  • Social media within sustainable product development: an exploratory multiple case study on the perception of social media usability in the new product development process
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning. - 1740-2832 .- 1740-2840. ; 10:3/4, s. 273 - 293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media can be a useful tool in order to interact with customers and open up innovation efforts. Our case studies of firms aim to outline if, how and why social media is utilised in their product development processes. Our results show that the use of social media within product development is limited among our respondents, mainly due to limited resources in combination with a low amount of customers. The results show that a low number of customers impede the ability to realise the possible gains of using social media to facilitate communication among a large number of users. Additional challenges are perceived to be the difficulty in controlling content, measuring gains and dealing with security issues. There is no consensus among the respondents with regard to social media's perceived future potential within product development; some are quite hesitant, other companies anticipate increased potential in the future

  • Identifying actions driving and legitimizing radical innovations in a large firm A longitudinal study of the acceptance of a radical innovation in a Swedish incumbent forest firm
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: EURAM (European Academy of Management); 26-29 June 2013. - 9789758400355
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The core of this paper is to increase the understanding of firm selection processes of new innovation ideas that divert from the firm’s main activity: when exploring the process of developing a radical innovation within a firm. In a longitudinal study over 6 years, we follow an incumbent Swedish forest firm ́s effort in developing and commercializing a radical innovation. We find that when a radical idea lacks top management support, is not selected and the process of innovation is interrupted, lower level employees ́ action can have a defining impact on the selection and development of the idea towards commercialization. Emerging from our qualitative analysis we formalize these actions undertaken in a radical innovation process as actions of legitimacy. Applying institutional theory and the concept of legitimacy, we attempt to shed light on the firm process of selecting, developing and implementing radical ideas by proposing a grounded model. We open up the black box of actions of legitimacy, trace the effect of these actions on the selection, development and legitimacy of the radical innovation.

  • Hidden Champions: Strategies for Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises producing sports equipment to innovate and compete successfully on the world market
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Social Innovation For Competitiveness, Organisational Performance And Human Excellence. Proceedings of the European Academy of Management 12th Annual Meeting, Rotterdam: Rotterdam School of Management, ERASMUS University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the new global economy, there is no place for companies to hide from foreign competitors - all companies need to plan for growth and survival in a world of global competition. This research is focused on identifying the abilities and strategies of ‘Hidden Champions’ located in Sweden – with some of them producing sports equipment – to successfully innovative and compete in the world market. The results from this exploratory study indicate that their long-term success is rooted in their focused strategy with soft diversification, continuous innovation through close relationship with customers and employees, providing superior quality and customized services compared to their competitors and by not following management fads. Swedish hidden champions are not afraid of low price competitors from developing countries such as China and India, which is a challenge and threat for most of the companies in developed economies. Hidden champions across the industries investigated are successful due to their excellent innovation governance, and they posses many lessons for other companies for how to govern innovation.

  • The legitimation process of new innovation ideas in established firms: deconstructing the black box of actions enhancing legitimacy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Conference for Organisational Learning, Knowledge and Capabilities (OLKC).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a longitudinal real time case study over 14 months, we follow the process of radical innovation in an incumbent Swedish firm. Applying institutional theory and the concept of legitimacy, we try to shed new light on the firm process of developing and implementing radical ideas. We deconstruct the black box of individual actions undertaken in the process and trace the effect of these actions on the development and legitimacy for the radical idea. We find that when an idea lack top management support and the process of innovation are interrupted, lower level employees ́ action can have a defining impact of the survival. In the literature there is a perceived need for a consistent view on how to organize the bottom up processes of innovation within a firm. Emerging from the qualitative grounded analysis we thus formalize these actions undertaken in a radical innovation process.
