  • Identifying the Electronic Character and Role of the Mn States in the Valence Band of (Ga,Mn)As
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 111:9, s. 097201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, for both low (1%) and high (13%) Mn doping values, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature-dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As.

  • Analysis of surface-bulk screening competition in the electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 cuprate using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report core level and valence band photoemission results obtained for Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x = 0.15) single crystals and films by using both soft and hard x rays, hence, with tunable depth sensitivity. When using hard x rays only, we observe distinct and energy separated structures in the main 2p(5)3d(9)L peak of Cu 2p(3/2) and 2p(1/2) core levels, including the well screened features located at the high kinetic energy side, which were recently reported by Taguchi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 177002 (2005)]. By varying the photoelectron takeoff angle, we analyze the difference in the screening properties between surface and bulk, and we demonstrate the depth dependence of the electronic properties by following the evolution of the bulk-related peak. The possible influence of the surface conditions on the Cu 2p spectral features is also discussed.

  • Understanding Solid-Gas Reaction Mechanisms by Operando Soft X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy at Ambient Pressure
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 124:26, s. 14202-14212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambient-pressure operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (soft-XAS) was applied to study the reactivity of hydroxylated SnO(2 )nanoparticles toward reducing gases. H-2 was first used as a test case, showing that the gas phase and surface states can be simultaneously probed: Soft-XAS at the O K-edge gains sensitivity toward the gas phase, while at the Sn M-4,M-5-edges, tin surface states are explicitly probed. Results obtained by flowing hydrocarbons (CH4 and CH3CHCH2) unequivocally show that these gases react with surface hydroxyl groups to produce water without producing carbon oxides and release electrons that localize on Sn to eventually form SnO. The partially reduced SnO2-x layer at the surface of SnO2 is readily reoxidized to SnO2 by treating the sample with O-2 at mild temperatures (>200 degrees C), revealing the nature of "electron sponge" of tin oxide. The experiments, combined with DFT calculations, allowed devising of a mechanism for dissociative hydrocarbon adsorption on SnO2, involving direct reduction of Sn sites at the surface via cleavage of C-H bonds and the formation of methoxy- and/or methyl-tin species at the surface.
