  • Multiscale in modelling and validation for solar photovoltaics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges.

  • Mo3Ni2N Nanoparticle Generation by Spark Discharge
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944. ; 16:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spark ablation is an advantageous method for the generation of metallic nanoparticles with defined particle sizes and compositions. The reaction of the metal particles with the carrier gas during the synthesis and, therefore, the incorporation of those light elements into structural voids or even compound formation was confirmed for hydrides and oxides but has only been suspected to occur for nitrides. In this study, dispersed nanoparticles of Mo3Ni2N and Mo with Janus morphology, and defined particle sizes were obtained by spark discharge generation as a result of carrier gas ionization and characterized using transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Metal nitrides possess beneficial catalytic and thermoelectric properties, as well as high hardness and wear resistance. Therefore, this method offers the possibility of controlled synthesis of materials which are interesting for numerous applications.

  • Analysis of strain and stacking faults in single nanowires using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) on Bragg reflections is a promising technique for the study of three-dimensional (3D) composition and strain fields in nanostructures, which can be recovered directly from the coherent diffraction data recorded on single objects. In this paper, we report results obtained for single homogeneous and heterogeneous nanowires with a diameter smaller than 100 nm, for which we used CDI to retrieve information about deformation and faults existing in these wires. We also discuss the influence of stacking faults, which can create artefacts during the reconstruction of the nanowire shape and deformation.

  • A green dry route for antibacterial nanofinishing of textiles
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the World Congress on New Technologies (NewTech 2015).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an aerosol-based process is proven for imparting antibacterial property to textiles. Nanoparticles of copper and silver are produced by means of glow discharge between two electrodes in nitrogen at atmospheric pressure and passed through fabrics of cotton and polyester which act as filter media. The bactericidal performance of the nanofinished fabrics is assessed against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gramnegative Klebsiella pneumonia bacteria. Nanoparticle loads of about 0.3 g/m2 (~ 0.2 wt %) give strong antibacterial activity to the fabrics regardless of particle composition and size. Higher loads do not enhance the bactericide property but affect the colour and hand feel of the fabrics. Cotton and polyester fabrics with low loads (<0.3 g/m2) of small silver nanoparticles (<10 nm) show different bactericidal behaviour. Polyester fabrics attain good antibacterial activity for SA and KP, which is retained (KP) or decreases (SA) after washing. Cotton fabrics show hardly bactericidal property but, in some cases, it increases after washing.

  • Emissions and exposures of graphene nanomaterials, titanium dioxide nanofibers, and nanoparticles during down-stream industrial handling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1559-064X .- 1559-0631. ; 31:4, s. 736-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, engineered nanomaterials are frequently used. Nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively used for many years and graphene is one type of emerging nanomaterial. Occupational airborne exposures to engineered nanomaterials are important to ensure safe workplaces and to extend the information needed for complete risk assessments. The main aim of this study was to characterize workplace emissions and exposure of graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) and nanoparticles (NPs) during down-stream industrial handling. Surface contaminations were also investigated to assess the potential for secondary inhalation exposures. In addition, a range of different sampling and aerosol monitoring methods were used and evaluated. The results showed that powder handling, regardless of handling graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, TiO2 NFs, or NPs, contributes to the highest particle emissions and exposures. However, the exposure levels were below suggested occupational exposure limits. It was also shown that a range of different methods can be used to selectively detect and quantify nanomaterials both in the air and as surface contaminations. However, to be able to make an accurate determination of which nanomaterial that has been emitted a combination of different methods, both offline and online, must be used.

  • Size-resolved characterization of particles >10 nm emitted to air during metal recycling
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environment International. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0160-4120 .- 1873-6750. ; 174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In the strive towards a circular economy, metal waste recycling is a growing industry. During the recycling process, particulate matter containing toxic and allergenic metals will be emitted to the air causing unintentional exposure to humans and environment. Objective: In this study detailed characterization of particle emissions and workplace exposures were performed, covering the full size range from 10 nm to 10 µm, during recycling of three different material flows: Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), metal scrap, and cables. Methods: Both direct-reading instruments (minute resolution), and time-integrated filter measurements for gravimetric and chemical analysis were used. Additionally, optical sensors were applied and evaluated for long-term online monitoring of air quality in industrial settings. Results: The highest concentrations, in all particle sizes, and with respect both to particle mass and number, were measured in the WEEE flow, followed by the metal scrap flow. The number fraction of nanoparticles was high for all material flows (0.66–0.86). The most abundant metals were Fe, Al, Zn, Pb and Cu. Other elements of toxicological interest were Mn, Ba and Co. Significance: The large fraction of nanoparticles, and the fact that their chemical composition deviate from that of the coarse particles, raises questions that needs to be further addressed including toxicological implications, both for humans and for the environment. © 2023 The Authors

  • Effect of the carrier gas on the structure and composition of Co–Ni bimetallic nanoparticles generated by spark ablation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aerosol Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-8502. ; 170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spark ablation is a versatile technique for producing pure size-selected nanoparticles. The carrier gas used in spark ablation affects the nanoparticles’ generation, crystalline structure, and chemical composition. The comprehension of this phenomenon can contribute to the design of nanoparticles with tailored properties. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of reducing (95%N2 + 5%H2), inert (N2), and oxidative (air) carrier gases in a spark ablation setup with Co–Ni alloyed electrodes. The agglomerates’ particle size distribution, morphology, structure, and composition were highly dependent on the carrier gas, especially its relative oxygen content. The agglomerates were then sintered into compacted particles. Three different crystalline structures and chemical compositions were observed with X-ray diffraction and confirmed with transmission electron microscopy for the compacted particles. For 95%N2 + 5%H2 and air, single-phase (Co,Ni) and (Co,Ni)O particles were identified, respectively, whereas for N2, two-phase (Co,Ni) and (Co,Ni)O particles were obtained. This work opens up new possibilities of tuning the structure and composition, i.e., distribution of metallic and oxide phases, of the produced particles and thus tailor their properties for specific applications by simply changing the carrier gas.

  • Direct Experimental Evidence for Photoinduced Strong-Coupling Polarons in Organolead Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 7:22, s. 4535-4539
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Echoing the roaring success of their bulk counterparts, nano-objects built from organolead halide perovskites (OLHP) present bright prospects for surpassing the performances of their conventional organic and inorganic analogues in photodriven technologies. Unraveling the photoinduced charge dynamics is essential for optimizing the optoelectronic functionalities. However, mapping the carrier-lattice interactions remains challenging, owing to their manifestations on multiple length scales and time scales. By correlating ultrafast time-resolved optical and X-ray absorption measurements, this work reveals the photoinduced formation of strong-coupling polarons in CH3NH3PbBr3 nanoparticles. Such polarons originate from the self-trapping of electrons in the Coulombic field caused by the displaced inorganic nuclei and the oriented organic cations. The transient structural change detected at the Pb L3 X-ray absorption edge is well-captured by a distortion with average bond elongation in the [PbBr6]2- motif. General implications for designing novel OLHP nanomaterials targeting the active utilization of these quasi-particles are outlined.

  • Correlating structure and electronic band-edge properties in organolead halide perovskites nanoparticles
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 18:22, s. 14933-14940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After having emerged as primary contenders in the race for highly efficient optoelectronics materials, organolead halide perovskites (OHLP) are now being investigated in the nanoscale regime as promising building blocks with unique properties. For example, unlike their bulk counterpart, quantum dots of OHLP are brightly luminescent, owing to large exciton binding energies that cannot be rationalized solely on the basis of quantum confinement. Here, we establish the direct correlation between the structure and the electronic band-edge properties of CH3NH3PbBr3 nanoparticles. Complementary structural and spectroscopic measurements probing long-range and local order reveal that lattice strain influences the nature of the valence band and modifies the subtle stereochemical activity of the Pb2+ lone-pair. More generally, this work demonstrates that the stereochemical activity of the lone-pair at the metal site is a specific physicochemical parameter coupled to composition, size and strain, which can be employed to engineer novel functionalities in OHLP nanomaterials.
