  • Black holes, gravitational waves and fundamental physics : a roadmap
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 36:14
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

  • Design, optimization and modelling of a chemical recovery system for wet spinning of cellulose in sodium carbonate solutions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cellulose. - : Springer. - 0969-0239 .- 1572-882X. ; 27, s. 8681-8693
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to present the design, optimization and modelling of a chemical recovery system for a novel CS2-free viscose-type process that entails dissolution of pre-treated dissolving pulp in a continuous-flow reactor in cold alkali and wet spinning of cellulose in sodium carbonate solutions. Technologies already known to other industries for the recovery and reuse of chemicals, such as causticizing, recalcination, recarbonization and freeze-separation, were used. Chemical equilibria simulations were performed with OLI Studio 9.5, with the purpose to select experimental conditions which avoid undesired precipitations in each unit operation. Synthetic solutions mimicking the spent coagulation liquor were used in the laboratorial experiments. The proposed chemical recovery system was shown to be technically feasible and reduce chemical make-ups to a minimum of 45 kg/ton of NaOH and 4 kg/ton of H2SO4. Small amounts of Zn are expected to precipitate during recarbonization of the coagulation liquor at 30 °C and causticizing at 98 °C. Thus, a filter for ZnO particles should be included in the design of the recarbonization unit and a continuous purge of lime mud and input of fresh lime make-up should be needed to keep burnt lime availability at an acceptable level. Overall, the results presented in this study portray a solution to reduce operating costs and the environmental impact of novel viscose-type processes with alkaline spin dopes and wet spinning of cellulose in sodium carbonate solutions. © 2020, The Author(s).

  • Perceptions of the appropriate response to norm violation in 57 societies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Research. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate. Little is known about peoples preferred responses to norm violations across countries. Here, in a study of 57 countries, the authors highlight cultural similarities and differences in peoples perception of the appropriateness of norm violations.

  • Comparing CrN and TiN Coatings for Accident-Tolerant Fuels in PWR and BWR Autoclaves
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Engineering. - : MDPI AG. - 2673-4362. ; 3:4, s. 321-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of coatings for accident-tolerant fuels (ATFs) for light water reactor (LWR) applications promises improved corrosion resistance under accident conditions and better performances during operation. CrN and TiN coatings are characterized by high wear resistance coupled with good corrosion resistance properties. They are generally used to protect materials in applications where extreme conditions are involved and represent promising candidates for ATF. Zr cladding tubes coated with 5 µm-thick CrN or TiN, exposed in an autoclave to simulated PWR chemistry and BWR chemistry, were characterized with SEM, EDS, and STEM. The investigation focused on the performance and oxidation mechanisms of the coated claddings under simulated reactor chemistry. Both coatings provided improved oxidation resistance in a simulated PWR environment, where passivating films of Cr2O3 and TiO2, less than 1 µm-thick, formed on the CrN and TiN outer surfaces, respectively. Under the more challenging BWR conditions, any formed Cr2O3 dissolved into the oxidizing water, resulting in the complete dissolution of the CrN coating. For the TiN coating, the formation of a stable TiO2 film was observed under BWR conditions, but the developed oxide film was unable to stop the flux of oxygen to the substrate, causing the oxidation of the substrate.

  • CrN–NbN nanolayered coatings for enhanced accident tolerant fuels in BWR
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - 0022-3115. ; 586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The accident tolerant fuel (ATF) concept has emerged in the years after the 2011 Fukushima accident as part of a renewed effort in research for light water reactors. The primary focus is to further improve safety measures under and beyond design basis accident conditions, and to improve fuel cladding performance in normal operation. The application of a coating on zirconium claddings can achieve both these aims without extensive changes to the reactor design. Metallic chromium coatings have been profusely studied as solution for pressurized water reactors, but the search for an effective ATF coating able to withstand the environment inside boiling water reactors (BWRs) is still ongoing. In this work, two different versions of a novel nitride coating composition were studied. Zirconium claddings coated with 8 µm thick layers of superlattice CrN–NbN and a nanolayered CrN–NbN were tested in autoclave under BWR operating conditions for 60 days. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and atom probe tomography were employed to characterize as-deposited and autoclaved samples of these two materials. During exposure, both coating versions formed a stable, dense and passivating oxide scale (200–300 nm thick) on the surface, demonstrating improved oxidation protection under operating conditions. Some differences in the oxide growth mechanism were observed between the superlattice and the nanolayered CrN–NbN coatings, which allowed to glimpse at the effect of the layer thickness on the oxidation protection provided by these coatings. The nano-structured morphology of both coatings remained unaffected by the autoclave test, but a 35 nm thick Zr-Cr-N phase was found at the coating-substrate interface of the superlattice CrN–NbN coated cladding.

  • Microbes as Engines of Ecosystem Function : When Does Community Structure Enhance Predictions of Ecosystem Processes?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Microbiology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-302X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microorganisms are vital in mediating the earth's biogeochemical cycles; yet, despite our rapidly increasing ability to explore complex environmental microbial communities, the relationship between microbial community structure and ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. Here, we address a fundamental and unanswered question in microbial ecology: 'When do we need to understand microbial community structure to accurately predict function?' We present a statistical analysis investigating the value of environmental data and microbial community structure independently and in combination for explaining rates of carbon and nitrogen cycling processes within 82 global datasets. Environmental variables were the strongest predictors of process rates but left 44% of variation unexplained on average, suggesting the potential for microbial data to increase model accuracy. Although only 29% of our datasets were significantly improved by adding information on microbial community structure, we observed improvement in models of processes mediated by narrow phylogenetic guilds via functional gene data, and conversely, improvement in models of facultative microbial processes via community diversity metrics. Our results also suggest that microbial diversity can strengthen predictions of respiration rates beyond microbial biomass parameters, as 53% of models were improved by incorporating both sets of predictors compared to 35% by microbial biomass alone. Our analysis represents the first comprehensive analysis of research examining links between microbial community structure and ecosystem function. Taken together, our results indicate that a greater understanding of microbial communities informed by ecological principles may enhance our ability to predict ecosystem process rates relative to assessments based on environmental variables and microbial physiology.

  • Pituitary Neoplasm Nomenclature Workshop: Does Adenoma Stand the Test of Time?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Endocrine Society. - : The Endocrine Society. - 2472-1972. ; 5:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The WHO Classification of Endocrine Tumours designates pituitary neoplasms as adenomas. A proposed nomenclature change to pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) has been met with concern by some stakeholder groups. The Pituitary Society coordinated the Pituitary Neoplasm Nomenclature (PANOMEN) workshop to address the topic. Experts in pituitary developmental biology, pathology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, and oncology, including representatives nominated by the Endocrine Society, European Society of Endocrinology, European Neuroendocrine Association, Growth Hormone Research Society, and International Society of Pituitary Surgeons. Clinical epidemiology, disease phenotype, management, and prognosis of pituitary adenomas differ from that of most NETs. The vast majority of pituitary adenomas are benign and do not adversely impact life expectancy. A nomenclature change to PitNET does not address the main challenge of prognostic prediction, assigns an uncertain malignancy designation to benign pituitary adenomas, and may adversely affect patients. Due to pandemic restrictions, the workshop was conducted virtually, with audiovisual lectures and written précis on each topic provided to all participants. Feedback was collated and summarized by Content Chairs and discussed during a virtual writing meeting moderated by Session Chairs, which yielded an evidence-based draft document sent to all participants for review and approval. There is not yet a case for adopting the PitNET nomenclature. The PANOMEN Workshop recommends that the term adenoma be retained and that the topic be revisited as new evidence on pituitary neoplasm biology emerges.

  • Behavioural economics for energy and climate change policies and the transition to a sustainable energy use — A Scandinavian perspective
  • 2019. - 1st
  • Ingår i: Energy and Behaviour : Towards a Low Carbon Future - Towards a Low Carbon Future. - 9780128185674 ; , s. 45-87
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Scandinavian region has been at the forefront of energy and environmental policies for decades. While significant effort has been devoted to the supply side and development of technology markets, our study questions the extent to which policy efforts have effectively and explicitly addressed behavioural factors affecting the adoption and the use of low-carbon energy technologies at the individual and household level. Building upon behavioural economics, we explore behavioural factors and the role of economic and noneconomic aspects affecting energy use and decarbonisation activities in the region. Overall, we argue that greater attention needs to be given to behavioural issues in policy design, implementation, and evaluation. At the same time, behavioural interventions are unlikely to be a panacea that can steer sustainable energy use by itself, and both price and nonprice interventions are required. We conclude that a more stringent, integrated behavioural and technological policymaking approach is needed.
