  • The Effect of Bituminous and Lignite Ash on the Performance of Ilmenite as Oxygen Carrier in Chemical‐Looping Combustion
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering and Technology. - : Wiley. - 0930-7516 .- 1521-4125. ; 36:9, s. 1460-1468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of ash in chemical-looping combustion (CLC) has been studied in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor. The oxygen carrier, ilmenite, was investigated with German lignite coal, Chinese bituminous coal, Mexican pet coke, wood char, and methane. Lignite ash and ash from gasified Chinese bituminous coal were compared in this study. Up to 50 wt % and 33.3 wt % loadings of ash from the combustion of lignite and ash from the gasification of coal were added. The gas conversion was clearly affected by the addition of ash, and very similar results were seen both for methane conversion and for CO conversion in the solid fuel tests. Thus, both ashes showed initial decrease in gas conversion with the addition of some ash due to the presence of inert/deactivating material in the ashes. At higher ash loading, a beneficial effect of ash could be seen. Furthermore, no negative effect of ash addition on the fluidizability of the bed material could be seen.

  • The influence of particle size and structure in hydrated lime on the properties of the lime putty and lime mortar
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of architectural heritage. - Philadelphia : Taylor & Francis. - 1558-3058 .- 1558-3066. ; 4:2, s. 86-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of lime slaked in different ways and analysis of thin section of lime putty and mortar specimens by light microscopy was combined with practical tests and field studies to evaluate the impact of the slaking technique on the properties of the lime putty as well as the structure of the fresh and carbonated mortar. The lime slaking methods studied were wet slaking and earth slaking, giving lime putties with very different consistency and workability. The aim of this work was to use microscopy techniques to explain these differences in properties and to investigate if it is possible to use these analytical methods to recognize the lime-slaking technique used in a historical lime mortar. The results obtained by SEM show significant differences in structure between the lime putties. The earth-slaked lime consists of relatively large particles that are packed in a porous system compared with the wet-slaked lime with very small particles closely packed in a dense structure. After storing, the wet-slaked lime gives a putty that has a dense and clearly defined stratified structure, whereas the earth-slaked lime is porous and has no stratification.

  • X-ray fluorescence tomography of individual municipal solid waste and biomass fly ash particles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. ; 76:6, s. 1586-1595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information about Cd distribution inside single municipal solid waste and biomass fly ash particles is fundamental since it affects its leachability. The internal 2D distributions of the main and trace elements in such highly inhomogeneous matrixes were successfully determined by means of the combined synchrotron radiation induced micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-SRXRF) and tomography (mu-SRXRFT) techniques. Scanning mu-SRXRF measurements show Cd elemental distribution within single fly ash particles to be inhomogeneous, but no information can be obtained about its internal distribution. During mu-SRXRFT analysis, single fly ash particles are successively measured by a rotational-translational scan in a VH = 2 x 5 mum(2) microbeam. The 2D internal elemental distribution images, obtained by the modified simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique algorithm, provide the size and the location of Cd-containing areas together with the location of other measurable elements. Results showed Cd concentration to be higher in the core of the fly ash particles analyzed rather than on the surface of the particles. Moreover, in both ashes, Ca-containing matrixes are found to be the main Cd-bearing phases. A possible mechanism for Cd adsorption on the fly ash particles is proposed based on the obtained results.

  • Determination of the cd-bearing phases in municipal solid waste and Biomass single fly ash particles using SR-mu XRF Spectroscopy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 79:17, s. 6496-6506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using an excitation energy of 27.0 keV, synchrotron radiation-induced micro-X-ray fluorescence (SR-mu XRF) is employed to extract information regarding the composition and distribution of Cd-bearing phases in municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass fly ashes. Significance of observation is based on statistics of totally more than 100 individual MSW and biomass fly ash particles from a fluidized bed combustion (FBC) plant. Cd concentrations in the parts-per-million range are determined. In general, although previous leaching studies have indicated Cd to be predominant in the smaller-size ash particles, in the present study Cd is more evenly distributed throughout all the particle sizes. For MSW fly ashes, results indicate the presence of Cd mainly as CdBr2 hot-spots, whereas for biomass fly ashes, which exhibit lower CdX2 concentration, a thin Cd layer on/in the particles is reported. For both ashes, Ca-containing matrixes are found to be the main Cd-bearing phases. Support for this observation is found from independent first-principles periodic density functional theory calculations. The observations are condensed into a schematic mechanism for Cd adsorption on the fly ash particles.

  • Countermeasures against alkali-related problems during combustion of biomass in a circulating fluidized bed boiler
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Science. ; 63, s. 5314-5329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work was to study different ways to mitigate alkali-related problems during combustionof biomass in circulating fluidized beds. Wood chips and wood pellets were fired together withstraw pellets, while the tendency to agglomerate and form deposits was monitored. In addition to areference case, a number of countermeasures were applied in related tests. Those were addition of elementalsulphur, ammonium sulphate and kaolin to a bed of silica sand, as well as use of olivine sand andblast-furnace slag as alternative bed materials. The agglomeration temperature, composition and structureof bed-ash samples were examined. The flue-gas composition, including gaseous alkali chlorides, wasmeasured in the hot flue gases and in the stack. Particles in the flue gas were collected and analysed forsize distribution and composition. Deposits were collected on a probe in hot flue gases and their amountand composition were analysed. Addition of kaolin was found to be the best method to counteract theagglomeration problem. The deposition problem is effectively counteracted with addition of ammoniumsulphate, while kaolin is too expensive to be used commercially against deposits, and sulphur is lesseffective than ammonium sulphate.
