    • This thesis examines teachers’ voices on the latest curriculum reform and how teachers experience the impact of the reform on their teaching. The aim of this study is to contribute to knowledge about the conditions of the implementation of a new reform and how the reform controls and empowers teachers’ teaching. I examine the issue using the concepts from curriculum theory and implementation theory as well as visible and invisible pedagogy. Primary school teachers, Grades 1-3 (n=224) within an entire municipality responded to an extensive questionnaire concerning their relation to the reform. The questionnaire was developed from qualitative interviews and questionnaires with open questions. The new curriculum reform tends towards increased control but the results show that the majority of teachers consider both the curriculum and the national examinations for Grade 3 as a support in their teaching and assessment. Most teachers express that the recent curriculum increases their professionalism. Yet there is a tension between positive and negative experiences of the reform, as some teachers express that the new curriculum and the national tests limit their professional freedom while other teachers express that they would like even more detailed support and guidance. There are also teachers who think it is too early to introduce goals, in the form of knowledge requirements and national tests, because it violates the students’ right to develop at their own pace based on their prerequisites. Further, most teachers in the study state that they have been affected by the goals and the national tests, but at a school level a common plan in mathematics and routines to discuss the goals of mathematics education is often lacking. The study also shows that national tests are not used in order to improve the mathematics results of the whole school. The factor analysis shows that there are differences between teachers’ voices depending on their age, their teaching experience, and if they are graduated before or after the reform of 1994. The different expressions can be linked to teachers’ voices of teacher professionalism, of student learning and maturity. The results of the study are of interest for various actors at different educational levels like politicians, curriculum authors and principals. By taking part of the study they have the opportunity to gain more knowledge of how to create good conditions to support teachers to enact the curriculum in their classrooms.

    • This paper reports the results of a quantitative study on primary teachers' (n=253) views on the introduction of steering documents and national examinations for Grade 3. While the majority of the teachers experience the reform as empowering, some teachers feel the new curriculum and the national examination restrict their teacher professionalism. We found differences in how teachers viewed the reform depending on whether they had graduated before or after the reform in 1994. The differing views can be connected to teachers' beliefs about teacher professionalism and the relation between teaching, learning and maturing. We discuss our findings also in the light of curriculum development during the last four decades.

  • A High Precision Method for Quantitative Measurements of Reactive Oxygen Species in Frozen Biopsies

    • Objective: An electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique using the spin probe cyclic hydroxylamine 1-hydroxy-3-methoxycarbonyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine (CMH) was introduced as a versatile method for high precision quantification of reactive oxygen species, including the superoxide radical in frozen biological samples such as cell suspensions, blood or biopsies. Materials and Methods: Loss of measurement precision and accuracy due to variations in sample size and shape were minimized by assembling the sample in a well-defined volume. Measurement was carried out at low temperature (150 K) using a nitrogen flow Dewar. The signal intensity was measured from the EPR 1st derivative amplitude, and related to a sample, 3-carboxy-proxyl (CPN) with known spin concentration. Results: The absolute spin concentration could be quantified with a precision and accuracy better than +/- 10 mu M (k = 1). The spin concentration of samples stored at -80 degrees C could be reproduced after 6 months of storage well within the same error estimate. Conclusion: The absolute spin concentration in wet biological samples such as biopsies, water solutions and cell cultures could be quantified with higher precision and accuracy than normally achievable using common techniques such as flat cells, tissue cells and various capillary tubes. In addition; biological samples could be collected and stored for future incubation with spin probe, and also further stored up to at least six months before EPR analysis, without loss of signal intensity. This opens for the possibility to store and transport incubated biological samples with known accuracy of the spin concentration over time.

  • Acetylsalicylic acid treatment until surgery reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting

    • OBJECTIVES: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is a cornerstone in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) due to its antiplatelet effect. Cessation of aspirin before coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is often recommended to avoid bleeding, but the practice is controversial because it is suggested to worsen the underlying CAD. The aims of the present prospective, randomized study were to assess if ASA administration until the day before CABG decreases the oxidative load through a reduction of inflammation and myocardial damage, compared with patients with preoperative discontinuation of ASA. METHODS: Twenty patients scheduled for CABG were randomly assigned to either routine ASA-treatment (160 mg daily) until the time of surgery (ASA), or to ASA-withdrawal 7 days before surgery (No-ASA). Blood-samples were taken from a radial artery and coronary sinus, during and after surgery and analysed for 8-iso-prostaglandin (PG) F(2α); a major F(2)-isoprostane, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), cytokines and troponin T. Left ventricle Tru-Cut biopsies were taken from viable myocardium close to the left anterior descending artery just after connection to cardiopulmonary bypass, and before cardioplegia were established for gene analysis (Illumina HT-12) and immunohistochemistry (CD45). RESULTS: 8-Iso-PGF(2α) at baseline (t(1)) were 111 (277) pmol/l and 221 (490) pmol/l for ASA and No-ASA, respectively (P = 0.065). Area under the curve showed a significantly lower level in plasma concentration of 8-iso-PGF(2α) and hsCRP in the ASA group compared with the No-ASA group with (158 pM vs 297 pM, P = 0.035) and hsCRP (8.4 mg/l vs 10.1 mg/l, P = 0.013). All cytokines increased during surgery, but no significant differences between the two groups were observed. Nine genes (10 transcripts) were found with a false discovery rate (FDR) <0.1 between the ASA and No-ASA groups. CONCLUSIONS: Continued ASA treatment until the time of CABG reduced oxidative and inflammatory responses. Also, a likely beneficial effect upon myocardial injury was noticed. Although none of the genes known to be involved in oxidative stress or inflammation took a different expression in myocardial tissue, the genetic analysis showed interesting differences in the mRNA level. Further research in this field is necessary to understand the role of the genes.

  • Where Scholars are Made : Gendered Arenas of Persona Formation in Finnish Folkloristics, 1918–1932

    • This dissertation investigates how two Finnish folklorists, Elsa Enäjärvi (1901–1951) and Martti Haavio (1899–1973), obtained information about perceptions of what constituted good and acknowledged scholars and how they responded to these implicit and explicit expectations and requirements. The dissertation uses the concept of scholarly persona as an analytical tool to identify notions of good scholars as well as Enäjärvi’s and Haavio’s processes to form themselves as such. The analysis is based on a deep reading of private and public documents, with an emphasis on Enäjärvi’s and Haavio’s diaries and private letters to each other and friends in academia.The dissertation’s timeframe, 1918–1932, covers Enäjärvi’s and Haavio’s earliest years at university, from attending university to obtaining doctoral degrees. Being new to the academic community meant that these two young folklorists were in acute need of information regarding expectations and requirements in their discipline. Reflecting over observations of other scholars and sharing these observations with peers were important means of forming oneself as a scholar. This formation process was often articulated by making normative descriptions of the personal qualities, behaviour and research of other academics. By describing what was desirable, acceptable or inept in scholars, Enäjärvi and Haavio established what they themselves were like as scholars. The analysis also shows that the early phase of scholarly persona formation included informal rites of passage that integrated the students deeper into the academic community. The letters to friends offered a forum to make and test these formative descriptions and to reflect upon and give meaning to these rites of passage.The dissertation makes a systematic analysis of six arenas of Enäjärvi’s and Haavio’s academic life, where scholarly personae were formed: the university, the capital Helsinki, fieldwork, the transnational exchange with Estonian academics, international scholarly communities in Western Europe, and the scholarly home. The analysis shows that these arenas activated different dimensions of the folklorists’ persona. Moreover, the analysis shows that the different arenas activated different gendered practices and expectations of scholars and academic life.
