  • Exploring the manufacturing reshoring decision-making process using system dynamics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SPS2022. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781643682686 - 9781643682693 ; , s. 380-391
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reshoring manufacturing is a strategic decision because of its cost, implications, and complexity. Existing models have largely focused on cost aspects in reshoring decisions and are considered limited in assisting practitioners in the reshoring decision-making process. Variables like cost and quality have been the most important, whereas environment and sustainability seem not a priority, arguing for the myopic nature of these decisions. Therefore, this study employs system dynamics (SD) to expand practitioners’ mental models for the reshoring decision-making process. To do so, first, variables and heuristics are retrieved from the literature. Next, an industry expert is interviewed to have a practitioner’s input. Finally, a descriptive SD model is built by connecting variables and heuristics. The findings indicate that the behavior of the variables in reshoring decisions is dynamic over time. Furthermore, the variables are inter-linked, resulting in non-linear, multi-caused reshoring decisions. The presented SD model allows incorporating the variables that are sometimes difficult to quantify and provides a holistic view of the variables, their relationships, complexities, and the dynamics involved in the reshoring decision-making process. This study contributes to reshoring literature by using SD perspective in the reshoring decision-making process and proposing an SD model for reshoring decision-making. This study assists practitioners in expanding their mental models regarding the reshoring decision-making process. It is further argued that the proposed SD model may work as a generic steppingstone to further develop company-specific feedback-oriented models to support in their reshoring decision-making processes and to support future research on the topic.

  • Fuzzy-logic-based support tools for initial screening of manufacturing reshoring decisions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 121:5, s. 965-992
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This paper investigates the suitability of fuzzy-logic-based support tools for initial screening of manufacturing reshoring decisions.Design/methodology/approach: Two fuzzy-logic-based support tools are developed together with experts from a Swedish manufacturing firm. The first uses a complete rule base and the second a reduced rule base. Sixteen inference settings are used in both of the support tools.Findings: The findings show that fuzzy-logic-based support tools are suitable for initial screening of manufacturing reshoring decisions. The developed support tools are capable of suggesting whether a reshoring decision should be further evaluated or not, based on six primary competitiveness criteria. In contrast to existing literature this research shows that it does not matter whether a complete or reduced rule base is used when it comes to accuracy. The developed support tools perform similarly with no statistically significant differences. However, since the interpretability is much higher when a reduced rule base is used and it require fewer resources to develop, the second tool is more preferable for initial screening purposes.Research limitations/implications: The developed support tools are implemented at a primary-criteria level and to make them more applicable, they should also include the sub-criteria level. The support tools should also be expanded to not only consider competitiveness criteria, but also other criteria related to availability of resources and strategic orientation of the firm. This requires further research with regard to multi-stage architecture and automatic generation of fuzzy rules in the manufacturing reshoring domain.Practical implications: The support tools help managers to invest their scarce time on the most promising reshoring projects and to make timely and resilient decisions by taking a holistic perspective on competitiveness. Practitioners are advised to choose the type of support tool based on the available data.Originality/value: There is a general lack of decision support tools in the manufacturing reshoring domain. This paper addresses the gap by developing fuzzy-logic-based support tools for initial screening of manufacturing reshoring decisions.

  • Fuzzy logic in a reshoring decision-making context
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Operations and Supply Chain Management, Vietnam, 2019, OSCM, 2019. - OSCM.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the feasibility of using fuzzy logic for reshoring decision-making. To achieve this a fuzzy logic system for reshoring decision-making was implemented. The system was configured in two different ways to cover the two main fuzzy logic modeling approaches and sixteen fuzzy inference settings were used in each configuration. The research shows that fuzzy logic is a feasible method for reshoring decision-making. The reduced rule base configuration was more accurate than the complete rule base configuration. However, the reduced rule base also generated more conflicts in particular settings. Among all the fuzzy inference settings used in this research, one of the settings outperformed the others. With regard to the particular inference methods, the research show that maximum is the preferred aggregation method while middle of maximum is the preferred defuzzification method.

  • Three novel fuzzy logic concepts applied to reshoring decision-making
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Expert systems with applications. - : Elsevier. - 0957-4174 .- 1873-6793. ; 126, s. 133-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the possibility of increasing the interpretability of fuzzy rules and reducing the complexity when designing fuzzy rules. To achieve this, three novel fuzzy logic concepts (i.e., relative linguistic labels, high-level rules and linguistic variable weights) were conceived and implemented in a fuzzy logic system for reshoring decision-making. The introduced concepts increase the interpretability of fuzzy rules and reduce the complexity when designing fuzzy rules while still providing accurate results.

  • A comprehensive literature review of green supply chain management
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2nd World Congress on Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering (CSEE’17). - : Avestia Publishing. - 9781927877296 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a competitive market, organizations expand their supply chain on a global scale. Pressure from customers, stakeholders, legislation and environmental organizations have pushed companies to be more considerate of the environmental impacts of their supply chain. This development has put focus on sustainability within supply chains, leading to the rise of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM). The purpose of this research is to create a conceptual model to present the vastly varied literature within the area of GSCM in a structured way, in order to promote environmental and in turn, overall supply chain performance. The research methodology includes a literature review using 125 peer-reviewed journal articles from 2013 to 2016 published in 19 journals. Out of the 125, 10 journalarticles were selected based on their focus in regard to the subject. The articles were chosen to attain a vantage point in view of critical factors within environmentally sustainable supply chains with a focus on optimizing performance. This paper contributes to theory by presenting a conceptual model for optimizing performance in green supply chains. Drivers, which promote Green Supply Chain (GSC) are classified as re-active and pro-active, and the main methods used for optimizing performance are concluded to be collaboration, metrics to monitor performance and practices such as green purchasing, ecodesign, reverse logistics and legislation. The review may be of use to both academics and companies as it outlines proven ways to implement green supply chain with high performance.

  • Local and organic food distribution systems: towards a future agenda
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Operations and Supply Chain Management. - : OSCM Forum. - 1979-3561 .- 2579-9363. ; 13:4, s. 336-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing consumer demand for local and organic food as they are considered to be more sustainable, ecological and healthier. The ‘conventional’ long food distribution system is not sufficient to fulfill the current needs. Consequently, short distribution systems for local and organic food have been gaining popularity, that is not only sustainable but also contributes to food security and satisfies local consumer demand. One such short distribution systems are alternative food networks (AFNs). The AFNs have emerged as a promising provisioning system for local and organic food that promotes economical, environmental and social sustainability and respect for farming tradition. However, the AFNs are facing challenges in increasing the distribution of local and organic food in the long term. The purpose of the paper is to make a review of the existing short food distribution systems for local and organic food and propose a research agenda. In order to achieve this, a literature review is conducted and different food distribution channels within AFNs are studied. The challenges for each food distribution channel are identified and then compared to ‘conventional’ distribution systems. The main finding of the study is a framework of main challenges of short food distribution channels within AFNs. The practical implication is generic criteria to consider while designing a short food distribution system that closely connects consumers and farmers of local and organic food. The policy implication is to create favorable conditions to encourage short food distribution systems in the long term.

  • Local Distribution of Organic Food : A Review and Research Agenda
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Operations and Supply Chain Management, Vietnam, 2019. - OSCM.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing consumer demand for local and organic food as they are considered to be more sustainable, ecological and healthier. The ‘conventional’ long food distribution system is not able to fulfill the current needs. Consequently, short distribution systems for local and organic food have been gaining popularity that is not only sustainable but also contribute to food security and satisfies local consumer demand. Alternative food networks (AFNs) address these concerns. They have emerged as a food provisioning system linked with reciprocal ties that promote a sustainable and civil economy, environment, biodiversity and respect for farming tradition. However, the AFNs are facing a challenge to maximize the distribution of local and organic products in the long term. As a main finding of the study is presented a framework with the main challenges of the existing short food distribution channels within AFNs. This gives the general criteria to consider while designing a short food distribution system that closely connects consumers and farmers of local and organic food. The policy implication is to create favorable conditions to encourage short food distribution systems in the long term.

  • Strategies for sustainable alternative food networks in uncertain times
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 9th International EurOMA Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Forum. - Zagreb : University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business. - 9789533461762 ; , s. 233-242
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The traditional food supply chains are vulnerable to external shocks, and this has been observable during the pandemic. Alternative food networks (AFNs) is seen as a potentially viable alternative to traditional food supply chains. AFNs encompass practices related to local food supply, involve few actors and promote sustainability. The purpose of this research is to identify strategies for sustainable AFNs, that enable growth and resilience during uncertain times. To achieve the purpose, the SCORE (Strengths, Challenges, Opportunities, Responses, Effectiveness) method is investigated. The main findings include an up-to-date overview of the strengths, challenges, opportunities, responses and effectiveness of AFNs in uncertain environments.
