Energy structure and fluorescence of Eu2+ in ZnS:Eu nanoparticles

- Eu2+-doped ZnS nanoparticles with an average size of around 3 nm were prepared, and an emission band around 530 nm was observed. By heating in air at 150 degrees C, this emission decreased, while the typical sharp line emission of Eu3+ increased. This suggests that the emission around 530 nm is from intraion transition of Eu2+: In bulk ZnS:Eu2+, no intraion transition of Eu2+ was observed because the excited states of Eu2+ are degenerate with the continuum of the ZnS conduction band. We show that the band gap in ZnS:Eu2+ nanoparticles opens up due to quantum confinement, such that the conduction band of ZnS is higher than the first excited state of Eu2+, thus enabling the intraion transition of Eu2+ to occur.

- Nanocrystals of indium phosphide, with diameters of around 10nm, have been produced via an aerosol route. The method is based on the formation of monodisperse indium droplets and the subsequent reaction with phosphine at elevated temperature. The size of the final InP nanocrystal is self-limited by the size of the introduced size-selected In droplet. This size can be tuned carefully, thus this method allows a narrow size distribution of the nanocrystals. The kinetics of the reaction of In to produce InP depends on the temperature and the phosphine flow. Extensive high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies lead to a consistent picture of the process. Our approach opens the possibility for efficient production of size-selected semiconductor nanocrystals and it will allow new types of self-assembly and control of quantum dots.

- In this paper we present a fabrication route to produce size-selected III-V semiconductor nanocrystals via a simple, reliable, and efficient aerosol route. Since this approach includes the reaction of aerosol particles and a self-organized growth of a new compound, all in the aerosol phase, we call this process aerotaxy. Size-selected nanocrystals of different III-V compounds in a diameter range below 20 nm were fabricated using this method. Through the reaction of arsine with gallium droplets or of phosphine with indium droplets, GaAs and InP clusters were formed. Our approach opens the possibility to produce contamination-free and size-selected nanocrystals of compound semiconductor materials with considerable freedom in composition and size.

Gold nanoparticles : Production, reshaping, and thermal charging

- Gold nanoparticles are of great interest for various nanoelectronic applications, e.g., for making single electron transistors or very fine leads to molecular size entities. For this and other applications, it is important that all particles have controllable size and shape. In this paper, we describe the production of size-selected gold aerosol particles in the 20 nm range made by evaporation in a high-temperature tube furnace and subsequent size selection. To obtain spherical particles, it was necessary to reshape the particles at high temperature, which was investigated for temperatures between 25°C and 1200°C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the degree of crystallinity became higher for higher reshaping temperature. During reshaping at high temperature, an anomalous charging behavior was discovered, whereby negatively as well as positively charged particles became multiply negatively charged. Possible mechanisms for explaining this thermally activated phenomenon are discussed.

- This dissertation studies early seventeenth century local government, both the secular and religious, in order to investigate that period’s concepts of ”the good society”, and the strategies that were used to achieve and retain this ideal. The goal of the investigation is to give a broader understanding of early modern society at the local level. Order and balance appear to have been the overriding goal for the local institutions in Linköping. Justice and well-being were not a question of individual rights, but rather were found in corporative associations in which differences together created a hierarchical harmony and order. People who stood outside these were threatened by marginalization. For those who were “on the inside” resources were available. In the town were found material resources such as wells and gristmills, the community of the parish and the rådsturätt. Local authorities do not express any concept of development or a utopia of change. It did not seek to redistribute material resources or systematize support for specific vulnerable groups. A fundamental welfare strategy was to fit people into households within which they could support themselves. In the same way the religious punishments, can be seen as an important welfare strategy. To recreate order was also a way of appeasing God. If God liked what he saw, then perhaps he would rest his hand over the congregation. In summary it can thus be said that the local government tried to formulate the conditions for welfare by creating the premises for two important spheres—the home and the parish.

A Post-Analysis of the Introduction of the EU Directive 92/57/EEC in the Swedish Construction Industry

- The EU directive 92/57/EEC focuses on ensuring that health and safety-related matters are taken into consideration during every stage of construction-related work and has been introduced into the regulations of the member countries. In 2006, Sweden was tasked by the European Commission to clarify its implementation of the directive, including which management roles and responsibilities were to come into effect during both the planning and eventual execution of construction work—changes that ultimately were introduced into the national regulations in 2009. Focusing on the accident trends in the construction industry in the years immediately following these regulatory changes, we find that the new management roles and responsibilities had no apparent effect on the accident rates. Furthermore, we argue that there is a need to broaden the analysis regarding the implementation of the EU directive 92/57/EEC to also include nation-specific changes to health and safety management and policy. These qualitative studies should also include a dedicated focus on how changes to management structures and processes may affect the prevalence of occupational diseases specifically.

- The purpose of this study is to anazlye accidents occurring in the Swedish construction industry focusing specifically on the situation in the individual trades. The article includes all occupational accidents with at least one day of absence from work that were reported to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency for the year of 2016. The results, focusing on accident cause, injured body parts, as well as accidents per weekday, month and age, show that although the trades share commonalities regarding occupational accidents a number of trade-specific problem areas stand out. With this in mind, conclusions are drawn regarding the situation in each respective trade and suggestions are made for future studies focusing on accidents in construction industry trades.

Improving InAs nanotree growth with composition-controlled Au-In nanoparticles

- Au nanoparticles are commonly used as seeds for epitaxial growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires. However, the interaction between Au and In-containing III-V materials makes it difficult to control the growth of more complex nanowire structures in materials such as InAs. Here we report the growth of InAs nanowires and branched nanotrees using Au and Au-In nanoparticles. We show that the initial composition of the particle does not affect the morphology of the first-generation nanowires, nor does it affect the final composition of the particle after growth. However, when the Au-In particles were used to seed a second generation of nanowires, producing nanotrees, the branches exhibited a 2-3 times higher growth rate and more regular shape than those seeded by pure Au particles. This result is attributed to the decreased interaction between the seed particle and the trunk nanowires when Au-In particles are used. Thus the incorporation of In into the seed particle during particle production allows for modification of the particle-wire interaction.
