  • Collecting dialect data and making use of them an interim report from Swedia 2000
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings FONETIK 2000. ; , s. 17-20
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper consists of two, somewhat disparate parts. In the first part, some experiences of two years of fieldwork are summarized, concentrating, as the subtitle suggests, on the very heart of phonetic fieldwork: the encounters and interviews with the informants. As a result of the fieldwork, the project now has access to recordings from approximately 1300 speakers of more than 100 dialects of Swedish. We are currently initiating research on various aspects of the sound patterns of these dialects. The second part of the paper is meant to give an overview of some of our research plans for the near future.

  • Gothenburg Swedish word accents - a fine distinction
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Fonetik 2004 : proceedings. - 9172659017 ; , s. 28-31
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a previous investigation (Segerup, 2003) the word accent manifestations in a number of West Swedish dialects and Gothenburg Swedish were examined. Contrary to the generally accepted picture of the word accent distinction the results showed no clear and systematic distinction between the word accents with respect to the timing and shape of the pitch contours. The present paper focuses on the pitch contours of the word accents in Gothenburg Swedish. The acoustic analysis shows that in focal position both accents involve a fall in the first (stressed) vowel and a peak late in the second syllable. The word accent distinction is carried by relatively small differences in the timing and/or the height of this fall. It will be suggested that the timing and height of the pitch contours in the stressed vowel enter into a ‘trading relation’ perceptually.

  • Segmental duration - an essential feature of the West Swedish dialect
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the VIIIth Conference Nordic Prosody 2000. - 3631384912 ; , s. 199-212
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study is about the phonetic properties of the West Swedish dialect spoken specifically in the city of Gothenburg, i.e. göteborgska. On the basis of a perception test using synthetic speech the present investigation concerns the distribution of segmental duration within stressed and post-stressed syllables in the task of identifying the West Swedish dialect. In this study I will use the terms göteborgska, West Swedish and the West Swedish dialect interchangeably.
