  • A method for measuring and valuing transport time variability in logistics and cost benefit analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0739-8859 .- 1875-7979. ; 66, s. 59-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The freight transport system is subject to delays and disturbances, which influence investment and planning decisions made by governments and infrastructure authorities. Traditionally relying on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) they are dependent on correct and up-to-date input data. So far, little success has been reached in estimating the effects of disturbances for freight. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of disturbances in freight transport by reviewing and classifying the effects occurring due to transport time variability (TTV) and to suggest a calculation model to estimate the value of transport time variability (VTTV). In order to validate the model and its usability it was successfully tested in a case study for a large Swedish retail company. The effects of delays can be divided into four main types: System Killers, Catastrophic Events, Expected Risks, and Contingencies, of which the last two are relevant for VTTV. The model applies these in a two-step cost function with a fixed and variable part, building on previous studies of VTW for passenger transport based on the scheduling utility approach. A main theoretical result is that the estimation of VTTV is derived mathematically independently of which measure that is chosen for the quantification of TTV.

    • Today transport system is subject to delays and disturbances, which has impacts on the transport chain itself and on the recipients of the goods. These effects influence the investment and planning decisions made by governments and infrastructure authorities. These authorities traditionally rely on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) as an input to their decisions. By performing CBA calculations they can base their decisions on a solid and comparable foundation. However, CBA is dependent on correct and up-to-date input data, but little success has been reached in determining the effects of disturbances. Largely, this is due to the complex and context depend nature of disturbances and thereby obvious difficulties in estimating the effects. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of disturbances in freight transport by reviewing and classifying the effects occurring due to transport time variability (TTV) and to suggest a calculation model to mathematically estimate the value of transport time variability (VTTV). The calculation method is tested in a case study for a large Swedish retail company. An extensive literature review has been performed on the existing methods to measure TTV and VTTV. Except identifying the measures used in the studies, any discussions in the studies on which measure to use has also been analysed. Effects of delays are further analysed and mapped in an activity framework of Transport, Transhipment, Delivery, Use of goods and Overall chain effects. Based on this mapping, four main types of disturbances are identified based on Magnitude and Frequency, followed by a suggestion on how these disturbances should be managed in a VTTV perspective. A method has also been developed to mathematically estimate VTTV for freight, extending previous studies on VTTV for passenger transport based on the scheduling utility approach and linked to the previous defined framework of four main types of disturbances. The study has resulted in an improved understanding of the effects of disturbances in freight transport networks through the developed framework. Further, a mathematical method for estimating VTTV has been developed. The model contains is a two-step cost function with a fixed and variable part. The method have successfully been tested on a test data set and proven to be able to estimate VTTV. Furthermore, this study has found that the estimation of VTTV can be (and is) derived mathematically independently of which measure that is chosen for the quantification of TTV.

  • Analyzing animal waste-to-energy supply chains: The case of horse manure
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 129, s. 830-837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To reduce human impact upon the environment, a transition from fossil to renewable energy sources such as biomass is imperative. Biomass from animal waste such as horse manure has unutilized potential as it has yet to be implemented at a large scale as an energy source. Research has demonstrated the technical feasibility of using animal waste for energy conversion, though their supply chain cost poses a barrier, as does a gap in research regarding the specific design of efficient horse manure-to-energy supply chains. In response, we investigated the design of horse manure-to-energy supply chains through interviews and site visits at stables, as well as through interviews with transport companies. Our findings show that horse manure-to-energy supply chains have distinct attributes at all stages of the supply chain such as the geographical spread of stables that determines supply chain design and hampers efficiency. They share several such attributes with forest biomass-to-energy supply chains, from which important needs can be identified, including the industrial development of trucks dedicated to the purpose, mathematical modeling to handle the trade-off of cost of substance loss in storage and cost of transport, and business models that reconcile the conflicting goals of different actors along the supply chains. • Information Flows Supporting Hinterland Transport: Applications in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Dryport Conference, Edinburgh, 21-22 October.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses how information and communication technology (ICT) is used to support hinterland transport of maritime containers. The focus is on how information is conveyed between actors using an ICT facility structure and how integrative information is used by different partners’ information systems for making the different transport operations more efficient and enabling an improved service offer. The analysis includes identification of the actor network and the management components in line with supply chain management (SCM) perspectives. To support this analysis a conceptual model showing the relationship between the integrative information and integrative technology was constructed and related to business process and an ICT maturity model found in the literature. Interviews have been conducted with actors involved in Swedish hinterland rail transport. The information flows have been mapped and the analysis shows that the current level of integration and ICT maturity is fairly low, but that several actors currently are modernising their systems. Their main motivation is to reduce the administrative tasks, rather than achieving a supply chain integration. The article shows that a proper handling of the information flow opens up for new business models and can make existing models more efficient. The ICT system must support the proper integration of the ocean, seaport and hinterland parts of the transport chain as well as auxiliary services.

It focuses on the way information is conveyed between actors using an ICT facility structure, and how integrative information is used by different partners’ information systems to make different transport operations more efficient and to offer improved service. The analysis includes the identification of the actor network and the management components in line with supply chain management perspectives. To support this analysis, a conceptual model showing the relationship between integrative information and integrative technology was constructed and related to business processes and an ICT maturity model found in the literature. Interviews were conducted with actors involved in Swedish hinterland rail transport. The information flows were mapped and the analysis shows that while the current level of integration and ICT maturity is fairly low, several actors are currently modernising their systems. Their main motivation is to reduce the administrative task load, and at the same time achieve better supply chain integration. The actors are focused on their own tasks and do not see the advantages of advanced integration of the information flows. The risk is identified that the IT level is increasing faster than business integration processes between the companies, which might lead to inefficiencies.

  • Autonomous last-mile delivery robots: a literature review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Transport Research Review. - 1867-0717 .- 1866-8887. ; 16:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This literature review investigates how self-driving autonomous delivery robots (ADRs) impact last-mile deliveries, add value to the logistics and transport industry, and contribute to creating competitive business models. Autonomous vehicles are still a developing technology and ADRs could possibly be one of the solutions to the last-mile problem, in particular in cities and for urban freight with an increasing number of parcels to deliver. Last-mile delivery is also changing as e-commerce and more demanding customers emerge. Such development, however, faces challenges regarding infrastructure, externalities such as CO2 emissions, and shorter delivery-time requirements. This review, focused on ADRs, reveals four major themes (operations, infrastructure, regulations, and acceptance) through which we explain the barriers and benefits of using ADRs for last-mile deliveries. The review shows that the operations of ADRs can impact last-mile deliveries by lowering costs, optimising the use of time, and reducing externalities. The review also shows that the foundation of last-mile infrastructure would have to change if ADRs are to be used to a greater extent. Regulations for ADRs are still not yet in place, which makes the market somewhat confused. The acceptance of ADRs in society is another challenge because the innovation of ADRs is still new and unfamiliar. Altogether, the use of ADRs for last-mile deliveries shows great potential, based on the promising results of the articles reviewed. However, most studies on ADRs have been theoretical in nature, such as models, which highlights the need for real-world case studies and implementations.
