  • What Do Agile Teams Find Important for Their Success?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Asia-Pacific Software Engineering Conference, APSEC. - 1530-1362. ; 2018-December, s. 474-483
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the general benefits of agile methods have been shown, it is not always clear what makes the application of agile successful or not in a company. With this motivation, we investigate agile success factors, particularly from the viewpoint of teams. We conduct in-company surveys to collect and rank agile team success factors, comparing these results with success factors found in the literature. Our results introduce new success factors not previously discussed in related work. The findings emphasize the importance of team environment, team spirit, and team capability as opposed to previous work which emphasizes project management process and customer involvement. These findings can help find issues and improve the performance of agile teams.

  • Operationalizing Machine Learning Using Requirements-Grounded MLOps
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. ; 14588 LNCS, s. 231-248
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [Context & Motivation] Machine learning (ML) use has increased significantly, [Question/Problem] however, organizations still struggle with operationalizing ML. [Principle results] In this paper, we explore the intersection between machine learning operations (MLOps) and Requirements engineering (RE) by investigating the current problems and best practices associated with developing an MLOps process. The goal is to create an artifact that would guide MLOps implementation from an RE perspective, aiming for a more systematic approach to managing ML models in production by identifying and documenting the goals and objectives. The study adopted a Design Science Research methodology, examining the difficulties currently faced in creating an MLOps process, identified potential solutions to these difficulties, and assessed the effectiveness of one particular solution, an artifact containing guiding Requirements Questions sorted by ML stages and practitioner roles. [Contribution] By establishing a more thorough understanding of how the two domains interact and by offering practical guidance for implementing MLOps processes from an RE perspective, this study advances both the MLOps and RE fields.

  • Effects of automated competency evaluation on software engineers' emotions and motivation: A case study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: SEmotion '18 Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Emotion Awareness in Software Engineering. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 0270-5257. - 9781450357517
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 ACM. Software development consulting companies must be able to select the best suited developers for their clients. A method of doing this is through competence evaluation. Sigma IT Consulting uses manual methods consisting of heavy documentation for employees to fill in their competence. Problems such as data inconsistencies in documentation of competency might cause difficulties for managers while making decisions to assign right developer to the right job. Such difficulties may lead to frustration in managers and negatively affect their decision-making process. Similarly, developers might feel themselves under pressure always having to fill in the competency documents whenever the manager makes requests among all the tasks the developers are busy with and feeling under pressure might have negative effects on developers' performance. Researchers have shown that negative emotions lead to poor software development performance, while positive emotions improve developers' performance. Competency evaluation is an integral part of the daily routine at Sigma IT Consulting. Therefore, negative effects of competency sheets on developers and managers cannot be tolerated. In this case study, having investigated how competency is evaluated at Sigma IT and what employees think about competency evaluation in general, we implemented a web-based competency evaluation platform. When supplemented with qualitative data, the results of the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) we conducted show that automation of competency evaluation as a web-based platform has positive effects on developers' and managers' emotions and motivations. Interviews we conducted with developers and managers also include their positive thoughts about automation of the competency evaluation.

  • Comparing Word-Based and AST-Based Models for Design Pattern Recognition
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. ; , s. 44-48
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design patterns (DPs) provide reusable and general solutions for frequently encountered problems. Patterns are important to maintain the structure and quality of software products, in particular in large and distributed systems like automotive software. Modern language models (like Code2Vec or Word2Vec) indicate a deep understanding of programs, which has been shown to help in such tasks as program repair or program comprehension, and therefore show promise for DPR in industrial contexts. The models are trained in a self-supervised manner, using a large unlabelled code base, which allows them to quantify such abstract concepts as programming styles, coding guidelines, and, to some extent, the semantics of programs. This study demonstrates how two language models-Code2Vec and Word2Vec, trained on two public automotive repositories, can show the separation of programs containing specific DPs. The results show that the Code2Vec and Word2Vec produce average F1-scores of 0.781 and 0.690 on open-source Java programs, showing promise for DPR in practice.

  • The Effects of Native Language on Requirements Quality
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 18th Conference on Computer Science and Intelligence Systems, FedCSIS 2023.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [Context and motivation] More and more often software development projects involve participants of diverse nationalities and languages. Thus, software companies tend to use English as their business language. Moreover, to better prepare for future jobs, students consciously choose university courses in English. [Question/problem] As a result there is an increasing number of software engineers who are working or studying in a language which is not their native language. The question arises whether native language has an effect on the quality of natural language requirements. [Principal ideas/results] From the analysis of the requirements formulated by 44 participants of our empirical study, it follows that native language may have a negative effect on requirements quality, e.g., ambiguity, variability, and grammar issues. Furthermore, different native languages might drive to different quality issues. [Contribution] In order to prevent quality issues, our findings might be used by educators to adjust their materials to cater to different language groups, while practitioners might use them to improve their requirements review process.

  • Challenges of Aligning Requirements Engineering and System Testing in Large-Scale Agile: A Multiple Case Study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 25th International Requirements Engineering Conference Workshops (REW), 4-8 Sept. 2017, Lisbon, Portugal. - : IEEE. - 9781538634882
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: As agile methods become more pervasive, agile practices are applied to more large-scale systems with a scope that goes beyond pure software. The expansion of agile in these contexts provides benefits, but creates new challenges. Widespread use of agile has changed the way we must think about practices both in Requirements Engineering (RE) and in System Testing (ST). Our experience shows that many challenges in the application of large-scale agile development relate to either RE or ST, and in particular to the alignment between these areas. In this paper we present large-scale agile-related challenges from a multiple case study which relate to REST alignment. We map our challenges to an existing framework for REST alignment, and make an initial attempt to suggest agile RE practices from the literature which may alleviate these challenges. Our results show that the interviewed companies need to first adopt more agile RE practices to enhance REST alignment and then leverage agile testing. Future work will look more towards evaluating these best practices.

  • From RE cares to SE cares: Software engineering for social good, one venue at a time
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ICSE-SEIS '20: Proceedings of the ACM/IEEE 42nd International Conference on Software Engineering: Software Engineering in Society. - 0270-5257.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2020 Association for Computing Machinery. As software practitioners, we can help society by using our communities of experts to address a software need of a socially-conscious organization. Doing so can benefit society in the locale of a software engineering conference, and provides access to international experts for local organizations which may otherwise not have access. Furthermore, established Software Engineering (SE) researchers as well as practitioners and students have the opportunity for a unique learning experience. In this paper, we argue that the SE community should use SE conferences as the focal points for activities that benefit society at the locations of the conferences, and make such activities an integral, valued, and recognized part of the conference programs. The proposed series of events, termed SE Cares, can follow and learn from the model of Requirements Engineering (RE) Cares events that took place in 2018 and 2019, and can be a co-located event at all interested SE-related conferences.
