  • Introducing the CTA concept
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 43, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Rationale, design and baseline characteristics of the effect of ticagrelor on health outcomes in diabetes mellitus patients Intervention study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Clinical Cardiology. - : Wiley. - 0160-9289 .- 1932-8737. ; 42:5, s. 498-505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the setting of prior myocardial infarction, the oral antiplatelet ticagrelor added to aspirin reduced the risk of recurrent ischemic events, especially, in those with diabetes mellitus. Patients with stable coronary disease and diabetes are also at elevated risk and might benefit from dual antiplatelet therapy. The Effect of Ticagrelor on Health Outcomes in diabEtes Mellitus patients Intervention Study (THEMIS, NCT01991795) is a Phase 3b randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of ticagrelor vs placebo, on top of low dose aspirin. Patients >= 50 years with type 2 diabetes receiving anti-diabetic medications for at least 6 months with stable coronary artery disease as determined by a history of previous percutaneous coronary intervention, bypass grafting, or angiographic stenosis of >= 50% of at least one coronary artery were enrolled. Patients with known prior myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke were excluded. The primary efficacy endpoint is a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. The primary safety endpoint is Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction major bleeding. A total of 19 220 patients worldwide have been randomized and at least 1385 adjudicated primary efficacy endpoint events are expected to be available for analysis, with an expected average follow-up of 40 months (maximum 58 months). Most of the exposure is on a 60 mg twice daily dose, as the dose was lowered from 90 mg twice daily partway into the study. The results may revise the boundaries of efficacy for dual antiplatelet therapy and whether it has a role outside acute coronary syndromes, prior myocardial infarction, or percutaneous coronary intervention.

  • Clinical and genetic profile of patients enrolled in the Transthyretin Amyloidosis Outcomes Survey (THAOS) : 14-year update
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1750-1172. ; 17:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR amyloidosis) is a rare, life-threatening disease caused by the accumulation of variant or wild-type (ATTRwt amyloidosis) transthyretin amyloid fibrils in the heart, peripheral nerves, and other tissues and organs. Methods: Established in 2007, the Transthyretin Amyloidosis Outcomes Survey (THAOS) is the largest ongoing, global, longitudinal observational study of patients with ATTR amyloidosis, including both inherited and wild-type disease, and asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic TTR mutations. This descriptive analysis examines baseline characteristics of symptomatic patients and asymptomatic gene carriers enrolled in THAOS since its inception in 2007 (data cutoff: August 1, 2021).Results: This analysis included 3779 symptomatic patients and 1830 asymptomatic gene carriers. Symptomatic patients were predominantly male (71.4%) and had a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of symptom onset of 56.3 (17.8) years. Val30Met was the most common genotype in symptomatic patients in South America (80.9%), Europe (55.4%), and Asia (50.5%), and more patients had early- versus late-onset disease in these regions. The majority of symptomatic patients in North America (58.8%) had ATTRwt amyloidosis. The overall distribution of phenotypes in symptomatic patients was predominantly cardiac (40.7%), predominantly neurologic (40.1%), mixed (16.6%), and no phenotype (2.5%). In asymptomatic gene carriers, mean (SD) age at enrollment was 42.4 (15.7) years, 42.4% were male, and 73.2% carried the Val30Met mutation. Conclusions: This 14-year global overview of THAOS in over 5000 patients represents the largest analysis of ATTR amyloidosis to date and highlights the genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity of the disease.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00628745.

  • A venit timpul re-creaţiei, re-generãrii
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Steaua. - 0039-0852. ; 11-12, s. 36-38
  • Recension (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Margento's "computationally assembled" anthology (Raluca Tanasescu, Chris Tanasescu, Marius Surleac, Vaibhav Kesarwani, Diana Inkpen) has a bilingual title with different appearances: once "US" Poets Foreign Poets, then "New Poets". The first time is "foreign", the second time novelty. It is clear that the volume appearing at FrActalia Press in 2018 is a step further on the development of digital literature. As the anthologist in the Foreword says, "I was enraging and emitting", that is, a workshop-studio atmosphere, specific to Margento, always changing, convoluted. Creations are made from divagation and branching. The poem-graph expands "like Deleuzian fugue-lines". Deleuzian creation machines substitute computational algorithms and classifiers. Digital human sciences involve mathematics, computer science and the media. Interdisciplinarity is already flowing into transdisciplinarity.

  • Algoritmizarea ființelor
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astra. Literatură, arte şi idei. - 2069-1955. ; 9:3-4, s. 8-9
  • Recension (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "Homo deus: a short history of the future", Yuval Noah Harari's book discusses the sources of power of modern man, beginning especially after the Second World War. The starting approach is the Enlightenment-specific, glorifying progress and then follow optimistic conclusions for the future. The impression is of progressive euphoria, but it is true that sometimes the jubilation is suspended and the master of ceremonies expose the emperor's nakedness. The end is even panicky, imagining the script of data theft and the rise of demigod dictators who could set up regimes of terror without the possibility of rebellion. Therefore, the author concludes, market forces need to be carefully controlled.

  • Artistic symbols as support of a biased imagination
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Ars Aeterna. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1337-9291 .- 2450-8497. ; 7:1, s. 10-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ian McEwan has indulged in macabre plots whose point of interest resided in the power of imaginary over the allegedly rational reality. In novels like Atonement, Enduring Love, On Chesil Beach and Amsterdam he pointed out how approaching the world scientifically can be as misleading as doing it on the religious or literary ways. The target of my paper is to spot those common places of fanaticism and narrowed perspectives which have constituted the origin of many tragedies. The main line of demonstration follows epistemological researches: namely the catastrophic nature of an incomplete knowledge. The biased understanding of a phenomenon is a great temptation, as Karl Popper put it, because it relies on comfort and quick results that can lead to advantageous actions in a matter-of-fact order of things, but not otherwise. From the cultural studies point of view, Ian McEwan’s works can be understood as an ironical mixture of private with public and boredom with imagination. More often than not, what engenders a tragedy is the sheer boredom, the desire to live something significant. Such a conjured tragedy may be identified with a sluice facilitating the passage from postmodernism to post-post-modernism.

  • Canonicity, canon, canonizable and the implications of transcultural communication
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of “Ştefan cel Mare” University of Suceava Philosophy, Social and Human Disciplines Series. - 2069-4016. ; 1:1, s. 5-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Harold Bloom, in the Western Canon, selected only twenty-six sine qua non writers and, invoking Giambattista Vico’s New Science, where human history was distributed in three phases – Theocratic, Aristocratic, and Democratic – introduced another one, the Chaotic Age (represented by Freud, Proust, Joyce, and Kafka).1 Bloom did not expel this newly proposed Age, as it was also the container of beauty and strangeness, as Walter Pater desired for Romanticism. What has happened since 1994 to the status and condition of the canon? The article takes aim at describing the implications of the science of communication for the process of selecting values. At the same time, it follows the role played by various intercultural concepts in valuing cultural heritage and contemporary creations. The main purpose of the study is to configure the blueprint of an arch-canon founded on interdisciplinarity and the latest advances in different sciences, with a special touch on linguistics and discourse analysis.

  • Codul lui Eminescu : Titan, demon si geniu in opera poetica a lui M. Eminescu
  • 2010
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titan, Demon and Genius in the Poetical Work of Mihai Eminescu is a book that furthers on the interpretation of the most representative Eminescu’s poems and also of his lyrical theatre. Besides, a special chapter is dedicated to the cultural context of the second half of the 19th century and another one records the literary works inspired by Eminescu’s works and personality throughout the 20th century. The research is realized with comparative methods, strategy that involved tackling and solving numerous translation problems when parallels were drawn to American and English romanticist works.Structurally, the book is founded on a three-level approach. The main intention was to highlight the evolution of triad: the demon’s fury and revolt, mostly set among narcissistic coordinates, are re-valued with the titanic character in the fight for public welfare and for spiritual evolution of the human species. Contrary to those opinions that apprehended genius as a defeated, exhausted titan, I tried to demonstrate that this stage represents the climax in the intellectual ascension of Eminescu’s triadic character. The genius’s involvement is obvious in The Dramatic Dodecameron, where Eminescu shapes the matrix of a national mythology founded on Dacian and Muşatinic bases. The literary analyses are constantly supported by concepts and philosophical theories that intersected the writer’s encyclopaedic preoccupations. Of crucial importance was the relief given to Eminescu’s gnoseological connections with alchemy, theology, and with the diverse gnoses. All these influences and personal developments offer universal radiation to a creativity that moved from the exotic romanticism to the hyper-stylized baroque, and up to the ascetic and perfectly balanced classicism.

    • What Andrei Novac intends to restore is the poetry that could have written more to Romania if it had not dismantled by the communism which lasted 45 years. The technique resides in allegories, allusions, parodies, cryptic experiments (in the best cases, because it is pointless to mention the disastrous poetic manifestations). As the basic notion of the volume is responsible and sensitive freedom, we realize that what was forbidden before is now quite marginalized:

  • 2016. - I-VI

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The critical reception should not underestimate the readers, nor overestimate them, but approximate the correct intellectual level. We hear so often the pathetic slogan: "We are the elite"! During modernism, it was known who the elite was; in postmodernism, the elite was sprawled and distributed in honeycombs: even tv anchors perceive themselves as an elite (which the other elites do not know). Napoleon proposed himself as an elite, too, after violating the rules and the etiquette of the legitimate elite.
