  • Longitudinal and Transverse-Momentum Distributions of Li-9 Fragments from Break-up of Li-11
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 347:3-4, s. 198-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions of Li-9 fragments from Li-11 break-up reactions in C, Al and Pb targets have been measured at 280 MeV/u. The two-neutron removal cross-section was measured to be sigma(-2n), = 0.26 +/- 0.02 b for the carbon target, sigma(-2n) = 0.47 +/- 0.08 b for the aluminum target and sigma(-2n), = 1.9 +/- 0.4 b for the lead target. No significant difference is observed between the narrow widths (FWHM approximate to 47 MeV/c) of the transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions of the Li-9 fragments. The physical implications of this are discussed.

  • Testing the Use of Advanced Upper Limb Prostheses: Towards Quantifying the Movement Quality with Inertial-Magnetic Measurement Units
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Prosthesis. - : MDPI AG. - 2673-1592. ; 5:1, s. 264-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A thorough assessment of upper limb prostheses could help facilitate their transfer from scientific developments into the daily lives of users. Ideally, routine clinical testing would include assessments of upper limb function using motion-capturing technology. This is particularly relevant for the state-of-the-art upper limb prostheses. Methods: We designed a test based on an activity of daily life (“tray-task”) which could be completed outside the laboratory, and developed a set of outcome measures aimed at characterizing the movement quality. For this purpose, kinematics of the thorax and the humerus were captured with an inertial–magnetic measurement unit (IMMU) motion-capture system. Six prosthesis users and ten able-bodied participants were recruited to test the feasibility of the proposed assessment procedure and to evaluate the outcome variables. Results: All participants completed the test either at home or in our lab. The prosthesis users needed more time to complete the task and showed a larger range of motion in the thoracic flexion and a smaller range of motion in the humeral elevation, compared to the able-bodied participants. Furthermore, the prosthesis users’ movements were less smooth and characterized by less stable coordination patterns between the humerus and thorax. Conclusion: A new test method and associated outcome variables have been proposed.

  • Global Brassicaceae phylogeny based on filtering of 1,000-gene dataset
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Current Biology. - : Elsevier. - 0960-9822 .- 1879-0445. ; 33:19, s. 4052-4068
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mustard family (Brassicaceae) is a scientifically and economically important family, containing the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and numerous crop species that feed billions worldwide. Despite its relevance, most phylogenetic trees of the family are incompletely sampled and often contain poorly supported branches. Here, we present the most complete Brassicaceae genus-level family phylogenies to date (Bras-sicaceae Tree of Life or BrassiToL) based on nuclear (1,081 genes, 319 of the 349 genera; 57 of the 58 tribes) and plastome (60 genes, 265 genera; all tribes) data. We found cytonuclear discordance between the two, which is likely a result of rampant hybridization among closely and more distantly related lineages. To eval-uate the impact of such hybridization on the nuclear phylogeny reconstruction, we performed five different gene sampling routines, which increasingly removed putatively paralog genes. Our cleaned subset of 297 genes revealed high support for the tribes, whereas support for the main lineages (supertribes) was moder-ate. Calibration based on the 20 most clock-like nuclear genes suggests a late Eocene to late Oligocene origin of the family. Finally, our results strongly support a recently published new family classification, dividing the family into two subfamilies (one with five supertribes), together representing 58 tribes. This includes five recently described or re-established tribes, including Arabidopsideae, a monogeneric tribe accommodating Arabidopsis without any close relatives. With a worldwide community of thousands of researchers working on Brassicaceae and its diverse members, our new genus-level family phylogeny will be an indispensable tool for studies on biodiversity and plant biology.

  • CRYRING@ESR: present status and future research
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The former storage ring CRYRING has been shipped from the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory in Stockholm to Darmstadt as a Swedish in-kind contribution to FAIR. At its new location downstream of ESR all ion species presently accessible in ESR can be transferred to CRYRING, in which ions with rigidities between 1.44 and 0.054 Tm can be stored. The original Swedish layout has been modified by reconfiguring the sequence of straight sections and by slightly increasing the circumference to ESR/2. Ions can be injected from ESR or from an independent 300 keV/u RFQ test injector. The instrumentation of the ring includes an RF drift tube system for acceleration and deceleration (1 T s(-1), with a possibility for an upgrade to 7 T s(-1)), electron cooling, a free experimental section, and both fast and slow extraction of ions. We report on the present progress of this project, give a prospective timeline, and summarize the new research which will be enabled by this project. First beam for commissioning of the storage ring is expected for 2015, final bakeout to restore ultrahigh vacuum conditions in 2016 and ion beams injected through ESR in similar to 2017.

  • Analysis of Neural Network Based Proportional Myoelectric Hand Prosthesis Control
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ieee Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9294 .- 1558-2531. ; 69:7, s. 2283-2293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We show that state-of-the-art deep neural networks achieve superior results in regression-based multi-class proportional myoelectric hand prosthesis control than two common baseline approaches, and we analyze the neural network mapping to explain why this is the case. Methods: Feedforward neural networks and baseline systems are trained on an offline corpus of 11 able-bodied subjects and 4 prosthesis wearers, using the R-2 score as metric. Analysis is performed using diverse qualitative and quantitative approaches, followed by a rigorous evaluation. Results: Our best neural networks have at least three hidden layers with at least 128 neurons per layer; smaller architectures, as used by many prior studies, perform substantially worse. The key to good performance is to both optimally regress the target movement, and to suppress spurious movements. Due to the properties of the underlying data, this is impossible to achieve with linear methods, but can be attained with high exactness using sufficiently large neural networks. Conclusion: Neural networks perform significantly better than common linear approaches in the given task, in particular when sufficiently large architectures are used. This can be explained by salient properties of the underlying data, and by theoretical and experimental analysis of the neural network mapping. Significance: To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first one in the field which not only reports that large and deep neural networks are superior to existing architectures, but also explains this result.
