  • Diagnostic of laser contrast using target reflectivity
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 94:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using three different laser systems, we demonstrate a convenient and simple plasma based diagnostic of the contrast of high-power short-pulse lasers. The technique is based on measuring the specular reflectivity from a solid target. The reflectivity remains high even at relativistic intensities above 10(19) W/cm(2) in the case of a high-contrast prepulse-free laser. On the contrary, the specular reflectivity drops with increasing intensities in the case of systems with insufficient contrast due to beam breakup and increased absorption caused by preplasma.

  • Impact of pathogen reduction methods on immunological properties of the COVID-19 convalescent plasma
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Vox Sanguinis. - : Wiley. - 0042-9007 .- 1423-0410. ; 116:6, s. 665-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and objectives: COVID-19 convalescent plasma is an experimental treatment against SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of different pathogen reduction methods on the levels and virus neutralizing activity of the specific antibodies against SARS-CoV2 in convalescent plasma. Materials and methods: A total of 140 plasma doses collected by plasmapheresis from COVID-19 convalescent donors were subjected to pathogen reduction by three methods: methylene blue (M)/visible light, riboflavin (R)/UVB and amotosalen (A)/UVA. To conduct a paired comparison, individual plasma doses were divided into 2 samples that were subjected to one of these methods. The titres of SARS-CoV2 neutralizing antibodies (NtAbs) and levels of specific immunoglobulins to RBD, S- and N-proteins of SARS-CoV-2 were measured before and after pathogen reduction. Results: The methods reduced NtAbs titres differently: among units with the initial titre 80 or above, 81% of units remained unchanged and 19% decreased by one step after methylene blue; 60% were unchanged and 40% decreased by one step after amotosalen; after riboflavin 43% were unchanged and 50% (7%, respectively) had a one-step (two-step, respectively) decrease. Paired two-sample comparisons (M vs. A, M vs. R and A vs. R) revealed that the largest statistically significant decrease in quantity and activity of the specific antibodies resulted from the riboflavin treatment. Conclusion: Pathogen reduction with methylene blue or with amotosalen provides the greater likelihood of preserving the immunological properties of the COVID-19 convalescent plasma compared to riboflavin.

  • Laser-Particle Collider for Multi-GeV Photon Production
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 122:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an alternative to Compton backscattering and bremsstrahlung, the process of colliding high-energy electron beams with strong laser fields can more efficiently provide both a cleaner and brighter source of photons in the multi-GeV range for fundamental studies in nuclear and quark-gluon physics. In order to favor the emission of high-energy quanta and minimize their decay into electron-positron pairs, the fields must not only be sufficiently strong, but also well localized. We here examine these aspects and develop the concept of a laser-particle collider tailored for high-energy photon generation. We show that the use of multiple colliding laser pulses with 0.4 PW of total power is capable of converting more than 18% of multi-GeV electrons passing through the high-field region into photons, each of which carries more than half of the electron initial energy. © 2019 authors. • Feeding convergence among ray-finned fishes : Teeth of the herbivorous actinopterygians from the latest Permian of East European Platform, Russia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. - : INST PALEOBIOLOGII PAN. - 0567-7920 .- 1732-2421. ; 65:1, s. 71-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A unique functional adaptation to herbivory within early ray-finned fishes is exemplified by the late Permian actinopterygians within the family Etuynotoidiidae with policuspid teeth strongly modified with respect to the primitive actinopterygian conditions. Here we report additional finds of multidenticulated teeth from the fluvial latest Permian deposits of Russia. The teeth belong to the members of endemic Eurynotoidiidae and show rather high morphological diversity. We confirm that the Russian forms are the earliest known ray-finned fishes with substantial modifications of teeth adapted to the processing of food. These finds confirm some previous suggestions that the adaptation to herbivory first developed in freshwater fishes, not marine. We found very similar dental adaptations in some groups of Recent freshwater teleosts, especially in characifonns and cichlids. It suggests that sympatric species of Permian Eurynotoidiidae explored various herbivorous niches like modem fish in East African lakes. Apparently, this first pulse of adaptive radiation in ray-finned fishes was probably caused by diversification of Permian aquatic vertebrate community.

  • Signatures of Non-linear Compton Scattering in Scattered Angular Spectra
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Optica Nonlinear Optics Topical Meeting 2023, NLO 2023.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulated electron and photon angular spectra produced by non-linear Compton scattering using different models (LCFA, LMA, classical) are characterized. Signatures to differentiate between models are found and assessed for their ability to be measured experimentally.

  • The application of laser-driven proton beams to the radiography of intense laser–hohlraum interactions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 1367-2630. ; 12:4, s. 045006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasma expansion following the interaction of an intense laser beam with the inner surface of gold hohlraums, emulating conditions relevant to indirect drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF), has been investigated by a radiographic technique which employs a beam of laser-accelerated protons. This probing technique has made it possible to measure the electric field distribution associated with the plasma front and its propagation throughout the interior of the hohlraum with a temporal and spatial resolution of the order of a few ps and μm, respectively. The data indicate that the expanding plasma slows down approaching the opposite walls, possibly due to the interaction with x-ray heated plasma from the non-irradiated walls. The electric field at the plasma front shows a bipolar structure, suggesting the presence of ion-acoustic soliton-like structures cotraveling with the front. Data obtained using enclosed hohlraums suggest the feasibility of this type of diagnosis in gas-filled hohlraums, as currently employed in ICF experiments.
