  • Mapping current curricular changes in European engineering education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Varietas delectat… Complexity is the new normality. - : European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI). - 9782873520182 ; , s. 1447-1457
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Europe, there is a wide variety of curriculum designs in higher engineering education. Several international networks serve the goal of supporting the inherent need of higher education institutions to continuously improve their programmes, without per se offering a formal accreditation standard. In this paper, two such networks are considered: CDIO and SEFI. The curricular landscape across Europe and across the different engineering disciplines is mapped by means of a survey amongst the members of CDIO and SEFI. The results amongst 82 respondents show that the prevailing curriculum structure defined by focus, set-up and design is a fixed curriculum with flexible elements, focused on theory with skills woven in, and with a subject-centred curriculum, followed by another big group having a flexible curriculum with fixed elements, competency-based, and focusing on skills with theory woven in. Configurations vary based on region, engineering discipline and network membership. Curricular changes in the past three years and coming two years focus mostly on assessment and examination, as well as pedagogics, interpersonal skills and curriculum flexibility. Certain engineering disciplines are more prone to curriculum change than others, such as Design Engineering and Information Engineering. Electric engineering currently shows significantly less curriculum change. When changing the curriculum design, learning goals, learning activities and learning vision are typically seen as a priority in engineering education. The most perceived barriers in the curriculum change process are staff competency and engagement for those about to make changes, and development time and costs for those having made recent changes.

  • Measuring Pregnancy Planning and the Effect of Childhood Abuse on Reproductive Health
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP) and the Swedish Pregnancy Planning Scale (SPPS) are two measurements of pregnancy planning. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and childhood abuse are stressful events that have been suggested to have both short- and long-term effects.Study I investigated the psychometric properties of the LMUP and the SPPS and compared their assessments. Questionnaire data from 2,314 pregnant women showed medium-high construct validity and high test-retest reliability for both measurements. The convergent validity of LMUP was low. The assessments of the LMUP and the SPPS corresponded substantially.Study II explored how the SPPS was interpreted and what women considered when responding to it. Twenty-five pregnant women were interviewed. Women responding to the SPPS took into account their life situation, intentions, desires, timing, actions to prepare for, or avoid, pregnancy, having discussed becoming pregnant with their partner, and reactions after learning of the pregnancy.Study III analysed the association between ACEs and pregnancy-related pain. Pregnant women (n = 142) responded to questionnaires in early and late pregnancy, respectively, and reported their pain intensities and pain distributions. Greater exposure to ACEs was associated with higher pain distribution and women exposed to ACEs reported higher worst pain intensities compared to non-exposed.Study IV investigated effects of childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse on pregnancy planning. The effect of a potential collider-stratification bias were also studied. Questionnaire data from 76,197 pregnant Norwegian women showed separate but no joint effects of the categories on having an unplanned pregnancy and a collider-stratification bias could not explain the effects. The LMUP and the SPPS measure somewhat different aspects of pregnancy planning and there is a substantial agreement between their assessments. Both the LMUP and the SPPS showed good validity and test-retest reliability. However, the LMUP would likely benefit from item reduction and the SPPS poorly captures any health-related changes made in and the preconception period. The results suggest that childhood abuse and ACEs have an effect on pregnancy planning and pregnancy-related pain. The findings suggest that preventing child abuse could have a positive effect on later reproductive health.

  • Naming the unmentionable: How children exposed to intimate partner violence articulate their experiences
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Violence. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0885-7482 .- 1573-2851. ; 26:2, s. 117-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Witnessing intimate partner violence (IPV) is a frightening experience that affects children’s development and well-being. This study examines experiences of IPV from the perspective of children. Interviews with 14 children between 8 and 12 years old were analyzed using a thematic method. Three main themes were identified: how children talked about abuse of their mother, described their own actions, and related to or handled memories of violence. Most children confirmed that their mother had been the victim of abuse, but had difficulties describing these experiences. Narratives were often incoherent and difficult to fully understand. In contrast, most of the children seemed to find it easier to describe their own actions during violence and conflicts. Not thinking about IPV was a strategy that aimed at reducing unwanted memories; it is also a strategy that may obstruct creating a narrative.

  • Current trends in nursing informatics : Results of an international survey
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics. - : IOS Press. - 9781614996576 ; , s. 938-939
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nursing informatics (NI) can help provide effective and safe healthcare. This study aimed to describe current research trends in NI. In the summer 2015, the IMIA-NI Students Working Group created and distributed an online international survey of the current NI trends. A total of 402 responses were submitted from 44 countries. We identified a top five NI research areas: standardized terminologies, mobile health, clinical decision support, patient safety and big data research. NI research funding was considered to be difficult to acquire by the respondents. Overall, current NI research on education, clinical practice, administration and theory is still scarce, with theory being the least common. Further research is needed to explain the impact of these trends and the needs from clinical practice. © 2016 IMIA and IOS Press.
