  • Prediction of water and wastewater networks rehabilitation based current age and material distribution
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology: Water Supply. - : IWA Publishing. - 1606-9749 .- 1607-0798. ; 13:2, s. 227-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ageing drinking water, stormwater and sewer pipe networks imply an increased degree of rehabilitation. The need for rehabilitation can be predicted using lifetime distribution functions together with current network age and material distribution. In Sweden, current age and material distribution is neither documented on a national level, nor for many water utilities on a local level. In this study, current network age and material distribution was provided through a questionnaire sent to Swedish water and wastewater utilities and the data provided were extrapolated to cover the whole of Sweden. The data were then combined with lifetime distribution functions to provide predictions. One limitation is that for newer materials the lifetime is still uncertain. Predictions were made for different scenarios to reflect local differences and the medium scenario shows that while the Swedish rehabilitation rate is stable, investments in monetary terms need to double in the next 60 years. The rehabilitation rate is also dependent on the extent to which the network is expanded. This method can be used to calculate national investment needs, and the results can also provide a basis for estimates for Swedish utilities with data scarcity.

  • Replacement predictions for drinking water networks through historical data
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Water Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1354 .- 1879-2448. ; 46:7, s. 2149-2158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetime distribution functions and current network age data can be combined to provide an assessment of the future replacement needs for drinking water distribution networks. Reliable lifetime predictions are limited by a lack of understanding of deterioration processes for different pipe materials under varied conditions. An alternative approach is the use of real historical data for replacement over an extended time series. In this paper, future replacement needs are predicted through historical data representing more than one hundred years of drinking water pipe replacement in Gothenburg, Sweden. The verified data fits well with commonly used lifetime distribution curves. Predictions for the future are discussed in the context of path dependence theory.

  • Performance of an in situ passive sampling system for metals in stormwater
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Monitoring. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1464-0333 .- 1464-0325. ; 4:2, s. 258-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A passive sampler has been developed and is demonstrated in situ for urban runoff. The passive sampler is compared to conventional composite (time-dependent and flow-weighted) bottle sampling during and between storm events. The sampling was carried out at established stormwater stations; before and after a stormwater detention pond. In situ deployment of the passive sampler provides the metal concentrations, corresponding to the electrochemically available fraction of total metal, for time-dependent samples collected in parallel. The sampler provides improved accuracy compared to bottle sampling because contamination during sample transport and handling is minimised. Laboratory handling is reduced by direct analysis of the accumulated metals on the receiving membrane by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Passive sampling also solves the problem of metal speciation change during transport to the laboratory, which is a potential problem for bottle samples. The low cost and convenience of the passive sampler and subsequent analysis should allow significantly more extensive spatial and temporal monitoring of metals in the aquatic environment than has previously been possible.

  • Building trust: the importance of democratic legitimacy in the formation of consumer attitudes toward drinking water
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Water Policy. - : IWA Publishing. - 1366-7017 .- 1996-9759. ; 21:1, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to explore the role of democratic decision legitimacy in the formation of consumer attitudes toward drinking water. Using consumer-level data on the decision to change the drinking water sources in two Swedish cities, three core sets of variables were constructed: (1) the overall democratic decision legitimacy, defined as the citizens' support for the decision; (2) the input, throughput and output dimensions of decision legitimacy, representing the citizens' perceived opportunity to provide input, their ability to oversee, as well as their level of satisfaction with the outcome of the decision-making process; and (3) consumer attitudes toward drinking water, comprising trust, risk perception and acceptance. The results of the study provide support for the proposed mechanism that consumers that perceive a decision-making process more positively also tend to support the ultimate decision more, which in turn helps to establish more positive consumer attitudes towards their drinking water. Consequently, democratic legitimacy is an important precursor for building trust. This is particularly important if a waterborne outbreak has negatively impacted consumers' trust in their water, and when political and engineering decisions must be made.

  • Restoring drinking water acceptance following a waterborne disease outbreak: the role of trust, risk perception, and communication
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Social Psychology. - : Wiley. - 1559-1816 .- 0021-9029. ; 43:9, s. 1761-1770
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although research shows that acceptance, trust, and risk perception are often related, little is known about the underlying patterns of causality among the three constructs. In the context of a waterborne disease outbreak, we explored via zero-order/partial correlation analysis whether acceptance predicts both trust and risk perception (associationist model), or whether trust influences risk perception and acceptance (causal chain model). The results supported the causal chain model suggesting a causal role for trust. A subsequent path analysis confirmed that the effect of trust on acceptance is fully mediated by risk perception. It also revealed that trust is positively predicted by prior institutional trust and communication with the public. Implications of the findings for response strategies to contamination events are discussed.

  • Use of hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry to determine the effects of hard ions, iron salts and humic substances on arsenic sorption to sorghum biomass
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Microchemical Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0026-265X. ; 81:1, s. 57-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At present, there is a great interest in studying new sorbent materials for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions because of its high toxicity and adverse effects on human health. In previous research, sorghum biomass was found to be an efficient and economic sorbent for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions. In this investigation, the effects of CaCl2, MgCl 2, FeSO4, MgSO4, Fe(NO3) 3, and humic substances (peat moss, humin and humic acids) on arsenic binding to sorghum biomass were evaluated. Among these compounds, only iron salts were found to positively increase the sorption of arsenic to sorghum biomass. In addition, the sorption equilibrium was reached faster when the reaction mixture contained iron salts. However, an overall reduction of 21% of arsenic sorption to sorghum biomass was observed in the presence of MgSO 4. This interference may be due to the presence of sulfate ions, instead of the hard cations, that could be in competition with As for the same interaction sites or ligands. Peat moss, humins and humic acid, extracted from sphagnum peat moss, significantly decreased the arsenic sorption to sorghum biomass.

  • Comparative tissue distribution of metals in birds in Sweden using ICP-MS and laser ablation ICP-MS
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0090-4341 .- 1432-0703. ; 47:2, s. 259-269
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cadmium, copper, lead, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and zinc profiles were investigated along feather shafts of raptor and other bird species by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The distribution of external versus internal metal contamination of feathers was investigated. The species examined were peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus), and house sparrow (Passer domesticus) in Sweden. For habitat comparisons, total Cu, Ph, Zn, and Cd concentrations were analyzed by ICP-MS in feathers of the examined species as well as captive peregrine falcon. For investigation of metal distribution and correlation in different biological materials of raptors, total concentrations of Cu, Pb, Cd, and Zn were also investigated by ICP-MS in feathers, eggs, blood, feces, liver, and kidney of wild peregrine falcon from southwestern Sweden. Laser ablation of feathers revealed that Pb contamination is both external and internal, Zn contamination is internal, and Cd and Cu contamination is predominantly internal, with a few externally attached particles of high concentration. Pb, Cu, and Cd signal intensities were highest in urban habitats and contamination was mainly external in feathers. The background signal intensity of Zn was also higher in birds from urban habitats. The laser ablation profile of PGE (Pt, Pd, Rh) demonstrated that PGE contamination of feathers consists almost exclusively of externally attached PGE-containing particles, with little evidence of internally deposited PGE. Generally, total metal concentrations in feathers were highest in sparrowhawk and house sparrow due to their urban habitat. Total Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations were highest in liver and kidney due to binding to metallothionein, while the total Pb concentration was highest in feces due to the high excretion rate of Pb. A decreasing temporal trend for Pb in feathers, showing that Pb levels in feathers have decreased since the introduction of nonleaded petrol, is also discussed.
