  • Lagerstedt, Marianne, 1967- (författare)
  • Mot nätverkssjukvård i komplex miljö : - behov av en vetenskaplig syn på ledning för säker vård och effektiv resursanvändning
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since 2008 advanced home healthcare agencies (ASiH) in a larger Swedish county council has underwent a transformation, to become part of a coming concept: networked healthcare (NVS). NVS means that intermediate multi-organizational healthcare (IMV) will be produced often in the home, and from 2013 to an increasing number of patients in different age groups with different diagnoses and medical conditions - in large variability of needs. At the same time IMV has proved to be not simply practical to implement in a resource-efficient and patientsafe way. Based on theories from Command and Control Science the safetyproblem that arise in connection with IMV is a sign of the less known increasing need of the direction and coordination support that IMV requires. With a casestudy based research approach with interactive elements, different qualitative methods has been used in two phases between 2008 - 2013. The first phase is characterized by a phenomenological approach, while the second phase has a critical hermeneutic approach. Research methods includes fieldvisits with informal discussions, in-depth interviews, validation with respondents and two different methodologies for textanalysis. The main result shows that practical aggravating circumstances for safe care consists of lesser known and from 2013 increasing problems with direction and coordination, through expanded advanced IMV in the home as a part of NVS concept. This also as a result of inadequate and inappropriate direction and coordination support for IMV.The thesis concludes that the NVS represents a resource intensive health care concept, which requires a new view on the management issue and a network-related methodology for direction and coordination. This is to promote ethical, equitable, patientsafe and dignified advanced IMV so an optimized use of resources can be implemented, through shared responsibility and coordination in patientuniquely designed networkconstellations as a given work model.

  • Studies in Industrial Renewal : Coping with Changing Contexts
  • 2011. - 200
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this book is to provide a picture of ongoing research at Mälardalen University in order to create a point of departure for future research on industrial renewal. Many aspects of industrial renewal are dealt with by the researchers who contributed to this book. Some of them focus on functional aspects such as distribution channels and management accounting and control. Others deal with broad perspectives such as strategies and entrepreneurship, and still others consider specific empirical fields such as the institutions of society, and the energy sector. Our exposition identifies a need for further research into classical problems such as how to best exploit new ideas in established firms, as well as how to infuse new approaches and attitudes into going concerns, the role of the characteristics of industrial networks, geographical distance, the labour market, and the institutions of society in such renewal processes, and the need for more in-depth process research in order to further develop theory and practice.

  • Välfärdsektorn, en arena för makt och motstånd : Studier av sjukvård och hemtjänst

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today there is a growing interest in research on concrete practice within organizations, which has implications for the understanding of how performance management works. New control ideals are often introduced in an organizational and socially embedded practice, where taken for granted assumptions about what is right and wrong or good and bad actions are already established. Governance can ideally be seen as an interaction between structure and actor, where the former both guides and limits the conduct of the latter. However, in this thesis I can show that local actors can act differently and exhibit resistance in interactions with their superiors, thus they are not as passive as the ideal assumes. The theoretical framework is based on Giddens' structuration theory that stresses there is a dialectical relationship between structure and actor. (New)institutional theory contributes to get insights into the participants' behavior and that meaning is shaped by wider institutional influences. The empirical data in this thesis consists of two studies; an inter-organizational care chain project and a study in assisted living. Both studies were carried out as case studies where qualitative interviews, observations, and various official documents have been used. In the care chain project the aim is to produce knowledge about how a change process has been undertaken to promote the development of a seamless chain of care between different healthcare providers. The assisted living study examines how the interaction between actor and structure manifests at three critical events. Within the work units (the actors) knowledge and practices are established, based on care ideals. Economically administrative ideal (the structure) is based on a hierarchical approach in which goals and metrics are linked to budgets, activities and standards and where decision-making is decoupled from the actual work. This decoupling can make the work more clearly measured, monitored and streamlined, thus keeping players accountable for their actions and achievements. The actors are seen as cogs in a machine rather than as insightful and engaged. Therefore they are assigned to an inconspicuous place in the framework that the financial administrative ideal has determined. This ideal is the cornerstone of New Public Management (NPM) and holds the private sector as a model in terms of management, steering and control of a business. Although local actors can exhibit resistance towards this ideal, they still are limited by its authoritative power of determining the allocation of resources.

  • The Role of Timing in the Business Model Evolution of Spinoffs: The Case of C3 Technologies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Research Technology Management. - : Taylor & Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 0895-6308 .- 1930-0166. ; 62:4, s. 19-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Overview: The view of time that dominates conventional management thinking, including the Lean Startup movement’s “fail fast and pivot” approach, often leads to failure in the business model evolution of new ventures spinning off from established firms. Timing is critical for spinoffs because it is a key element of the balance between minimizing risk and maximizing opportunity. In the literature on business model evolution and lean startups, however, the issue of timing is given limited consideration. To address this issue, we present and analyze the role of timing in the business model evolution of C3 Technologies, a spinoff from Saab. The results offer insight regarding the use of managed timing to allow evolutionary processes to let the right moment present itself—and enable the organization to move quickly to seize the moment. This approach allows managers to control the evolutionary process despite the high uncertainty associated with exploring new business models.

  • Creating New Attention in Management Control
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The need to focus and economize on scarce attention is increasingly being acknowledged within management accounting and control literature. The aim of this study is to investigate how practitioners go about creating new concepts and measurements to induce attention towards new issues and as-pects of strategic importance for the organization. In this case study, we follow a project group in a Swedish municipality, creating a management control model of employee health. A close-up view is provided through a narrative approach, based on filming and participant observation, illustrating the highly situated and contextual character of atten-tion in sensemaking processes. The naming of the concepts of management control was found to be associated with a science-framing, while references to local practices of management control induced practice-framing strongly de-emphasizing characteristic features of management control. Line-managers of the study accepted the framework without demands for indica-tors or predictive models. This outcome is in line with a practice notion of management control and a language-game understanding of human communication: management control systems are part of the practices defining meaning and directing at-tention towards different aspects of any situation. Rather than being a lan-guage, management control concepts and measurement may not provide much more than the phonetics of business. Consequently, it may be ques-tioned whether what gets measured automatically gets managed. In line with the attention-based view of the firm and a practice notion of management control, this study suggests that new attention is created through the naming and framing of management control ideals, and as a result of the expressions of managerial intent through practices.

  • Data quality and analysts’ role in AI enhanced C2
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium (ICCRTS) proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Command and Control (C2) raises questions about the interaction between operators on different levels on the one hand and AI-supported information systems on the other. For some purposes, the aggregation and analysis of large “big data”-sets creates potential for prediction and calculations of probabilities, while for other purposes human heuristics may be as promising depending on the situation. What has been more rarely discussed, is the very quality of data underpinning such calculations, and thus also operators’ awareness of the validity of predictions in relation to any specific situation. This is an urgent debate, considering the fact that full transparency may be impossible and underpinning data may be based on exercises, simulations, real-time data, or a mix thereof. Based on a fundamental classification of different kinds of uncertainties, this article discusses how data of different origins and quality can be managed and communicated to allow for operators to assess on what basis predictions are made. The article further suggests that looking at other fields of research may be useful for exploring unconventional ways of highlighting the existence and quality of different kinds of data of different origins in order to assess its predictive power. Finally, the article discusses how AI may change the role of analysts with regard to such issues.
