  • The technological work of standing in
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The narrative of the Western modernity is a story about technological progress where technology gradually has replaced humans in the world of work. Yet, the relationship between technology and humans is more complex than that. This is illustrated by Jeff Bezos’ idea of “Artificial Artificial Intelligence,” where humans are hired as stand-ins when automatized systems fail. Much has been said about what it is that AI does – or will do – to society and culture. How AI is done is, however, often obscured by the imaginaries of automatization and autonomous systems. Yet, there are indications that it takes an army of clickworkers to make machines seem smart. The platform work of the gig economy in general shows similar characteristics: digitalization does not mean that technology provides us with all we need; it provides us with apps that mediate work tasks to low paid food couriers on bikes, uber drivers or baby sitters. An observation to make here is that these gig workers do not have a human as a boss; algorithms (integrated into the platform infrastructure) work as stands-ins for the manager.

  • All-seeing eyes : metaphors of surveillance in the media monitoring industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Northern Lights. - : Intellect. - 1601-829X .- 2040-0586. ; 16:1, s. 23-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to analyse and compare how technologies of media monitoring have been imagined as seeing devices at two turning points in media history – around 1900 and in the 2000s. The press-cutting agencies that were established during the late nineteenth century, depending on human eyes and scissors, were said to deliver customized news updates, business data and information on public opinion. As seeing devices, they took names such as Argus, Observer and Atlas. These agencies made it possible to see the world on paper. Today, media monitoring depends on automatic processes rather than human eyes. Yet, digital technologies are usually represented by images of old media devices such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, telescopes and watchtowers. These well-known and transparent technologies make the black boxes of digital media seem less strange, but they might also mask the assumptions and complexities that are built into them.

  • Deskbound Cultures : Media and Materialities at Work
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book presents new perspectives on changing ideals and practices surrounding desks and desk work in offices, homes, and in popular culture. The authors represent a broad range of interests and disciplines: business administration, cultural studies, library and information science, literary studies, media and communication studies, media history, and social work. They have all been encouraged to ask new questions about familiar contexts and topics: What is the role of the desk in the daily lives of social workers? What difference does it make that most traders on the financial markets have moved from trading floors to desks where movements and transactions are visible on screens? Why are so many talk show hosts sitting behind desks? And what happens when the desks are left for other arrangements?
