  • The school lighting innovation dilemma
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 1099. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a qualitative descriptive case study that aims to build awareness about the need for improvement of the indoor environment in classrooms and to exemplify how renewal-oriented processes can be initiated. The study focuses on innovation processes that have resulted in both completely new designs and further spread of innovative solutions. The reason for the need to improve is that too many pupils and students have problems with concentration, relaxation and recuperation. The number of diagnoses such as Autism and ADHD is growing. One factor which significantly influences the pupil's mental well-being is the daily physical environment. The single aspect which may be improved in reasonable time, at a reasonable cost, is the lighting design of classrooms. An underlying reason for the habit to continue installing insipid uniform static "light-carpets" is the lack of awareness about how lighting affects wellbeing and health. As with innovation in other industries, it is an innovation dilemma that the vast majority of the people who sell and procure classroom lighting tend to prefer the established solutions that they are used to. The article describes how Malmö's early investment in Human Centric Lighting and the unique indoor environment of the Study hall in the Centre for Economic Sciences at Uppsala University are used as role models for lighting design in classrooms. The case study combines the authors' own observations and earlier interviews with users. Malmö's temporal light variation and parts of the Study hall's lighting design are used in more than 30 classrooms, in Malmö, Stockholm Business School and Iggesund. The article concludes with suggestions on how today's lighting design knowledge and technology can be combined to provide more advanced adaptations to the varying lighting needs of pupils, students and teachers.

  • DNA digestion and formation of DNA-network structures with Holliday junction-resolving enzyme Hjc_15-6 in conjunction with polymerase reactions
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biotechnology. - 1873-4863.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recently identified novel Holliday junction-resolving enzyme, termed Hjc_15-6, activity investigation results imply DNA cleavage by Hjc_15-6 in a manner that potentially enhances the molecular self-assembly that may be exploited for creating DNA-networks and nanostructures. The study also demonstrates Pwo DNA polymerase acting in combination with Hjc_15-6 capability to produce large amounts of DNA that transforms into large DNA-network structures even without DNA template and primers. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that Hjc_15-6 prefers Holliday junction oligonucleotides as compared to Y-shaped oligonucleotides as well as efficiently cleaves typical branched products from isothermal DNA amplification of both linear and circular DNA templates amplified by phi29-like DNA polymerase. The assembly of large DNA network structures was observed in real time, by transmission electron microscopy, on negative stained grids that were freshly prepared, and also on the same grids after incubation for 4 days under constant cooling. Hence, Hjc_15-6 is a promising molecular tool for efficient production of various DNA origamis that may be implemented for a wide range of applications such as within medical biomaterials, catalytic materials, molecular devices and biosensors.

  • Education for sustainability as a transformative learning process : a pedagogical experiment in EcoDesign doctoral education
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 14:15-16, s. 1431-1442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents details about a doctoral-level EcoDesign course, as an education for sustainable development experience, in relation to pedagogic theory. The aim was to promote transformative learning in order to facilitate more productive use of environmental knowledge in product and business development. The course included interdisciplinary dialogue founded in real world experiences presented by lecturers from business, government and NGOs, as well as study visits and group work on the drafting of journal papers. The key pedagogical objective was to widen the perspective to embrace more humanly engaging concerns and to enhance the student's overall understanding about relations between sustainable development priorities and product design practices. @ 2005 Elsevier Ltd. • A new understanding of au-assisted growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley. - 1616-3028 .- 1616-301X. ; 15:10, s. 1603-1610
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor nanowires of III-V materials have generated much interest in recent years. However, the growth mechanisms by which these structures form are not well understood. The so-called vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism has often been proposed for III-V systems, with a chemically inert, liquid metal particle (typically Au) acting as a physical catalyst. We assert here that An is, in fact, not inert with respect to the semiconductor material but rather interacts with it to form a variety of intermetallic compounds. Moreover, we suggest that III-V nanowire growth can best be understood if the metallic particle is not a liquid, but a solid-phase solution or compound containing An and the group III material. The four materials GaP, GaAs, InP, and InAs will be considered, and growth behavior related to their particular temperature-dependent interaction with Au.
