- All geoscientists working with the geology of Sweden are invited to join a common effort to review Swedish geological nomenclature and the naming of geological units and other features. A new guide, the Guide for geological nomenclature in Sweden, provides advice for this review process. The Geological Survey of Sweden will set up a new open and freely accessible database for geological names, and a dedicated name committee with mandate to formally approve proposed names will supervise the naming process. The success of this vital long-term commitment will depend on active participation of the geoscientific community at large.

- Pigs are used for long-term biomedical experiments requiring repeated injections, infusions and collections of blood samples. Thus, it is necessary for vascular catheters to be indwelling to avoid undue stress to the animals and the use of restraints. We propose a refined model of percutaneous insertion of long-term central venous catheters to minimize the surgical trauma and postoperative complications associated with catheter insertion. Different sizes of needles (18 Ga versus 21 Ga) for initial puncture of the veins were compared. In conventional pigs weighing less than 30 kg, catheter insertion may be facilitated by using a microintroducer set with a 21 Ga needle. In pigs weighing 50 kg, a standard 18 Ga needle may be preferable.

- Along the Sutlej valley, the lower package of the Higher Himalayan Crystallines (HHC) exposes a small concordant to discordant intrusive grey granite-The Maglad Khad Granite, within garnet mica schist/banded gneiss of the Jeori Formation. This body is fine grained and foliated along the margins, whereas the central part is relatively undeformed. This body along with aplites and pegmatites intrudes the country rock during early to syn-D-1 deformation. This is later affected by the most pervasive D-2-deformation producing gneissosity within the granite. U-Pb dating of zircons by conventional isotopic dilution technique yield an upper intercept age of 2068 +/- 5 Ma (2 sigma) from 6 zircon-fractions with MSWD=0.93, constraining the age of crystallization in the basal parts of the HHC during Early Proterozoic as well as the constraining pre-Himalayan fabric development.

A Sequential Probability Ratio Test Method for Quality Monitoring in Robotised GMA Welding

- This paper deals with the problem of automatic monitoring the weld quality when welding with Gas Metal Arc (GMA) in short circuiting mode. Experiments with two different types of T-joints are performed in order to provoke optimal and non-optimal welding conditions. During the experiments, voltage and current are measured from the welding process. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, the repeated Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), is used. The algorithm can equivalently be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) - type test. The test statistics is based upon the fluctuations of amplitude in the weld voltage. It is shown that the fluctuations of the weld voltage amplitude decreases when the welding process is not operating under optimal condition. The results obtained from the experiments indicate that it is possible to detect changes in the weld quality automatically and on-line.

- This paper addresses the problems involved in the automatic monitoring of the weld quality produced by robotized short-arc welding. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, the repeated Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), was used. The algorithm may similarly be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) type test, and is well-suited to detecting sudden minor changes in the monitored test statistic. The test statistic is based on the variance of the weld voltage, wherein it will be shown that the variance decreases when the welding process is not operating under optimal conditions. The performance of the algorithm is assessed through the use of experimental data. The results obtained from the algorithm show that it is possible to detect changes in weld quality automatically and on-line.

- Ligand stimulation of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) beta-receptor leads to activation of its intrinsic tyrosine kinase and autophosphorylation of the intracellular part of the receptor. The autophosphorylated tyrosine residues mediate interactions with downstream signal transduction molecules and thereby initiate different signalling pathways. A pathway leading to activation of the GTP-binding protein Ras involves the adaptor molecule GRB2. Here we show that Tyr-716, a novel autophosphorylation site in the PDGF beta-receptor kinase insert, mediates direct binding of GRB2 in vitro and in vivo. In a panel of mutant PDGF beta-receptors, in which Tyr-716 and the previously known autophosphorylation sites were individually mutated, only PDGFR beta Y716F failed to bind GRB2. Furthermore, a synthetic phosphorylated peptide containing Tyr-716 bound GRB2, and this peptide specifically interrupted the interaction between GRB2 and the wild-type receptor. In addition, the Y716(P) peptide significantly decreased the amount of GTP bound to Ras in response to PDGF in permeabilized fibroblasts as well as in porcine aortic endothelial cells expressing transfected PDGF beta-receptors. The mutant PDGFR beta Y716F still mediated activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases and an increased DNA synthesis in response to PDGF, indicating that multiple signal transduction pathways transduce mitogenic signals from the activated PDGF beta-receptor.
