  • Importance of social capital at the workplace for return to work among women with a history of long-term sick leave: a cohort study

    • Background: The workplace is an essential source of social capital for many people; it provides mutual support and gives meaning to life. However, few prospective studies have thoroughly investigated the importance of aspects of social capital in the workplace. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between aspects of social capital (social support, sense of community, and quality of leadership) at the workplace, and work ability, working degree, and vitality among women with a history of long-term sick leave from human service organizations. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was performed among women with a history of long-term sick leave. The study started in 2005, and the women were followed up at 6 months, 1 year, and 6 years using self-reported questionnaires (baseline n = 283). Linear mixed models were used for longitudinal analysis of the repeated measurements of prospective degree of work ability, working degree, and vitality. Analyses were performed with different models; the explanatory variables for each model were social support, sense of community, and quality of leadership and time. Results: Social capital in terms of quality of leadership (being good at solving conflicts and giving high priority to job satisfaction), sense of community (co-operation between colleagues) and social support (help and support from immediate superiors and colleagues) increased the women's work ability score (WAS) as well as working degree over time. Additionally, social capital in terms of quality of leadership increased the women's vitality score over time. Conclusions: A sustainable return-to-work process among individuals with a history of long-term sick leave, going in and out of work participation, could be supported with social support, good quality of leadership, and a sense of community at the workplace. The responsibility for the rehabilitation process can not be reduced to an individual problem, but ought to include all stakeholders involved in the process, such as managers, colleagues, health care services, and the social security agency.

  • Risk factors for generally reduced productivity--a prospective cohort study of young adults with neck or upper-extremity musculoskeletal symptoms.

    • OBJECTIVES: This study prospectively assessed the importance of individual conditions and computer use during school or work and leisure time as risk factors for self-reported generally reduced productivity due to musculoskeletal complaints among young adults with musculoskeletal symptoms in the neck or upper extremities. METHODS: A cohort of 2914 young adults (18-25 years, vocational school and college or university students) responded to an internet-based questionnaire concerning musculoskeletal symptoms related to individual conditions and computer use during school or work and leisure time that possibly affected general productivity. Prevalence ratios (PR) were used to assess prospective risk factors for generally reduced productivity. RESULTS: The selected study sample (N=1051) had reported neck or upper-extremity symptoms. At baseline, 280 of them reported reduced productivity. A follow-up of the 771 who reported no reduced productivity was carried out after 1 year. Risk factors for self-reported generally reduced productivity for those followed-up were symptoms in two or three locations or dimensions for the upper back or neck and the shoulders, arms, wrists, or hands [PR 2.30, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.40-3.78], symptoms persisting longer than 90 days in the shoulders, arms, wrists, or hands (PR 2.50, 95% CI 1.12-5.58), current symptoms in the shoulders, arms, wrists, or hands (PR 1.78, 95% CI 1.10-2.90) and computer use 8-14 hours/week during leisure time (PR 2.32, 95% CI 1.20-4.47). A stronger relationship was found if three or four risk factors were present. For women, a relationship was found between generally reduced productivity and widespread and current symptoms in the upper extremities. CONCLUSIONS: The main risk factors for generally reduced productivity due to musculoskeletal symptoms among young adults in this study were chronic symptoms in the upper extremities and widespread symptoms in the neck and upper extremities.

    • Decent and safe working conditions and non-discrimination in the rights of compensation for serious occupational disorders are of central policy concern in Sweden and for societies in a global sustainability perspective (UN). Despite overall improvements in work-related health in the WHO European Region, inequities within countries persist (WHO, 2019) and relatively large health inequalities still prevail also in welfare countries, such as Sweden (Mackenbach, 2019). The UN SDG target 8.8 consider “Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women and migrants, and those in precarious employment”. While a number of studies within occupational health research have focused inequalities in relation to gender (sex), few studies have focused migrant workers and the combined sustainability approach of inequalities related to migrant status and gender perspectives. This paper reviews studies of indicators of target achievement regarding frequency rates of occupational disorders and equal compensation for occupational disorders, in particular for migrant workers. The aim is to identify and critically analyze previous research conducted within the indicators (the applied methodology and results) and suggest areas where research and academy may contribute towards achievement in these matter.

    • Det har i tidigare forskning framhållits att det är viktigt att angripa arbetsplatsfaktorer inklusive arbetskrav och arbetsresurser för att skapa en hållbar arbetsmiljö inom sjukvården. Syftet var att undersöka vilka arbetskrav respektive arbetsresurser som har störst betydelse för undersköterskors respektive sjuksköterskors intention att sluta samt om det finns gemensamma faktorer som också förklarar arbetstillfredsställelse och utmattning. En longitudinell enkätstudie med undersköterskor och sjuksköterskor vid fem svenska sjukhus genomfördes. Resultaten visade att det fanns samband mellan de flesta inkluderade arbetsresurserna och arbetskraven och undersköterskors och sjuksköterskors intention att sluta, på tvärsnittsnivå. Prospektiva analyser visade samband mellan kvantitativa krav för undersköterskors intention att sluta även efter kontroll för kön och yrkeserfarenhet. För sjuksköterskor hade särskilt erkänsla, betydelse för intention att sluta, och även för deras arbetstillfredsställelse och utmattning. Kortare yrkeserfarenhet predicerade sjuksköterskors intention att sluta samt både undersköterskors och sjuksköterskors utmattning.

  • Job demands and functional resources moderating assistant and Registered Nurses' intention to leave

    • Aims To investigate how job demands and resources interact with each other to predict intention to leave among assistant nurses and Registered Nurses. Design Longitudinal study. Methods Questionnaire data were collected yearly during three years (October 2012-December 2014) from Registered Nurses (RN) and assistant nurses (N = 840) employed in Swedish hospitals. Associations and interaction effects of demands and resources were assessed with correlation analyses and regression models. Results Job demands predicted assistant nurses' intentions to leave, while resources predicted RNs' intention to leave. For RNs, several resources were functional in moderating the associations between demands and intention to leave: social support, vertical trust, and humanity moderated work pace and workflow moderated emotional demands. For assistant nurses, organizational clarity and interprofessional collaboration moderated emotional demands. None of the resources had a moderating effect on the associations between quantitative demands or illegitimate tasks and intention to leave.

En hållbar verksamhetsutveckling bidrar till god arbetsmiljö, god arbetskvalité och effektiv verksamhet. Det lärandeklimat som finns på arbetsplatsen är ofta avgörande för att åstadkomma ett långsiktigt utvecklingsarbete med positiva effekter. Det är mycket som pekar på att ett hållbart utvecklingsarbete handlar om att komma in i en positiv lärandespiral. Genom att avsätta tid för att uppriktigt och förutsättningslöst försöka förbättra hur arbetet leds och organiseras så skapas också ett engagemang hos medarbetare för att delta i förbättringsarbetet. Detta i sin tur medför olika positiva resultat för både individen och organisationen. På arbetsplatser som kännetecknas av ett positivt lärandeklimat finns det helt enkelt ett större engagemang bland medarbetare kring utveckling av såväl verksamheten som personalgruppens gemensamma bästa. Avsikten med den här handboken är att stödja arbetsplatser i att utveckla en gynnsam lärandespiral. Handboken ger vägledning i att skapa förutsättningar för lärande som bidrar till hållbar verksamhetsutveckling.

  • The Potential Importance of Social Capital and Job Crafting for Work Engagement and Job Satisfaction among Health-Care Employees

    • (1) Background: Both employees and organizations benefit from a work environment characterized by work engagement and job satisfaction. This study examines the influence of work-group social capital on individuals' work engagement, job satisfaction, and job crafting. In addition, the mediating effect of job crafting between social capital on the one side and job satisfaction and work engagement on the other side was analyzed. (2) Methods: This study used data from 250 health-care employees in Sweden who had completed a questionnaire at two time points (six to eight months apart). Analyses of separate cross-lagged panel designs were conducted using structural regression modeling with manifest variables. (3) Results: Social capital was predictive of both job satisfaction and work engagement over time. The results also indicated that higher degrees of social capital was predictive of more cognitive and relational, but not task-related job crafting over time. There was no clear evidence for a mediating effect of job crafting for social capital to work engagement or job satisfaction. (4) Conclusion: It would be beneficial for the health-care sector to consider setting up the organizations to promote social capital within work groups. Individual workers would gain in well-being and the organization is likely to gain in efficiency and lower turnover rates.
