  • Salafi Sufism? : Islamic Border-Keeping in COntemporary Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Approaching Religion. - : Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History. - 1799-3121. ; 12:2, s. 77-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to analyse a local expression of the transnational Ahbash Sufi movement in light of recent scholarship on the relationship between Salafism and Sufism as well as Islamic neo-traditionalism. Some researchers have reacted against a dichotomous relationship between fundamentalism and Sufism, instead suggesting a continuum and a mutual interdependence. We aim to contribute to a developed understanding of the process whereby some Sufi actors go on the attack against their Islamic foes by publicly and loudly claiming to represent ‘true Islam’ as found in the ‘fundamentals’ of Islam – but with a different understanding of what those fundamentals are. We analyse a series of interviews with a local representative of the transnational Ahbash Sufi movement in Malmö, Sweden; the Ahbash movement has its central leadership in Lebanon. Through discussing the representative’s understanding of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bidʿa, in particular concerning the celebration of the prophet Muhammad’s birthday (mawlid al-nabi), we note a combined emphasis on authoritative textual sources – including the Qurʾan and hadith literature – and the allegedly unbroken traditional knowledge transmission which secures a correct understanding of Islam. This shows an ambiguous space of Islamic thought and practice, an arguably Salafi-affected neo-traditionalist defense of Sufism, which transgresses commonly employed dichotomies between Salafism and Sufism.

  • Islamophobia in Sweden: Muslim Advocacy and Hate-Crime Statistics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Fear of Muslims? International Perspectives on Islamophobia, edited by Douglas Pratt & Rachel Woodlock. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319296968 ; , s. 153-166
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Like elsewhere in Europe, Sweden suffers from under-reporting and methodological problems when it comes to recording, countering and defining Islamophobic and other hate-crimes that target religious groups. Statistics on the self-reported targeting of Islamophobic hate-crimes indicate much higher numbers than those reported to the police. This chapter provides an accessible overview to the existing data on Islamophobia in Sweden, contrasting official data with how Muslims in Sweden perceive their situation. The official data come from annual reports on hate-crimes and National Safety Surveys collected by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå) from 2006 to 2012. To include Muslim perceptions we have primarily used the Swedish Muslims in Cooperation Network Alternative Report (SMCNAR). The latter provides information on how many Muslims perceive Islamophobia, inequalities and discrimination in contemporary Sweden. This chapter finds that it is necessary to pay close attention to the problem of how to define and measure Islamophobia in explaining the differences between the sources of data. While the official records seem to indicate that Islamophobia is a relatively minor problem, the SMCNAR paints a different picture. No matter how we analyse existing records, the fact that there is a gap between how minorities perceive the level of hate-crimes and how this problem is shown in the official records constitutes a problem. Without better correspondence between official records and the perceptions of a minority, the ability of government bodies to tackle the problem of hate-crimes in society becomes seriously limited.

  • A translocal Sufi movement: Developments among Naqshbandi-Haqqani in London
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Sufism Today: Heritage and Tradition in the Global Community. - 184511762X
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The developments and activities among the attendees to a Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi priory in north London in recent years have come to raise a number of issues regarding Sufism in Western Europe. The relationship between shaykh and murid, "disciple", has been developed into a complex interaction where ongoing negotiations concerning the content and form of the tariqa’s activities continuously take place. At the same time, political initiatives referring to "Sufi ideology" are becoming a key aspect of the tariqa’s activity, along with public events where spiritual experiences are performed in a popularised manner. This article strives to describe and analyse these recent developments in light of the concepts "translocality" and "movement".

  • Lovers of Muhammad : A Study of Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufis in the Twenty-First Century
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis aims to contribute, both empirically and theoretically, to the field of study within Islamology that concerns contemporary Sufism in non-Muslim majority societies. It does so by investigating how activities and narratives provide meaning and identity for participants in the transnational Sufi movement Naqshbandi-Haqqani. This movement is led by the Turkish Cypriot Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani (b. 1922) and is well-known for its capacity to attract followers from very diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The shaykh has established groups of disciples in various parts of the world since the early 1970s, particularly in London where he regularly used to spend lengthy periods of time until the late 1990s. Mainly based on fieldworks between 2004 and 2009 in London and Northern Cyprus, this thesis presents ethnographic material from settings where disciples of the mentioned Shaykh Nazim interact with each other, engage in communal rituals, and integrate his interpretation and articulation of Sufi Islam in their lives. Activities in a centre connected to the movement in North London, visits to the shaykh’s home in Northern Cyprus, and the impact of his US-based deputy Shaykh Hisham Kabbani is discussed. A separate chapter is devoted to the communications of the two leading shaykhs, including book publications, Internet presence, and public relations. Another chapter deals with the effort led by Shaykh Hisham Kabbani to establish a common structure for Sufi Muslims in Britain in the aftermath of the terror attacks in London in July 2005, named the Sufi Muslim Council (SMC). The framing of a common Sufi identity around the theme of being ‘lovers of Muhammad’, which was prominent at public events arranged by the SMC, is discussed. In sum, a perspective for the study of contemporary Sufism is advocated that focuses on activities and narratives of socially situated Sufis, relating these in turn to competing conceptualisations of Islamic tradition, to transnational flows of people and information, and to the politics of belonging and identity on both individual and collective levels. This perspective strives to acknowledge the complexity and malleability of contemporary Sufism as a lived experience.
