  • Attitudes towards Sustainable Development. Priorities, Responsibility, Empowerment
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The UN conference in Rio on Environment and Development in 1992 was the starting point for the local Agenda 21 work and several Swedish municipalities began their local Agenda 21 processes in 1993. This thesis aims at investigating how people perceive sustainable development in four Swedish municipalities. What is important and who is responsible? Individual influence and strategies for implementation, feelings of empowerment as well as the connection between personality and environmental concern, were analysed. Based on the Agenda 21 document, 20 statements including social, environmental and participation-/implementation issues, were developed. 160 persons (politicians, officials, environmental representatives and the public) were interviewed in four municipalities in the south east of Sweden. The respondents were asked to sort the statements according to the importance to family, municipality and world, and to the responsibility of the individual, local politicians and governments, EU and UN. The results showed that sustainable development issues were experienced as more important to the world than to the municipality or to the family, and that people felt worried and anxious when they were facing global problems. Most important were clean air, protecting fresh water, and health. What was important to the family was also perceived as important to the world however the connection to issues important in the municipalities was much less pronounced. The responsibility for sustainable development was mostly allocated to governments and global organizations, whereas the individual responsibility was perceived as low. Although the municipalities used information, education and local projects in order to increase the awareness, the public felt less individual responsibility and less influence than the other groups. Environmental concern was investigated among childcare personnel, who perceived their influence on environmental issues to be small. Still they felt that their actions would be meaningful if only they were provided with a scope of action and the possibility to influence. To increase the feelings of empowerment and improve the understanding of the global situation, more international co-operation projects on the local level are suggested. It is important to make local problems visible and explain the connection to global issues. If people were to perceive more control the prerequisites for treating problems in a constructively way might increase considerably.

  • Uppsala Underdogs - A Robot Soccer Project
  • 2006
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe the four-legged soccer team Uppsala Underdogs developed by a group of 4th year computer science students at Uppsala University during the fall of 2004. The project is based on the experience from two similar previous projects. This year the emphasis of the project has been on distribution of data and on support for evaluation and reconfiguration of strategies. To support data distribution, a middleware has been developed, which implements a replication algorithm and provides a clean interface for the other software modules (or behaviors). To enable easy reconfiguration of strategies, an automata-based graphical description language has been developed, which can be compiled into code that uses the database and the lower level modules, such as tactics and positioning, to make decisions and control the robot. In addition, a graphical simulator has been developed in which the strategies can be evaluated.

  • Conjoint analysis as a tool for communication and corporate environmental decision-making
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Conjoint analysis has been used extensively in marketing, transportation and healthcare for the past 50 years. Since the mid-1990s, it has also been applied to an increasing number of environmental issues. In this thesis, conjoint analysis is applied to environmental objectives of the Swedish steel industry. The aim of the research project has been to develop a method for eliciting stakeholder preferences for environmental issues and to present the results to the stakeholders through the multivariate data analysis method of partial least squares regression. This licentiate thesis is based on three studies: a literature review of all conjoint studies conducted on environmental issues, a pilot study in which a new method was developed, and a main study where this method was tested on four environmental objectives of the Swedish steel industry. Up to the present, 109 environmental conjoint studies have been carried out. Recently, studies in environ¬mental economy have dominated, with investigators trying to estimate a mone¬tary value on environmental values or products. The problem selection has varied widely, from ecosystem management and green products to waste and risk management. One trend among environmental conjoint studies has been to use conjoint methods that report results at a group level. In the pilot study here, conjoint analysis was combined with partial least squares regression to enable presentation of results at individual level. The benefit of individual-level results is that they can be used to initiate a dialogue between an industry and its stakeholders, as well as between different stakeholder groups. The presentation mode also allows the researcher to find segments of respondents that think alike, although perhaps from different groups. In the pilot study, cluster analysis was used successfully to find hidden segments among the respondents. In the main study, the method from the pilot study was used to elicit preferences for four environmental objectives of the Swedish steel industry: reduced use of non-renewable energy, reduced use of non-renewable resources, decreased emission of carbon dioxide and weight reduction of products. Six stakeholder groups participated in the study, and the results showed that decreased emission of carbon dioxide was the environmental objective that most participants prioritised highest. Lowest priority was given to weight reduction of products. Conjoint analysis combined with multivariate data analysis methods such as partial least squares regression, principal component analysis and cluster analysis has been verified as an effective method for eliciting stake¬holder preferences on industry-wide environmental issues.

  • School phobia with separation anxiety disorder: a comparative 20- to 29-year follow-up study of 35 school refusers.
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Comprehensive Psychiatry. - 0010-440X. ; 38:1, s. 17-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outcome of school phobia after age 30 years was studied with the hypothesis that school phobia cases would have persisting psychiatric problems, but would function better than nonschool refusal psychiatric patients. The subjects consisted of three groups. Thirty-five individuals treated for school phobia at ages 7 to 12 years were compared with age- and sex-matched nonschool refusal child psychiatric patients (n = 35) and a sample from the general population (n = 35). School phobia cases had had more psychiatric consultation, lived with their parents more often than the general population group, and had fewer children than both comparison groups. The nonschool refusal child psychiatric patients had poorer psychosocial adjustment and higher rates of criminal offenses. The implications of the findings are discussed.

  • Microbes as Engines of Ecosystem Function : When Does Community Structure Enhance Predictions of Ecosystem Processes?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Microbiology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-302X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microorganisms are vital in mediating the earth's biogeochemical cycles; yet, despite our rapidly increasing ability to explore complex environmental microbial communities, the relationship between microbial community structure and ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. Here, we address a fundamental and unanswered question in microbial ecology: 'When do we need to understand microbial community structure to accurately predict function?' We present a statistical analysis investigating the value of environmental data and microbial community structure independently and in combination for explaining rates of carbon and nitrogen cycling processes within 82 global datasets. Environmental variables were the strongest predictors of process rates but left 44% of variation unexplained on average, suggesting the potential for microbial data to increase model accuracy. Although only 29% of our datasets were significantly improved by adding information on microbial community structure, we observed improvement in models of processes mediated by narrow phylogenetic guilds via functional gene data, and conversely, improvement in models of facultative microbial processes via community diversity metrics. Our results also suggest that microbial diversity can strengthen predictions of respiration rates beyond microbial biomass parameters, as 53% of models were improved by incorporating both sets of predictors compared to 35% by microbial biomass alone. Our analysis represents the first comprehensive analysis of research examining links between microbial community structure and ecosystem function. Taken together, our results indicate that a greater understanding of microbial communities informed by ecological principles may enhance our ability to predict ecosystem process rates relative to assessments based on environmental variables and microbial physiology.

  • Translation and linguistic validation of the Swedish Recovering Quality of Life (ReQoL) : a brief research report
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-0640. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In research and among clinicians, the focus has shifted from mainly symptom reduction and increasing functionality to a more recovery-oriented focus. Although there are instruments measuring recovery, there has been a lack of instruments sensitive enough to measure the quality of life for people with severe mental health disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain a Swedish version of the Recovering Quality of Life (ReQoL) questionnaire adhering to best practice guidelines using various steps of translation, linguistic validation, and cognitive debriefing. The cognitive debriefing was conducted with seven participants, and all felt the items in the questionnaire were relevant to their health, apprehensible, and easy to complete. However, some issues were raised regarding wording and the concepts behind certain items. All feedback was considered, and some items were revised in response to criticism after continuous discussions. A Swedish version of ReQoL now exists, and although there is a need for ReQoL in different clinical research settings in Sweden, further research is required to psychometrically test the construct validity as well as reliability of the Swedish version in Sweden.
