bases that are confidently predicted to be under conservation and reveals extensive patterns of weak selection in predominantly non-coding DNA. Our results demonstrate that increasing the diversity of genomes used in comparative studies can reveal more shared and lineage-specific variation, and improve the investigation of genomic characteristics. We anticipate that this genomic resource will offer new perspectives on evolutionary processes in cross-species comparative analyses and assist in efforts to conserve species. A dataset of the genomes of 363 species from the Bird 10,000 Genomes Project shows increased power to detect shared and lineage-specific variation, demonstrating the importance of phylogenetically diverse taxon sampling in whole-genome sequencing.

  • Structural responses of high performance sailing yachts to slamming loads

    • Experimental measurements of transient strains, local accelerations and pressure were undertaken on the IMOCA Open 60' class sailing yacht Paprec-Virbac III, and on a replica hull panel section tested in a laboratory slam testing facility. The approximately 1m x 0.7m panel for laboratory testing was manufactured on a mould taken from the plug used for the vessel construction, ensuring that the panel had identical curved geometry to the vessel. The laboratory panel included two stringers as on the same region of the vessel. An instrumentation layout including arrays of resistance strain gauges, accelerometers and a transient pressure transducer was used. Linear displacement transducers were used to measure panel deformations during the laboratory tests. The laboratory testing was undertaken at a range of constant impact velocities from 0.5 to 3m/s using a Servohydraulic Slam Testing System. Sea-trials were undertaken in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland New Zealand. There was good qualitative agreement between the field and laboratory measurements in regard to timing and relative magnitudes of strains at different positions on the structure. Results demonstrate that the hull structure undergoes very complex transient deformations during the slamming events.

  • Hydroelastic behaviour of slam loaded composite hull panels

    • The effects of stiffness on hydroelastic responses of composite marine hull panels subjected to water slamming loads have been experimentally characterised. Panels included a very flexible single skin laminate, a medium stiffness sandwich panel and a very stiff sandwich panel. Panels were tested at a deadrise angle of 10° for a range of water impact velocities from 0.5 to 7m/s in a Servo-hydraulic Slam Testing System. Results demonstrate that the panel stiffness has a significant effect on the responses of slam loaded composite panels. Flexible panels had reductions in the local velocity at the centre of the panel relative to the water, reducing peak pressures at the panel centre. Pressures increased near to the chine edge of the panel, possibly due to reductions in the local deadrise angle due to panel deformation. Such effects were particularly noticeable when the loading rate was of similar order to the first natural frequency of the panel. The implications of the effects of panel stiffness on effective pressure and panel structural response on composite structural design are discussed.

  • Experimental hydroelastic characterization of slamming loaded marine panels

    • The paper presents a method to experimentally characterize the significance of hydroelasticity for slamming loaded marine panels. The methodology is based on a large number of systematical experiments of slamming loaded panels from which semi-empiric expressions for the pressure distributions are derived. Finite element simulations are used to obtain rigid/quasi-static reference solutions. Hydroelastic effects are quantified by comparing deflections and strains from experiments with the corresponding non-hydroelastic reference solutions. The study shows that the largest hydro-elastic effects appear to be a time-lag effect, which however does not seem to affect the structural response magnitudes dramatically. The most significant hydroelastic effects can be expected to be close to the panel supports for very flexible structures or sandwich constructions. The results are also discussed with reference to classification rules which indicate that hydroelastic effects are small in the design of conventional ship hull structures.
