- The exploration of the unique properties of stored and cooled beams of highly-charged ions as provided by heavy-ion storage rings has opened novel and fascinating research opportunities in the realm of atomic and nuclear physics research. Since the late 1980s, pioneering work has been performed at the CRYRING at Stockholm (Abrahamsson et al. 1993) and at the Test Storage Ring (TSR) at Heidelberg (Baumann et al. 1988). For the heaviest ions in the highest charge-states, a real quantum jump was achieved in the early 1990s by the commissioning of the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt (Franzke 1987) where challenging experiments on the electron dynamics in the strong field regime as well as nuclear physics studies on exotic nuclei and at the borderline to atomic physics were performed. Meanwhile also at Lanzhou a heavy-ion storage ring has been taken in operation, exploiting the unique research opportunities in particular for medium-heavy ions and exotic nuclei (Xia et al. 2002).

- We show numerically that vector antenna arrays can generate radio beams that exhibit spin and orbital angular momentum characteristics similar to those of helical Laguerre-Gauss laser beams in paraxial optics. For low frequencies (1 GHz), digital techniques can be used to coherently measure the instantaneous, local field vectors and to manipulate them in software. This enables new types of experiments that go beyond what is possible in optics. It allows information-rich radio astronomy and paves the way for novel wireless communication concepts.

- Fruit and vegetable processors, faced with the challenge of gaining and maintaining a healthy position in the competitive fruit and vegetable sector, are optimising traditional processes towards product quality. Using frozen potatoes as a case study, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of improving the texture of potatoes by modifying the processing conditions. The texture of processed frozen potatoes is the result of the integral effect of the unit operations applied through the production chain. Production of frozen potatoes includes a blanching, a freezing, thawing/cooking step before being served. In this study, blanching temperatures from 70 to 97 °C up to 10 minutes were tested and combined with freezing by two freezing methods, impingement and air-blast freezing. The texture was measured after cooking of frozen potatoes in boiling water. Besides texture, water holding capacity, microstructural evaluation and pectinmethylesterase (PME) activity were determined. Blanching of potatoes prior to freezing can both improve water holding capacity and texture of potatoes, but this effect depends on the freezing rate and blanching temperature. Potatoes frozen with fastest freezing method are firmer and hold more water than the ones frozen by air-blast freezing. Blanching at 70 °C can lead to potatoes that after cooking retain a firmer texture, compared with blanching at 90 °C. The duration of the blanching treatment has also an important effect on texture changes. The studies of PME activity showed a good correlation between texture and PME for blanching at 90 °C, but for blanching at 70°C and longer times, the development of texture does not seem to be solely related to PME activity. Microstructural studies showed that the differences in texture are due to differences in the degree of starch gelatinisation and integrity of the cellular structure.

- Background Haematopoietic clones caused by somatic mutations with >= 2% variant allele frequency (VAF) increase with age and are linked to risk of haematological malignancies and cardiovascular disease. Recent observations suggest that smaller clones (VAF<2%) are also associated with adverse outcomes. Our aims were to determine the prevalence of clonal haematopoiesis driven by clones of variable sizes in individuals with obesity treated by usual care or bariatric surgery (a treatment that improves metabolic status), and to examine the expansion of clones in relation to age and metabolic dysregulation over up to 20 years.Methods Clonal haematopoiesis-driver mutations (CHDMs) were identified in blood samples from participants of the Swedish Obese Subjects intervention study. Using an ultrasensitive assay, we analysed single-timepoint samples from 1050 individuals treated by usual care and 841 individuals who had undergone bariatric surgery, and multiple-timepoint samples taken over 20 years from a subset (n = 40) of the individuals treated by usual care.Findings In this explorative study, prevalence of CHDMs was similar in the single-timepoint usual care and bariatric surgery groups (20.6% and 22.5%, respectively, P = 0.330), with VAF ranging from 0.01% to 31.15%. Clone sizes increased with age in individuals with obesity, but not in those who underwent bariatric surgery. In the multiple-timepoint analysis, VAF increased by on average 7% (range -4% to 24%) per year and rate of clone growth was negatively associated with HDL-cholesterol (R = -0.68, 1.74 E-04).Interpretation Low HDL-C was associated with growth of haematopoietic clones in individuals with obesity treated by usual care.

- Measurements in man of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) have demonstrated a number of cortical and subcortical events coupled to sensory stimulation or motor performance. It has also been shown that local activity changes take place in the cortex during 'pure' mental activity such as motor imagery (unaccompanied by sensory input or motor output). Thus, our group has previously shown that imagination of hand movements gives predominantly a frontal cortical rCBF activation while the corresponding hand movement activates the rolandic hand area mainly. In this paper we report tomographic rCBF measurements with a 133-Xenon SPECT technique during imagined tennis movements and silent counting. Both procedures gave rise to a significant cerebellar activation in addition to cortical rCBF changes. Apparently, the cerebellum may participate in pure mental activity. It possibly plays a role for the temporal organization of neuronal events related to cognition.

Sjukdomsbilden var associerad med en – för första gången beskriven – punktmutation, C332A, i exon 4 i glycerolkinasgenen.

- When renovating existing multi-family buildings it is very important to implement the best retrofit strategy possible in order to minimize the remaining life-cycle cost for the building. If the building is heated with district heating this strategy of course changes due to the energy rate used by the utility. It is also very important for the utility that the consumer is encouraged to save energy when there is a need for it, i.e. during peak load conditions. Our paper shows that an accurate cost differential rate provides all these facilities.
