  • Is RFID the solution to inventory problems in the retail supply chain?
  • 2007. - 1
  • Ingår i: Beyond Mobility. - Lund : Studentlitteratur AB. - 9144049285 - 9789144049281
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The book's title metaphor "Beyond Mobility" brings forth a number of questions and potential deve-lopments for the future. Mobile telephony has evolved beyond voice communication and on to further services, such as basic Internet access, mail, and mobile TV. It is however still unclear what value this development creates, and for whom. There is reason to talk about a new phase, bound to encompass a far more complex set of market situations. The technological changes are undisputable, but what markets are being collapsed or expanded are still very much under debate. The new wireless world looks bound to provide an ever-increasing number of different market offerings, rather than services delivered solely over one specific kind of telecom network. A situation has arisen similar to the pattern for physical transportation where the use of cars, buses, trains, and airplanes often combine. The sixteen chapters in this book aim to give a comprehensive view of Mobility and Value, based on extensive empirical studies as well as on the application of theoretical tools and the develop-ment of those tools. There seems to be a need for new, dynamic business models and value creating constellations of firms, adaptable to ever-changing technologies and markets. The concept of mobility is clearly more than just a fancy word for mobiles. Rather, it is an intriguing umbrella concept embracing the complexities of a new economic landscape. The connection between mobility and value is dynamic; it is inherently unstable.

  • Technology as an extension of the human body : Exploring the potential role of technology in an elderly home care setting
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present thesis explores the potential role and implications of technology in elderly care from the users’ perspective. This exploration is undertaken in terms of five empirical studies of a telehealth project and a meta-analysis of their contributions. An important insight emerging from this work is the need to rethink the human subject as a body, rather than as a mere mind using technology. The thesis draws on phenomenology to reconceptualize the user of technology, and on this basis, to theorize about the potential role and implications of technology in care. It concludes that, in combination with humans that integrate technology with their other sensory and emotional capacities, technology can produce affect. The findings indicate that technology can contribute to senior citizens feeling safe, cared for and thereby less isolated. The findings further demonstrate that, because of the perceptual capacity gained from technology, the care workers become aware of new health problems that urgently call for their sensory and emotional responsiveness. On this ground, the thesis challenges the determinist view that technology threatens the essentially ‘human’ aspect; rather, it concludes that feeling and other bodily resources are fundamental in the use of technology. Indeed, technology activates such ‘human’ capabilities.Hence, technology plays a role as a complement for rather than as a replacement of care workers. It increases their work burden by informing them about new needs. This may improve care quality but at an increased cost, which is relevant from a practical perspective. At a more general level, the thesis challenges the dualist legacies in mainstream management research that have sought to divorce mind form body, nature from culture and reason from emotion. It can therefore contribute to broader theoretical developments and fuel existing debates beyond the care setting.

  • Does local competition make a difference for store profitability? : An empirical study of 168 Swedish supermarkets
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Much of what we know about the effects of competition on store performance emanate from SCP studies of grocery retail stores located in different geographical markets. These studies have provided empirical support for the notion that low competition endows firms with market power, enabling them to set higher prices compared to firms located in more competitive markets. However, to what extent the effect of competition on prices translates into higher gross margins and higher profits and profitability on the store level appears to be an unanswered question. One reason being that valid and reliable data on the profitability of individual stores never or very seldom are disclosed for research by retail companies. This study takes previous empirical research on the effects of local competition in retailing one step further, by investigating the relationships between competition and various aspects of economic performance of 168 supermarkets, all owned and managed by individual retailers affiliated to the voluntary ICA chain in Sweden. A unique database has been created by pooling data from income statements and balance sheets with details on local competition. Local competition is depicted in three dimensions: concentration, horizontal vs. intertype competition, and spatial monopoly. The main contribution of this study is that it establishes an empirical relationship between competition and bottom-line economic performance. The results show that competition has a significant effect on conduct and financial performance. In more competitive markets, supermarkets price lower, conduct “more” on non-price attributes, and achieve lower profitability compared to stores facing little competition. This study thus validates the SCP-paradigm and it explicitly shows that market power opportunities on the local market level is translated into higher profitability performance of stores. As such, the study has important implications for competition authorities’ actions as well as for retail management decisions.

I rapportens senare dels ställs hushållens egna mål i förgrunden.

  • Consumers’ store-level price knowledge : Why are some consumers more knowledgeable than others?
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Retailing. - : Elsevier Inc. - 1873-3271 .- 0022-4359. ; 81:4, s. 319-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What consumers know or think they know about stores’ relative price levels is an important research area from both a societal as well as a retail perspective. This study investigates the determinants of objective as well as subjective store-price knowledge. Using structural equation modeling, the effects of price consciousness, income, education, and three forms of price-related experience on the two knowledge dimensions, as well as the relationship between objective and subjective knowledge, are tested. Whereas out-of-store price search had positive effects on both subjective and objective price knowledge, the two other types of experience, number of stores shopped, and length of residence in the market only affected objective price knowledge, indicating that the two knowledge dimensions are determined differently. Furthermore, price consciousness had a larger effect on subjective than on objective knowledge. Finally, subjective and objective store-price knowledge were not significantly related in this study.

  • Measuring consideration sets through recall or recognition : a comparative study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services. - : Elsevier. - 1873-1384 .- 0969-6989. ; 11, s. 321-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Marketing researchers have studied consideration sets for a long time and many different operationalizations of this concept have been used. This empirical study, with 670 households, compares two widely used operationalizations, recognition-based and recall-based measures of consideration sets. The results indicate several differences between the measures. The recognition-based measure produces larger sets than the recall-based measure. However, some strong brands are found to be included more often with the recall-based measure. Further, the recognition-based measure generates increased price sensitivity as well as reduced loyalty as compared to a recall-based measure.
