  • The geography of starts-ups in Sweden : The role of human capital, social capital and agglomeration
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Routledge. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 31:9-10, s. 735-754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In academia as well as in policy circles, entrepreneurial activities are placed at the focal point for regional development. However, geographical factors such as urbanization and peripherality are often neglected in this strand of research despite the increasing need for place-specific policies. The aim of this paper is therefore to analyse how start-up rates vary across municipalities in Sweden 2002–2012 by focussing on spatial differences of human capital, social capital, entrepreneurial culture and industrial specialization. Our multilevel models show how the degree of rurality and peripherality, respectively, moderates the role of different regional resources. The paper concludes by suggesting the formulation of separate policies considering urban, rural and more peripheral regions.

  • Entrepreneurship in rural regions : The role of industry experience and home advantage for newly founded firms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Regional studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0034-3404 .- 1360-0591. ; 55:5, s. 936-950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to assess the importance of industry experience and home advantage of entrepreneurs for the competitiveness of new firms in rural regions. We assume that spinoffs founded by local entrepreneurs are generally the most competitive form of entry, and show the highest comparative advantage in rural and peripheral regions. We use matched employer-employee data for Sweden to test the effect of industry experience and home advantage on firm survival, and job growth of surviving firms during the period 2004-2012. Our results suggest that industry experience is more important than home advantage for firm survival, but that firms in core areas do benefit from home advantage. Regarding job growth, home advantage seems to be more important than industry experience but with varying significance over the regional hierarchy. After controlling for survival, the positive effect on job growth of being locally embedded seems to be confined to entrepreneurs in more peripheral regions.

  • A promised land? : First summary of the research program
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document lays out the background for the research program “A promised land? Drivers, challenges and opportunities related to the (green) industrialization of Northern Sweden,” (nr. M22-0029) awarded by the Swedish Riksbankens Jubileumsfond’s in 2022. The document summarizes work in progress and may therefore be updated and republished in different versions according to the requirements of the program. This interdisciplinary program aims to understand the economic, social, and political challenges and opportunities of the ongoing industrial transformation in northern Sweden. A key element of the program is to identify drivers, obstacles, and preconditions in a historical, present, and forward-looking process-perspective.

  • Entrepreneurship in rural Sweden : the role of weak ties, strong ties, and 'good enough' internet access
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Rural Enterprise Economy. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 9780367471873 - 9781032118017 - 9781003034001 ; , s. 178-192
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter assesses to what extent broadband internet access and social capital influence entrepreneurship in rural Sweden. The chapter combines a quantitative assessment of the relation between broadband access and the start-up rates of micro-enterprises in Swedish municipalities between 2007 and 2012 with a qualitative case study on Dutch lifestyle migrants. Our results show that broadband access is positively correlated with entrepreneurial efforts in rural Sweden compared to larger urban regions. Nevertheless, investments in broadband access may not be the optimal allocation of public resources. Instead, the results suggest that mixing various types of social embeddedness and technical connectivity on a satisfactory, but not necessarily high, level may allow entrepreneurs to take advantage of synergies and create resilient business strategies based on local resources.

  • The Geography of Entrepreneurship : regional and individual determinants of new firm formation in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While there is a rich and growing body of literature on both individual and regional determinants of entrepreneurship, the dominant perspective assumes that these factor play a similar role in different spatial contexts. The thesis investigates in the first place the link between firm formation and economic opportunities that might be conditional on the regional setting. That is, that do not necessarily provide universal outcomes. Investigating that link might be of particular significance for the formation and performance of new firms in peripheral and stagnating regions. Such regions may benefit the most from tailored-made and research-guided policies. To address this goal, three quantitative studies were conducted based on data from Swedish registers and other sources provided by Statistics Sweden. Each study aimed to answer key questions regarding firm formation and regional development: (1) can regional unemployment trigger a new wave of business formation, (2) how can regional characteristics compensate for a relative absence of agglomeration externalities, and (3) how may the region utilize the potential of people moving into a region (non-local entrepreneurs) to foster entrepreneurship? The results suggest that while entrepreneurial activities indeed might absorb some redundant employees during times of less favorable labour market conditions, entrepreneurial policies cannot be considered a universal and anticyclical driver of economic growth. Instead, the more acute the labour market conditions are, the lower the quality of an average start-up becomes. According to the results, human capital, social capital and entrepreneurial culture are important for the variation in start-up rates across municipalities in Sweden. Human capital and entrepreneurial culture might enhance start-up activities in a similar way in different regional contexts. Social capital, in contrast, might exert effects of different magnitude depending on other regional characteristics and can moderate the scarcity of local resources. Finally, the results show that benefits stemming from access to local networks, information or locally recognizable credibility can be diminished when more diversity is introduced into the regional economy.Overall, the results suggest that regional disadvantages might be offset at least to some degree by other types of regional assets. These findings calls for more flexibility in our thinking about entrepreneurship agendas as a part of regional development that do not need to deal with all regional challenges, but instead focus on some regional advantages and how they can compensate for a lack of resources that are abundant in other regions.
