    • The heat of reaction of mercury diphenyl with hydrogen chloride in benzene solvent has been measured at 25°C. The heat of reaction of mercury diphenyl with mercuric chloride in methanol solvent has also been measured. From these heats of reaction, the heat of formation of mercury diphenyl has been derived: ΔHf° (Hgφ2, cryst.) = 65.4 ± 2 kcal/mole. Previous data on the heats of reaction of mercury diphenyl with bromine and iodine, and with mercuric bromide and mercuric iodide have been amended, and used to derive, independently, ΔHf° (Hgφ2, cryst.) = 67.2 ± 2.2, and 66.1 ± 3.2 kcal/mole. These values all agree, within their respective limits of error, with the heat of formation obtained by Fairbrother and Skinner from the heat of combustion of mercury diphenyl. The "best" value, ΔHf° (Hgφ2, cryst.) = 66 ± 2.5 kcal/mole, is proposed. The heat of formation of crystalline mercury phenyl chloride is -0.55 ± 2.3 kcal/mole.

    • Discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs) are frequently observed with insects, i.e. oxygen take up and carbon dioxide release occur interrupted by periods of a few minutes up to many hours. The paper presents direct and indirect calorimetric experiments on DGCs of the scarabid rhinoceros beetle Oryctes nasicornis. A direct/indirect calorimetric experiment is presented. Total and specific heat production rates amount to 0.56mWand 0.42mWg–1 in the first period without DGCs and to 0.43 mW (0.32 mW g–1 ) in the second phase, resp. The mean DGC amplitude is 0.184 mW and thus between 33 and 66% of the total turnover.

    • Using batch microcalorimeters of the thermopile conduction type, heat production was measured in human blood in the presence of defined antigens and their specific antibodies. A large increase in heat production, reflecting increased metabolic activity in the blood cells, was found when antigens and specific antisera at certain antigen-antibody proportions were mixed with the blood. The reproducibility and specificity of the method were found to be very good. The present results indicate that calorimetry may be a useful technique for detection of antigen-antibody complexes.
