  • The genome of the model beetle and pest Tribolium castaneum.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 1476-4687. ; 452:7190, s. 949-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tribolium castaneum is a representative of earth’s most numerous eukaryotic order, a powerful model organism for the study of generalized insect development, and also an important pest of stored agricultural products. We describe its genome sequence here. This omnivorous beetle has evolved an ability to interact with a diverse chemical environment as evidenced by large expansions in odorant and gustatory receptors, as well as p450 and other detoxification enzymes. Developmental patterns in Tribolium are more representative of other arthropods than those found in Drosophila, a fact represented in gene content and function. For one, Tribolium has retained more ancestral genes involved in cell-cell communication than Drosophila, and some are expressed in the growth zone crucial for axial elongation in short germ development. Systemic RNAi in T. castaneum appears to use mechanisms distinct from those found in C. elegans, but nevertheless offers similar power for the elucidation of gene function and identification of targets for selective insect control.

  • Validating Test Cases for Safety Relevant ECUs using Simulation Models
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 4th International Symposium on Future Active Safety Technology towards Zero-Traffic-Accidents (FAST-zero).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software Components responsible for active safety require extensive testing using multiple steps from unit level to integration level. As the hardware involved in this process is costly and limited, it is important that test cases used in this environment are valid. In this study, we present a novel approach towards validating test cases for active safety software components in vehicles. Simulation models from the integration testing step are re-used for validating test cases early in the process. The approach builds upon the SimTAny framework that conducts a test-driven agile simulation. However, simulation models are available in their Matlab/Simulink simulation environment. Thus a distributed simulation of the test and the system model is required. Accordingly, an extended framework for distributed simulation is created using the high- level architecture / run-time infrastructure standard. We validate the approach by applying it to a test for reversible belt tensioning and the respective simulation model. We were able to reuse an existing simulation model and validate connected test cases. We show that the framework has the potential to save valuable time on expensive hardware resources and time to review test results.

  • The complex aerodynamic footprint of desert locusts revealed by large-volume tomographic particle image velocimetry.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Royal Society Interface. - : The Royal Society. - 1742-5662 .- 1742-5689. ; 12:108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Particle image velocimetry has been the preferred experimental technique with which to study the aerodynamics of animal flight for over a decade. In that time, hardware has become more accessible and the software has progressed from the acquisition of planes through the flow field to the reconstruction of small volumetric measurements. Until now, it has not been possible to capture large volumes that incorporate the full wavelength of the aerodynamic track left behind during a complete wingbeat cycle. Here, we use a unique apparatus to acquire the first instantaneous wake volume of a flying animal's entire wingbeat. We confirm the presence of wake deformation behind desert locusts and quantify the effect of that deformation on estimates of aerodynamic force and the efficiency of lift generation. We present previously undescribed vortex wake phenomena, including entrainment around the wing-tip vortices of a set of secondary vortices borne of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the shear layer behind the flapping wings.
