- Vad innebär det i praktiken att skolans och förskolans verksamhet skall vila på vetenskaplig grund och beprövad erfarenhet? Det vi tycker är intressant att lyfta fram är på vilket sätt forskningen bedrivs, hur forskningsfrågorna kommer till och hur resultaten kommer den pedagogiska praktiken tillgodo. I denna artikel diskuterar och problematiserar vi relationen mellan den pedagogiska forskningen och förskolans och skolans verksamhet. Diskussionerna exemplifieras från ett konkret forsknings- och samverkansprojekt, där forskning och praktik har gått hand i hand. Vidare ger en forskare, en doktorand, en lärarutbildare, en skolledare och en lärare sin personliga syn på samverkan mellan pedagogisk forskning och praktik.

- Adherence by Helicobacter pylori increases the risk of gastric disease. Here, we report that more than 95% of strains that bind fucosylated blood group antigen bind A, B, and O antigens (generalists), whereas 60% of adherent South American Amerindian strains bind blood group O antigens best (specialists). This specialization coincides with the unique predominance of blood group O in these Amerindians. Strains differed about 1500-fold in binding affinities, and diversifying selection was evident in babA sequences. We propose that cycles of selection for increased and decreased bacterial adherence contribute to babA diversity and that these cycles have led to gradual replacement of generalist binding by specialist binding in blood group O-dominant human populations.

- In an era characterized by a move towards a “knowledge society”, universities are central in fostering “knowledgeability”, that is the reflexive understanding of knowledge in knowledge societies. The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum.The aim of this paper is to use international examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, implementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden.We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the act of evaluating the link between education and research will increase awareness of this linkage by stakeholders involved in both education and research. In turn the link can be strengthened, contributing to increased quality in both education and research.

- This short paper describes the first prototyping of a self-evaluation process of Curriculum Agility at a Faculty of Technology in Sweden. The process comprises guided, semi-structured, individual interviews at different organisational levels within the faculty, a joint narrative based on those interviews, prioritizing development strategies per level, and jointly mapping them on importance and implementation time. The self-evaluation is part of and based on the research on the principles of Curriculum Agility. The results show the interplay in timely curriculum change for futureproof engineering education between the teaching staff, the systems and the people who control the systems. The self-evaluation brings together the different perspectives and perceptions within the faculty and gives insight in how those affect the willingness towards and occurrence of curriculum development. This work in progress indicates how doing such a qualitative self-evaluation paves the road for transparent strategic dialogues on a holistic level about what to give attention and organize differently.

Structural features of glycosyltransferases synthesizing major bilayer and nonbilayer-prone membrane lipids in Acholeplasma laidlawii and Streptococcus pneumoniae

- In membranes of Acholeplasma laidlawii two consecutively acting glucosyltransferases, the (i) alpha-monoglucosyl-diacylglycerol. (MGlcDAG) synthase (aIMGS) (EC 2.4.1.157) and the (ii) alpha-diglucosyl-DAG (DGlcDAG) synthase (alDGS) (EC 2.4.1.208), are involved in maintaining (i) a certain anionic lipid surface charge density and (ii) constant nonbilayer/bilayer conditions (curvature packing stress), respectively. Cloning of the aIDGS gene revealed related uncharacterized sequence analogs especially in several Gram-positive pathogens, thermophiles and archaea, where the encoded enzyme function of a potential Streptococcus pneumoniae DGS gene (cpoA) was verified. A strong stimulation of aIDGS by phosphatidylglycerol (PG), cardiolipin, or nonbilayer-prone 1,3-DAG was observed, while only PG stimulated CpoA. Several secondary structure prediction and fold recognition methods were used together with SWISS-MODEL to build three-dimensional model structures for three MGS and two DGS lipid glycosyltransferases. Two Escherichia coli proteins with known structures were identified as the best templates, the membrane surface-associated two-domain glycosyltransferase MurG and the soluble GlcNAc epimerase. Differences in electrostatic surface potential between the different models and their individual domains suggest that electrostatic interactions play a role for the association to membranes. Further support for this was obtained when hybrids of the N- and C-domain, and full size alMGS with green fluorescent protein were localized to different regions of the E. coli inner membrane and cytoplasm in vivo. In conclusion, it is proposed that the varying abilities to bind, and sense lipid charge and curvature stress, are governed by typical differences in charge (pI values), amphiphilicity, and hydrophobicity for the N- and (catalytic) C-domains of these structurally similar membrane-associated enzymes.

- Vid Umeå universitet används sedan några år tillbaka ett regelverk i form av ett sammanhållet kvalitetssystem för utbildning som bygger på nio aktiviteter som stödjer, utvecklar och synliggör det systematiska kvalitetsarbetet. En av dessa aktiviteter är ”Utbildningsutvärdering genom kollegial extern granskning”, vars syfte är att bidra till att säkra kvaliteten i utbildningarnas innehåll och genomförande samt ge stöd för kvalitetsutveckling. Vi beskriver processen för utvärderingen av 11 ingenjörsutbildningar som genomförts under 2022 och diskuterar fördelar och nackdelar med det valda upplägget ur kvalitets- och resursperspektiv. Därefter diskuteras några programövergripande utvecklingsområden som de externa granskarna lyft fram, däribland jämställdhet, pedagogisk modell, samt professions- och forskningsanknytning. Avslutningsvis sammanfattar vi den återkoppling vi erhöll från både de externa granskarna och programansvariga som deltog i processen. Återkopplingen är av betydelse för att kontinuerligt förbättra vår process för kollegial extern granskning inför kommande utvärderingsomgångar.

- Students with type 1 diabetes (T1D) need to take responsibility for their T1D and need professional support from school nurses. This study describes school nurses’ experiences in supporting students with T1D in school. A qualitative approach was used. After purposive sampling, six school nurses were interviewed and data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. For professional support, a network around the student was enabled constituting of a continuous dialogue and responsibility and preparedness. For professional support a mutual commitment from the student, parents, and the school nurse was needed which was built from initiating participation and security, the school nurse’s ability to be present and available and on school nurse’s perceived competence. The conclusion of the study, and its practical implication, is that school nurses’ ability for professional support of students with T1D varied in relation to their perceived competence in nursing science as well as their ability to enable, strengthen and sustain teamwork and family–school team meetings.
