  • Faint objects in motion: the new frontier of high precision astrometry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 51:3, s. 845-886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sky survey telescopes and powerful targeted telescopes play complementary roles in astronomy. In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the James Webb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. The goal of this White Paper is to address the fundamental science questions that are at stake when we focus on the motions of faint sky objects and to briefly review instrumentation and mission profiles.

  • Accelerated biodegradation of FeMn porous alloy coated with ZnO: Effect on cytocompatibility and antibiofilm properties
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Surface and Coatings Technology. - 0257-8972. ; 471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe-based alloys are being studied as potential candidates for biodegradable implants; however, their degradation rates remain too slow. To accelerate biodegradation while simultaneously hindering biofilm formation, a ZnO coating was deposited onto porous equiatomic FeMn alloy discs by sol-gel method using dip coating. The effect of the ZnO coating on the microstructure, biodegradability, cytocompatibility, and antibacterial properties were investigated. Biodegradability experiments were performed by immersing the specimens in Hank's balanced salt solution and measuring ion release after up to 28 days of immersion. The experiments showed an increased degradation of the FeMn/ZnO sample due to Fe segregation towards the grain boundaries, formation of iron-manganese oxide, and limited formation of degradation products on ZnO. Further, indirect Saos-2 cell cytotoxicity testing in 24 h sample-conditioned media showed no significant cytotoxicity in concentrations equal to or below 50 %. In addition, the total biofilm biovolume formed by Staphylococcus aureus on the FeMn/ZnO surface was significantly reduced compared to the uncoated FeMn. Taken together, these results show that the ZnO coating on FeMn improves the degradation rate, maintains cytocompatibility, and reduces biofilm accumulation when compared to an uncoated FeMn alloy.

  • Biodegradable porous FeMn(-xAg) alloys: assessment of cytocompatibility, mechanical, magnetic and antibiofilm properties
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2633-5409. ; 4:2, s. 616-630
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, porous FeMn(-xAg) alloys are fabricated through powder metallurgy methods. The effects of porosity and Ag addition on the microstructure, biodegradability, magnetic and mechanical properties of the alloys are investigated. Studies on the cytocompatibility, inflammatory cytokine response and antibacterial effect are also conducted. The fabricated alloys exhibit a macro- and nanoporous structure, with uniformly distributed silver particles. The biodegradability tests reveal that the release of Mn to the Hank's solution is higher than that of Fe, without significant differences between the alloys. The degradation products consist mainly of Fe, Mn, O and compounds enriched in Ca, P and Cl. As-sintered alloys show a low saturation magnetization value (below 1 emu g−1), which does not increase significantly with immersion time. The results on biocompatibility indicate that all tested alloys are non-cytotoxic, but the addition of Ag might interfere with cell proliferation. However, the ions released by the FeMn(-xAg) alloys do not induce an inflammatory response in macrophages. The obtained results on microbiological interactions reveal that although no significant bactericidal effect is observed at 4 h between FeMn control and FeMn-5Ag, a significant reduction in the total biofilm biomass of both live and dead bacteria is observed after 24 h in Ag containing FeMn-5Ag surfaces.

  • APOE -ε4 modulates the association between regional amyloid deposition and cognitive performance in cognitively unimpaired middle-aged individuals
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EJNMMI Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2191-219X. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To determine whether the APOE-ε4 allele modulates the relationship between regional β-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation and cognitive change in middle-aged cognitively unimpaired (CU) participants. Methods: The 352 CU participants (mean aged 61.1 [4.7] years) included completed two cognitive assessments (average interval 3.34 years), underwent [18F]flutemetamol Aβ positron emission tomography (PET), T1w magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as APOE genotyping. Global and regional Aβ PET positivity was assessed across five regions-of-interest by visual reading (VR) and regional Centiloids. Linear regression models were developed to examine the interaction between regional and global Aβ PET positivity and APOE-ε4 status on longitudinal cognitive change assessed with the Preclinical Alzheimer’s Cognitive Composite (PACC), episodic memory, and executive function, after controlling for age, sex, education, cognitive baseline scores, and hippocampal volume. Results: In total, 57 participants (16.2%) were VR+ of whom 41 (71.9%) were APOE-ε4 carriers. No significant APOE-ε4*global Aβ PET interactions were associated with cognitive change for any cognitive test. However, APOE-ε4 carriers who were VR+ in temporal areas (n = 19 [9.81%], p = 0.04) and in the striatum (n = 8 [4.14%], p = 0.01) exhibited a higher decline in the PACC. The temporal areas findings were replicated when regional PET positivity was determined with Centiloid values. Regionally, VR+ in the striatum was associated with higher memory decline. As for executive function, interactions between APOE-ε4 and regional VR+ were found in temporal and parietal regions, and in the striatum. Conclusion: CU APOE-ε4 carriers with a positive Aβ PET VR in regions known to accumulate amyloid at later stages of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) continuum exhibited a steeper cognitive decline. This work supports the contention that regional VR of Aβ PET might convey prognostic information about future cognitive decline in individuals at higher risk of developing AD. • Impacts of atmospheric chlor-alkali factory emissions in surrounding populations
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Environment International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-4120 .- 1873-6750. ; 65, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental exposures need to be assessed for the understanding of the health risks of general population. Organochlorine compounds (OCs) from chlor-alkali plants (CAPs) are significant for the exposomes of individuals living in locations receiving their emissions and have to be determined. The aims of the study are to identify the area of influence of past and present OC emissions from CAPs and to set quantitative body burden estimates. A CAP situated in a rural area was selected for study. The geographic distribution of the atmospheric emissions was monitored using olive tree leaves. Human biomonitoring was assessed by serum analysis from general population (n = 1340). DC concentrations followed exponential decay functions with maxima in the immediate vicinity of the factory. The individuals living within 1 km exhibited hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and DDT-DDE (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) concentrations that were 12, 1.3-1.9 and 3.9 times higher than in sites not influenced by the emissions from this factory. Individuals from municipalities situated 15-25 km away from the CAP showed 1.5, 12-1.4 and 1.3 times higher serum HCB. PCB and DDT concentrations than in distant sites. The high serum concentrations of DDT and PCBs were observed even 23-31 years and 9-17 years after manufacture completion of these compounds, respectively. Our methodology provides a way for assessment of the influence of past and present atmospheric OCs emissions from CAPs into the exposome of individuals living in nearby areas.

  • All-sky visible and near infrared space astrometry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 51:3, s. 783-843
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The era of all-sky space astrometry began with the Hipparcos mission in 1989 and provided the first very accurate catalogue of apparent magnitudes, positions, parallaxes and proper motions of 120 000 bright stars at the milliarcsec (or milliarcsec per year) accuracy level. Hipparcos has now been superseded by the results of the Gaia mission. The second Gaia data release contained astrometric data for almost 1.7 billion sources with tens of microarcsec (or microarcsec per year) accuracy in a vast volume of the Milky Way and future data releases will further improve on this. Gaia has just completed its nominal 5-year mission (July 2019), but is expected to continue in operations for an extended period of an additional 5 years through to mid 2024. Its final catalogue to be released ∼ 2027, will provide astrometry for ∼ 2 billion sources, with astrometric precisions reaching 10 microarcsec. Why is accurate astrometry so important? The answer is that it provides fundamental data which underpin much of modern observational astronomy as will be detailed in this White Paper. All-sky visible and Near-InfraRed (NIR) astrometry with a wavelength cutoff in the K-band is not just focused on a single or small number of key science cases. Instead, it is extremely broad, answering key science questions in nearly every branch of astronomy while also providing a dense and accurate visible-NIR reference frame needed for future astronomy facilities.
