  • Bootstrapping Language Description : The case of Mpiemo (Bantu A, Central African Republic)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th edition of the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC 2008), 28-30 may 2008, Marrakech, Morocco.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linguists have long been producing grammatical decriptions of yet undescribed languages. This is a time-consuming process, which has already adapted to improved technology for recording and storage. We present here a novel application of NLP techniques to bootstrap analysis of collected data and speed-up manual selection work. To be more precise, we argue that unsupervised induction of morphology and part-of-speech analysis from raw text data is mature enough to produce useful results. Experiments with Latent Semantic Analysis were less fruitful. We exemplify this on Mpiemo, a so-far essentially undescribed Bantu language of the Central African Republic, for which raw text data was available.

  • Acoustic properties of implosives in Bantu Mpiemo
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 73-76
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies on implosives have shown a great diversity in the production of implosives among the languages in the world. In the light of this, this paper seeks to identify the acoustic phonetic properties of a Bantu language, Mpiemo, spoken in the Central African Republic. One of the strong acoustic correlates of implosives is increasing voicing amplitude during occlusion, which contrasts with a decreasing voicing amplitude for voiced plosives. Another acoustic property of implosives is the increased F0 during the occlusion, which continues all the way to the end of the following vowel.

  • North-South Contributions to African Languages
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a collection of papers that were written by a particular group of authors for a special purpose. On the one hand, this purpose was the demonstration of the academic potential and expertise found in the Nordic countries and Northwest Russia. On the other hand, contributions were made by colleagues residing in African countries and working there at tertiary institutions. In the latter case these colleagues were or still are foremost partners in cooperation projects that are implemented by scholars both from Nordic and African institutions. The point of departure for this publication was the initiative of University of Gothenburg Africanists who demonstrated their unanimous support of the African Union's Year of African Languages 2007/8 by convening the international symposium "Nordic Contributions to African Language". The publication gives an overview of Nordic and African research as well as commitment to the cause of African languages in teaching and empowement.
