  • Large Scale Additive Manufacturing of Recycled Polymer Composites
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the American Society for Composites - 38th Technical Conference, ASC 2023. - : DEStech Publications. ; , s. 2405-2411
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of large-scale products is currently undergoing a considerable shift in the manufacturing sector in favor of additive manufacturing (AM). Complex structures and elaborate designs that were previously impossible to produce using conventional manufacturing techniques are now possible thanks to the usage of additive printing technology. At the same time, using recycled materials in the production process has also risen to the top of the industry's priority list as a result of a growing focus on sustainability. In this context, the use of recycled polymer composites in large-scale additive manufacturing (LSAM) is beginning to attract attention from both industry and research. Indeed, recycled polymer composites offer several benefits, including not only lower costs but also significantly reduced environmental impact and improved mechanical properties compared to virgin polymer materials. However, several challenges are still associated with using recycled materials in AM, including issues with material properties and compatibility with the AM process. Perhaps the most difficult polymer for AM is nylon where different grades pose different printing properties and challenges, thus printing large-scale objects in recycled nylon is a challenge that few have taken on. One objective of our project is to improve the properties of recycled polymers for LSAM by investigating how different additives, such as mineral wastes and/or recycled short fibers, influence the LSAM process and the properties of the resulting printed object. One way to achieve this objective is by simulating the AM process where we use ABAQUS AM capabilities that enable us to optimize the process and material parameters. Thermal and mechanical analyses using the element activation technique in ABAQUS AM allow us to implement multi-scale multi-physical models for material and process simulation and ensure that the final product meets the desired mechanical and structural properties. To truly reach a circular economy, a systems-level transformation of manufacturing must be achieved [1]. Our vision is to digitally transform manufacturing by turning recycled polymers and other industrial wastes into secondary raw materials and composites for LSAM of final products. However, further research on different industrial use cases and applications is needed to address the remaining challenges associated with this approach and to fully realize its potential in the manufacturing industry.

  • The Substitution of Labor: From technological feasibility to other factors influencing job automation
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is the fifth report from the three-year project, The Innovative Internet, which is funded by the Internet Foundation in Sweden (IIS - Internetstiftelsen i Sverige) and for which we are very grateful. In this project our primary objective is to examine how the Internet and digitalization have influenced entrepreneurship and innovation in Sweden. This report focuses on how technology and the Internet can impact the dynamics of the labor markets with a particular focus on Sweden.

  • The substitution of labor: From technological feasibility to other factors influencing the potential of job automation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Digital Transformation of Labor (Open Access): Automation, the Gig Economy and Welfare. - London : Routledge. - 9780429317866 - 9780367330705 ; , s. 31-73
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Artificial intelligence, machine learning (a subcategory of AI), and robotics are three technologies that perform an increasingly wider variety of routine and even non-routine job tasks. This chapter provides an overview of digitalization and automation along with the three underlying technologies and explores the potential of these technologies to replace human capabilities in the workplace. Subsequently, it discusses a set of factors beyond technological feasibility that influence the pace and scope of job automation. Some of the chapter’s key findings include the following: (1) The majority of jobs will be affected by the automation of individual activities, but only a few have the potential to be completely substituted; (2) the automation potential for non-routine tasks seems to remain limited, especially for tasks involving autonomous mobility, creativity, problem-solving and complex communication; (3) the nature of jobs will change as mundane tasks will be substituted and people will work more closely together with machines; and (4) industries that have a large potential for labor substitution are food and accommodation services, transportation and warehousing, retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturing.

  • A Bad Apple Went Away: Exploring Resilience among Bitcoin Entrepreneurs
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The emerging digital cryptocurrency Bitcoin has made waves in mainstream media  across the globe, as have the numerous extreme events that have rocked it. One such event,  the bankruptcy of a prominent Bitcoin exchange called Mt. Gox, particularly shocked the  emerging sociotechnical field. However, it is not clear how the numerous entrepreneurial  firms operating in this field survived this shock.

  • Backers’ crowdfunding journey – An engagement perspective
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdfunding refers to accumulating small sums of money from the general public through the Internet for a collective larger amount to fund small or medium-sized ventures in exchange for some benefit. The contribution can be as a donation (for no material reward), a purchase (for getting a reward in return), debt (to get money returned), or equity (for sharing future profit). The three main actors in crowdfunding are the initiators (the venturers), the backers (the crowd members who fund), and the crowdfunding platforms (the intermediaries). The crowdfunding campaign’s survival and success depends on engagement from the crowd. Using a qualitative research method, this dissertation aimed to understand the backers’ engagement with four crowdfunding campaigns selected from the leading crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter, through processual analysis. Buildingon the integrative framework of service-dominant logic, engagement, and customer journey, the underlying mechanism of the backers’ engagement at the personal (micro) and interpersonal (meso) levels were explored. Based on the motivation and contribution pattern, the backers were segmented into four engagement roles: benefactors, patrons, shoppers, and utilisers. A deeper analysis showed how the engagement intensity, duration, valence, and engagement properties shaped over time across these roles. The insights from the findings in the dissertation carry managerial and policy implications.

  • Knowledge dissemination in global R&D operations : an empirical study of multinationals in the high-technology electronics industry
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0938-8249. ; 40:1, s. 49-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is an empirical examination of I) the mechanisms that three multinationals used to disseminate knowledge within their globally dispersed R&D operations, 2) the impediments that these multinationals experienced when implementing these mechanisms, and 3) the means to overcome these impediments. Management focused considerably on implementing mechanisms that facilitated the flow of knowledge to top management for the coordination of globally dispersed R&D activities. However, little attention was placed on mechanisms to facilitate the flow of knowledge for use by engineers in problem-solving activities. Three types of impediments to knowledge flow were observed: I) opportunity cost of time, 2) knowledge is power, and 3) not-invented-here. Knowledge flow in an MNC appears to be facilitated by establishing a one-company culture through I) incorporating teamwork as a company value, 2) evaluating individual knowledge contribution and assimilation in performance appraisals, 3) implementing a goal that promotes overall company improvement, and 4) facilitating extensive personnel rotation.
