  • Testing the Effect of Relative Pollen Productivity on the REVEALS Model : A Validated Reconstruction of Europe-Wide Holocene Vegetation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI. - 2073-445X. ; 12:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1 degrees x 1 degrees) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the 'Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites' (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity.

  • Earthquake Damage Scenario in Visp (Switzerland) : From Active Fault to Building Damage
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering 2012 (15WCEE). - : ETH Zürich.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a damage scenario based on multidisciplinary study which covers the key elements of the earthquakerisk chain in Visp. Full dynamic rupture simulations are performed using heterogeneous initial distributions, statistically compatible to the database of kinematic inversion results of past earthquakes. The fault is embeddedin the 3D velocity model of the area, which is based on an extensive ambient noise measurement campaign. Inorder to assess the risk in the city of Visp, the buildings were classified based on the screening survey of thebuilding stock. The seismic behavior of each class is described by the mean of fragility curves, partly developedby analytical, numerical and experimental investigations and partly based on existing methods

  • Quality of survival and cognitive performance in children treated for medulloblastoma in the PNET 4 randomized controlled trial
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology Practice. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2054-2577 .- 2054-2585. ; 4:3, s. 161-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The relationship between direct assessments of cognitive performance and questionnaires assessing quality of survival (QoS) is reported to be weak-to-nonexistent. Conversely, the associations between questionnaires evaluating distinct domains of QoS tend to be strong. This pattern remains understudied. Methods. In the HIT-SIOP PNET4 randomized controlled trial, cognitive assessments, including Full Scale, Verbal and Performance IQ, Working Memory, and Processing Speed, were undertaken in 137 survivors of standard-risk medulloblastoma from 4 European countries. QoS questionnaires, including self-reports and/or parent reports of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), the Health Utilities Index, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, were completed for 151 survivors. Correlations among direct cognitive assessments, QoS questionnaires, and clinical data were examined in participants with both assessments available (n = 86). Results. Correlations between direct measures of cognitive performance and QoS questionnaires were weak, except for moderate correlations between the BRIEF Metacognition Index (parent report) and working memory (r = .32) and between health status (self-report) and cognitive outcomes (r = .35-.44). Correlations among QoS questionnaires were moderate to strong both for parent and self-report (r = .39-.76). Principal Component Analysis demonstrated that questionnaires and cognitive assessments loaded on 2 separate factors. Conclusions. We hypothesize that the strong correlations among QoS questionnaires is partially attributable to the positive/negative polarity of all questions on the questionnaires, coupled with the relative absence of diseasespecific questions. These factors may be influenced by respondents' personality and emotional characteristics, unlike direct assessments of cognitive functioning, and should be taken into account in clinical trials.

  • Intel Stratix 10 FPGA design for track reconstruction for the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 18:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fast reconstruction of charged particle tracks with high efficiency and track quality is an essential part of the online data selection for the ATLAS experiment at the High Luminosity LHC. Dedicated custom designed hardware boards and software simulations have been developed to assess the feasibility of a Hardware Tracking Trigger (HTT) system. The Pattern Recognition Mezzanine (PRM), as part of the HTT system, has been designed to recognize track candidates in silicon detectors with Associative Memory ASICs and to select and reconstruct tracks using linearized algorithms implemented in an Intel Stratix 10 MX FPGA. The highly parallelized FPGA design makes extensive use of the integrated High-Bandwidth-Memory.In this paper, the FPGA design for the PRM board is presented. Its functionalities have been verified in both simulations and hardware tests on an Intel Stratix 10 MX development kit.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th International Beam Instrumentation Conference, IBIC 2017. - 9783954501922 ; , s. 8-15
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source, now under construction in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the world's most powerful pulsed neutron scattering facility. Driving the neutron source is a 5 MW superconducting proton linear accelerator operating at 4 percent beam duty factor and 14 Hz repetition rate. Nineteen partner institutions from across Europe are working with the Accelerator Division in Lund to design and construct the accelerator. The suite of accelerator instrumentation consists of over 20 unique system types developed by over 20 partners and collaborators. Although the organizational complexity presents challenges, it also provides the vast capabilities required to achieve the technical goals. At this time, the beam instrumentation team is in transition, completing the design phase while scaling up to the deployment phase. Commissioning of the ion source has commenced in Catania, preparations for installation on the Lund site are ramping up, and basic R&D on target instrumentation continues. Beam commissioning results from the systems immediately following the ion source will be presented, along with technical highlights and status of the many remaining instrumentation systems.

  • TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma are overexpressed in the bone marrow of Fanconi anemia patients and TNF-alpha suppresses erythropoiesis in vitro
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 102:6, s. 2053-2059
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Fanconi anemia (FA) C mice tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) have key roles in the pathogenesis of bone marrow failure. In FA subjects TNF-alpha was found to be increased in the serum and overproduced by patient-derived B-cell lines. In acquired aplastic anemia, a disease in which, similarly to FA, marrow failure occurs, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma act as late mediators of the stem cell damage and are overexpressed in patient marrow lymphocytes. This study evaluated in marrow mononuclear cells (MNCs) of patients with FA, the expression of negative modulators of the hematopoiesis, such as TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, macrophage inflammatory protein 1alpha (MIP-1alpha), and surface Fas ligand, and the role of TNF-alpha on FA erythropoiesis in vitro. TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma were significantly overexpressed in stimulated marrow MNCs of FA patients as compared to healthy controls. MIP-1alpha and Fas ligand were undetectable in patients and controls. In bone marrow cultures, the addition of anti-TNF-alpha increased the size and significantly increased the number of erythroid colony-forming units and erythroid burst-forming units grown from FA patients but not from healthy controls. This indicates that FA subjects have a marrow TNF-alpha activity that inhibits erythropoiesis in vitro. TNF-alpha has a relevant role in the pathogenesis of erythroid failure in FA patients.
