  • A substellar companion to Pleiades HII 3441
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264 .- 2053-051X. ; 68:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We find a new substellar companion to the Pleiades member star, Pleiades HII 3441, using the Subaru telescope with adaptive optics. The discovery is made as part of the high-contrast imaging survey to search for planetary-mass and substellar companions in the Pleiades and young moving groups. The companion has a projected separation of 0.'' 49 +/- 0.'' 02 (66 +/- 2 au) and a mass of 68 +/- 5 M-J based on three observations in the J-, H-, and K-s-bands. The spectral type is estimated to be M7 (similar to 2700 K), and thus no methane absorption is detected in the H band. Our Pleiades observations result in the detection of two substellar companions including one previously reported among 20 observed Pleiades stars, and indicate that the fraction of substellar companions in the Pleiades is about 10.0(-8.8)(+26.1)%. This is consistent with multiplicity studies of both the Pleiades stars and other open clusters.

  • CD47 promotes neuronal development through Src- and FRG/Vav2-mediated activation of Rac and Cdc42.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neuroscience. - 1529-2401. ; 26:48, s. 12397-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of axons and dendrites is controlled by small GTP-binding proteins of the Rho family, but the upstream signaling mechanisms responsible for such regulation remain unclear. We have now investigated the role of the transmembrane protein cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) in this process with hippocampal neurons. CD47-deficient neurons manifested markedly impaired development of dendrites and axons, whereas overexpression of CD47 promoted such development. Interaction of SH2 domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase substrate-1 (SHPS-1) with CD47 also induced the formation of dendritic filopodia and spines. These effects of CD47 were prevented by inhibition of either cell division cycle 42 (Cdc42) or Rac. In CD47-deficient neurons, autophosphorylation of Src was markedly reduced. In addition, overexpression of CD47 promoted the autophosphorylation of Src. Inhibition of Src family kinases indeed prevented CD47-promoted dendritic development. Inhibition of either FGD1-related Cdc42-guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) (FRG) or Vav2, which is a GEF for Cdc42 and Rac and is activated by Src, also prevented the effects of CD47 on dendritic development. These results indicate that CD47 promotes development of dendrites and axons in hippocampal neurons in a manner dependent, at least in part, on activation of Cdc42 and Rac mediated by Src as well as by FRG and Vav2.

  • HIGH-CONTRAST IMAGING OF INTERMEDIATE-MASS GIANTS WITH LONG-TERM RADIAL VELOCITY TRENDS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 825:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A radial velocity (RV) survey for intermediate-mass giants has been in operation for over a decade at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO). The OAO survey has revealed that some giants show long-term linear RV accelerations (RV trends), indicating the presence of outer companions. Direct-imaging observations can help clarify what objects generate these RV trends. We present the results of high-contrast imaging observations of six intermediate-mass giants with long-term RV trends using the Subaru Telescope and HiCIAO camera. We detected co-moving companions to gamma Hya B (0.61(-0.14)(+0.12)M(circle dot)), HD 5608 B (0.10 +/- 0.01M(circle dot)), and HD 109272 B (0.28 +/- 0.06M(circle dot)). For the remaining targets (iota Dra, 18 Del, and HD 14067), we exclude companions more massive than 30-60 M-Jup at projected separations of 1 ''-7 ''. We examine whether these directly imaged companions or unidentified long-period companions can account for the RV trends observed around the six giants. We find that the Kozai mechanism can explain the high eccentricity of the inner planets iota Dra b, HD 5608 b, and HD 14067 b.

  • Lifestyle management of hypertension : International Society of Hypertension position paper endorsed by the World Hypertension League and European Society of Hypertension
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hypertension. - : Wolters Kluwer. - 0263-6352 .- 1473-5598. ; 42:1, s. 23-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hypertension, defined as persistently elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) >140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at least 90 mmHg (International Society of Hypertension guidelines), affects over 1.5 billion people worldwide. Hypertension is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events (e.g. coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke) and death. An international panel of experts convened by the International Society of Hypertension College of Experts compiled lifestyle management recommendations as first-line strategy to prevent and control hypertension in adulthood. We also recommend that lifestyle changes be continued even when blood pressure-lowering medications are prescribed. Specific recommendations based on literature evidence are summarized with advice to start these measures early in life, including maintaining a healthy body weight, increased levels of different types of physical activity, healthy eating and drinking, avoidance and cessation of smoking and alcohol use, management of stress and sleep levels. We also discuss the relevance of specific approaches including consumption of sodium, potassium, sugar, fibre, coffee, tea, intermittent fasting as well as integrated strategies to implement these recommendations using, for example, behaviour change-related technologies and digital tools.

  • Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS) : Survey strategy
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nippon Tenmon Gakkai obun kenkyu hokoku. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264. ; 66:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • lThe Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS) is a high-cadence optical wide-field supernova (SN) survey. The primary goal of the survey is to catch the very early light of a SN, during the shock breakout phase. Detection of SN shock breakouts combined with multi-band photometry obtained with other facilities would provide detailed physical information on the progenitor stars of SNe. The survey is performed using a 2 degrees.2 x 2 degrees.2 field-of-view instrument on the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt telescope, the Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC). We take a 3-min exposure in g-band once every hour in our survey, reaching magnitude g similar to 20-21. About 100 nights of telescope time per year have been spent on the survey since 2012 April. The number of the shock breakout detections is estimated to be of the order of 1 during our three-year project. This paper summarizes the KISS project including the KWFC observing setup, the survey strategy, the data reduction system, and CBET-reported SNe discovered so far by KISS.

  • OISTER optical and near-infrared monitoring observations of peculiar radio-loud active galactic nucleus SDSSJ110006.07+442144.3
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nippon Tenmon Gakkai obun kenkyu hokoku. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264. ; 69:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present monitoring campaign observations at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 0.840, SDSSJ110006.07+442144.3 (hereafter, J1100+4421), which was identified during a flare phase in late 2014 February. The campaigns consist of three intensive observing runs from the discovery to 2015 March, mostly within the scheme of the OISTER collaboration. Optical-NIR light curves and simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are obtained. Our measurements show the strongest brightening in 2015 March. We found that the optical-NIR SEDs of J1100+4421 show an almost steady shape despite the large and rapid intranight variability. This constant SED shape is confirmed to extend to similar to 5 mu m in the observed frame using the archival WISE data. Given the lack of absorption lines and the steep power-law spectrum of alpha(upsilon) similar to -1.4, where f(v) proportional to v(alpha upsilon), synchrotron radiation by a relativistic jet with no or small contributions from the host galaxy and the accretion disk seemsmost plausible as an optical-NIR emission mechanism. The steep optical-NIR spectral shape and the large amplitude of variability are consistent with this object being a low.peak jet-dominated AGN. In addition, sub-arcsecond resolution optical imaging data taken with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam does not show a clear extended component and the spatial scales are significantly smaller than the large extensions detected at radio wavelengths. The optical spectrum of a possible faint companion galaxy does not show any emission lines at the same redshift, and hence a merging hypothesis for this AGN-related activity is not supported by our observations.

  • Addressing global disparities in blood pressure control : perspectives of the International Society of Hypertension
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cardiovascular Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0008-6363 .- 1755-3245. ; 119:2, s. 381-409
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Raised blood pressure (BP) is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Yet, its global prevalence is increasing, and it remains poorly detected, treated, and controlled in both high- and low-resource settings. From the perspective of members of the International Society of Hypertension based in all regions, we reflect on the past, present, and future of hypertension care, highlighting key challenges and opportunities, which are often region-specific. We report that most countries failed to show sufficient improvements in BP control rates over the past three decades, with greater improvements mainly seen in some high-income countries, also reflected in substantial reductions in the burden of cardiovascular disease and deaths. Globally, there are significant inequities and disparities based on resources, sociodemographic environment, and race with subsequent disproportionate hypertension-related outcomes. Additional unique challenges in specific regions include conflict, wars, migration, unemployment, rapid urbanization, extremely limited funding, pollution, COVID-19-related restrictions and inequalities, obesity, and excessive salt and alcohol intake. Immediate action is needed to address suboptimal hypertension care and related disparities on a global scale. We propose a Global Hypertension Care Taskforce including multiple stakeholders and societies to identify and implement actions in reducing inequities, addressing social, commercial, and environmental determinants, and strengthening health systems implement a well-designed customized quality-of-care improvement framework.

  • DISCOVERY OF DRAMATIC OPTICAL VARIABILITY IN SDSS J1100+4421 : A PECULIAR RADIO-LOUD NARROW-LINE SEYFERT 1 GALAXY?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 793:2, s. L26-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present our discovery of dramatic variability in SDSS J1100+4421 by the high-cadence transient survey Kiso Supernova Survey. The source brightened in the optical by at least a factor of three within about half a day. Spectroscopic observations suggest that this object is likely a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) at z = 0.840, however, with unusually strong narrow emission lines. The estimated black hole mass of similar to 10(7) M-circle dot implies bolometric nuclear luminosity close to the Eddington limit. SDSS J1100+4421 is also extremely radio-loud, with a radio loudness parameter of R similar or equal to 4 x 10(2)-3 x 10(3), which implies the presence of relativistic jets. Rapid and large-amplitude optical variability of the target, reminiscent of that found in a few radio- and gamma-ray-loud NLS1s, is therefore produced most likely in a blazar-like core. The 1.4 GHz radio image of the source shows an extended structure with a linear size of about 100 kpc. If SDSS J1100+4421 is a genuine NLS1, as suggested here, this radio structure would then be the largest ever discovered in this type of active galaxies.
