  • Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array for probing cosmology and fundamental physics with gamma-ray propagation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1475-7516. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of gamma-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of gamma-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z = 2 and to constrain or detect gamma-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from gamma-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of gamma-ray cosmology.

  • Prospects for Cherenkov Telescope Array Observations of the Young Supernova Remnant RX J1713.7-3946
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 840:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform simulations for future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations of RX J1713.7-3946, a young supernova remnant (SNR) and one of the brightest sources ever discovered in very high energy (VHE) gamma rays. Special attention is paid to exploring possible spatial (anti) correlations of gamma rays with emission at other wavelengths, in particular X-rays and CO/H I emission. We present a series of simulated images of RX J1713.7-3946 for CTA based on a set of observationally motivated models for the gamma-ray emission. In these models, VHE gamma rays produced by high-energy electrons are assumed to trace the nonthermal X-ray emission observed by XMM-Newton, whereas those originating from relativistic protons delineate the local gas distributions. The local atomic and molecular gas distributions are deduced by the NANTEN team from CO and H I observations. Our primary goal is to show how one can distinguish the emission mechanism(s) of the gamma rays (i.e., hadronic versus leptonic, or a mixture of the two) through information provided by their spatial distribution, spectra, and time variation. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of CTA to achieve various proposed scientific goals by observing this important cosmic particle accelerator.

  • Changes in p14(ARF) do not play a primary role in human chondrosarcoma tissues.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: International journal of cancer. Journal international du cancer. - 0020-7136. ; 93:5, s. 703-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The locus encoding the tumor suppressor p16 has been found to code for a second, different protein. This protein, p14(ARF), has been shown to protect p53 from degradation. Like p16, its gene is often altered in different cancers. In this study, the first unique exon, exon 1 beta, of p14(ARF), has been studied in 22 chondrosarcoma tissues using polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing and methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. One chondrosarcoma was found to have exon 1 beta homozygously deleted, but neither mutations nor methylations were found in any of the chondrosarcomas. This indicates that genetic changes of p14(ARF) are a rare event in chondrosarcoma.

  • Changes of the p16 gene but not the p53 gene in human chondrosarcoma tissues.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International journal of cancer. Journal international du cancer. - 0020-7136. ; 85:6, s. 782-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of two important tumour suppressor genes, p16 and p53, was evaluated in cartilaginous tumour tissues. Genomic DNA from 22 chondrosarcomas, 5 benign chondroid tumours, 1 sample of reactive proliferative cartilage and 2 samples of normal cartilage were analysed using polymerase chain reaction, single strand conformational polymorphism, DNA sequencing and methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. The p16 gene was found to be partly methylated in 5 high-grade chondrosarcomas and homozygously deleted in 1 chondrosarcoma. Moreover, a polymorphism was detected in 3 malignant tumours, but not in benign tumours or normal cartilage. Analysis of the p53 gene revealed an unchanged structure in all samples. These findings show a role for p16, but not p53, in chondrosarcoma.

  • Chemiluminescent fingerprints from airborne particulate matter: A luminol-based assay for the characterization of oxidative potential with kinetical implications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-9697. ; 789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a new chemiluminescent method based on the dependence of luminol light emission induced by free radicals in airborne particulate matter (PM) is proposed as a screening assay for the rapid characterization of samples from different sources based on their redox properties. This parameter is considered critical for assessing particulate matter toxicity and its impacts on human health. We propose a cell-free, luminescent assay to evaluate the redox potential of particulate matter directly on the filters employed to collect it. A joint chemometric approach based on Principal Component Analysis and Hotelling Analysis was applied to quickly sort out ambient particulate samples with a significantly different light emission profile caused by Luminol reaction. Based on Spearman correlation analysis, the association of the samples light emission intensity with their chemical composition and emission sources was attempted. The overall methodology was tested with certified reference materials and applied to two series of particulate matter samples previously subjected to thorough chemical speciation and subsequent source apportionment. The results show the effectiveness of the luminescent method, allowing the quick assessment of particulate matter oxidative potential, but providing further evidence on the complexity of the oxidative potential determination in this kind of samples. The chemometric processing of the whole dataset clearly highlights the distinct behavior among the two series of samples, the certificate standard reference materials, and the blank controls, supporting the suitability of the approach. • Reduced self-heating by strained silicon substrate engineering
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 254:19, s. 6182-6185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substrate engineering innovations such as SOI and the use of Si/SiGe virtual substrates become necessary in order to maintain performance leverage of integrated circuits with continued scaling. The relevance of thermal effects in device design increases since the thermal conductivity of these new materials is poor. The electrical performance of devices fabricated on thin virtual substrates grown by two different techniques is presented. It is found that self-heating is reduced and that thermal resistance measurements agree with modelling predictions. The reduction in performance enhancement seen in many strained Si MOSFETs is found here to be largely due to self-heating effects, rather than parasitics or the loss of strain.
