- Allergen extracts have been used for diagnosis and treatment of allergy for around 100 years. During the second half of 20th century, the notion increasingly gained foothold that accurate standardization of such extracts is of great importance for improvement of their quality. As a consequence, manufacturers have implemented extensive protocols for standardization and quality control. These protocols have overall IgE-binding potencies as their focus. Unfortunately, each company is using their own in-house reference materials and their own unique units to express potencies. This does not facilitate comparison of different products. During the last decades, most major allergens of relevant allergen sources have been identified and it has been established that effective immunotherapy requires certain minimum quantities of these allergens to be present in the administered maintenance dose. Therefore, the idea developed to introduce major allergens measurements into standardization protocols. Such protocols based on mass units of major allergen, quantify the active ingredients of the treatment and will at the same time allow comparison of competitor products. In 2001, an EU funded project, the CREATE project, was started to support introduction of major allergen based standardization. The aim of the project was to evaluate the use of recombinant allergens as reference materials and of ELISA assays for major allergen measurements. This paper gives an overview of the achievements of the CREATE project.

- Meltwater drainage beneath ice sheets is a fundamental consideration for understanding ice–bed conditions and bed-modulated ice flow, with potential impacts on terminus behavior and ice-shelf mass balance. While contemporary observations reveal the presence of basal water movement in the subglacial environment and inferred styles of drainage, the geological record of former ice sheets, including sediments and landforms on land and the seafloor, aids in understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of efficient and inefficient drainage systems and their impact on ice-sheet behavior. We highlight the past decade of advances in geological studies that focus on providing process-based information on subglacial hydrology of ice sheets, how these studies inform theory, numerical models and contemporary observations, and address the needs for future research.

- Background: In the health care settings in which nurses work, involvement in some form of conflict is inevitable. The ability to manage conflicts is therefore necessary for nursing students to learn during their education. Method: A qualitative analysis of 43 written group assignments was undertaken using a content analysis approach. Results: Three main categories emerged in the analysis-to approach and integrate with the theoretical content, to step back and get an overview, and to concretize and practicetogether with the overall theme, to learn by oscillating between closeness and distance. Conclusion: Learning about conflict and conflict management through drama enables nursing students to form new knowledge by oscillating between closeness and distance, to engage in both the fictional world and the real world at the same time. This helps students to form a personal understanding of theoretical concepts and a readiness about how to manage future conflicts.

- Aim The aim of the study is to describe nurses' experiences of working with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases related to smoking in Indonesia. Methods A phenomenographic approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses in health care centers and hospitals in Yogyakarta. The interviews were analysed according to Alexandersson's model. Results Three themes emerged from the analysis: Conceptions in relation to the patient and their family, conceptions in relation to the hospital and health care centers and conceptions in relation to the culture and policies. All nurses are working with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases related to smoking in one way or another. However, distinct guidelines and resources are missing. The nurses also mentioned the need of training in smoking cessation to better work with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases with a focus on smoking. Conclusion The difficulties rise from lack of resources in the health care facilities, the patients' lack of motivation and weak policies from the government. For the situation to be improved the nurses need guidelines, training and more time to work with health promotion and prevention. What this study adds: Nurses stated that guidelines are not available to work with health promotion and smoking cessation in Indonesia. Nurses in Indonesia state they need training or retraining regarding the subject to be able to give good and proper education in tobacco cessation for cardiovascular ill patients. Smoking is considered a tradition in Indonesia and the environment is not supportive for the ones who want to quit. Even though, involving the family shows to be a successful method for smoking cessation. The implications of this paper: Provide training in smoking cessation and in communication for Indonesian nurses to feel more secure when motivating the patients to quit smoking. Establish specific guidelines to help and support the nurses in their work with cardiovascular diseases related to smoking. Involving family is a successful approach that nurses can use in their work with smoking cessation which other studies also indicated.

The aim of this study was to identify terms and expressions indicating patients’ need for knowledge and understanding, as well as nurses’ teaching interventions, as documented in nursing records. Background. Previous international studies have shown that nursing documentation is often deficient in terms of recording patient teaching. Methods. Patient records (N = 35) were collected in a general medical ward in a hospital in Sweden. The data contain 206 days of nursing documentation. The records were analysed with regard to content and structure. Terms and expressions indicating patients’ need for knowledge and understanding and terms and expressions indicating nurses’ teaching activities were analysed. Results. The results showed that patients’ need for knowledge is implicitly indicated by conceptions and experiences as well as questions. Furthermore, nurses’ implicit teaching interventions consist of information, motivating conversations, explanations, instructions and setting expectations. However, the content and structure of the pedagogical activities in the patient records are fragmented and vague. Relevance to clinical practice. Efforts must be directed towards elaborating upon the above-mentioned terms and expressions as indications of patients’ need for knowledge and nurses’ teaching interventions. Moreover, these terms and expressions must be recognized and acknowledged.
